Making Alabama, A Bicentennial Traveling Exhibit
is a statewide celebration of 200 years of statehood presented by Alabama Humanities Foundation in partnership with Alabama Department of Archives and History and Alabama Bicentennial Commission.
"The Bicentennial Traveling Exhibit allows us an opportunity to showcase not only Sumter County, but the Black Belt region and its significance to our state's story," said Black Belt Museum Director James Lamb.
The University of West Alabama's Division of Economic and Workforce Development's Black Belt Museum will host the exhibit Sept. 13-Oct. 18. The Museum is located in downtown Livingston on the Sumter County Courthouse Square.
There is no charge for this exhibit. Hours for the exhibit will be announced soon.

WIOA Career Pathways for Youth Program launches Automotive Technician Program

The University of West Alabama's Division of Economic and Workforce Development welcomed two new cohorts to the WIOA Career Pathways for Youth Program in August.
The program expanded this year from a single-track program, to a dual track program offering options in Certified Nursing Assistant training and automotive technician training.
"We are excited and have gotten off to a great start," said Curtis Jones, WIOA Automotive Instructor at UWA's Division of Economic and Workforce Development. "This course will enhance students' knowledge of the automotive industry, provide hands-on training in automotive repair, and assist students seeking employment at automotive repair facilities. Our plans are to grow the program in order to meet the demand for trained automotive technicians in West Alabama."
The addition of the automotive track was approved for funding and builds on the existing CNA program that was funded for a fourth year. These classes assist low-skilled, out-of-school youth ages 16 to 24 that are unemployed or underemployed, and prepare them for entry-level employment as nursing assistants and automotive technicians. The program will serve 60 youth in Greene, Marengo, Sumter, and surrounding counties over the next year.
The WIOA Career Pathways program is made possible through funding available to the State of Alabama from the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). The grantor is the U.S. Department of Labor and the program is administered by the Alabama Department of Commerce, Workforce Development Division, AWDA Section.

Leadership Sumter holds graduation on UWA campus

Leadership Sumter graduated its third class on Thursday, Aug. 29. The graduation ceremony was also a kick-off for the 2019-2020 class.
In remarks to the new class, graduate Dr. Aliquippa Allen said, "You are in for an amazing year. This program will help you see our community in a new way."
Allison Brantley, UWA Economic Development Director added that graduates should get ready to roll up their sleeves, put on their boots and get a little dirty as they dig in and look at all things Sumter.
Alums of the program congratulated the 2018-19 class and shared program plans with the 2019-20 class. The purpose of the Leadership Sumter Program is to identify, educate and train potential and current leaders in Sumter County; to develop these leaders through an effective network and interchange of ideas; and to gain a better understanding of our economic, political and social conditions.
According to Tina Jones, Vice President of the Division of Economic and Workforce Development, "Leadership Sumter is a special opportunity for participants to enhance their leadership skills and help the citizens of our community achieve shared goals through community and personal development."
Leadership Sumter allows communities within Sumter County to meet a requirement within the Alabama Communities of Excellence (ACE), a statewide program that provides professional, technical, and development resources and expertise to small cities with a population between 2,000 and 18,000. The City of Livingston received its ACE Designation in 2012 and has recently been re-certified.
