The Gratitude Corner
Many thanks for everyone's contributions of time and talent made to enrich St. Brendan's ministries this week: for Dan and Bunny Reardon who hosted our coffee hour last Sunday an for all who helped with set up and clean up, for Elisabeth who did the flowers on Sunday, for our Worship and Music Ministry who plan such rich Worship services for us, and for Meg and Jo's efforts to get the lovely railings up on the stairs to the altar.
Submitted online by Lis, our Senior Warden: I never take for granted the time, energy and spirit of all those who selflessly volunteer and contribute their talents that enable our parish to survive....and yes flourish!! This strong faith and commitment of so many makes me very appreciative and grateful to be a part of this supportive and spirited community.
The Gratitude Corner is a new feature in our newsletter where we can express our appreciation and gratitude for all the efforts made by each of us to make St. Brendan's a better place.

Education and Spiritual Development
The Rev. Dr. Richard Mallory, Associate Rector at Grace St Paul's Episcopal Church in Tucson, AZ will be spending the month of September on Deer Isle. Patricia Donahue and Anne Cushman are members of Grace St Paul's. Bill Scaife and Susan Wade have generously offered their home to Fr. Richard and his wife Pam till 9/9 and then they will stay at Patricia Donahue's guest house for the rest of the month.
Fr Richard will preside at our liturgy on 9/15, and 9/29. The service will be followed by Sermon Talk Backs.
There will be three Old Testament study/discussion groups focused on the Jacob saga and the Joseph story on Mondays September 1st, 9th, and 16th from 10:00a.m. to 11:30a.m.

LIBRARY AT ST. BRENDAN'S OPEN
Have you been looking for a book on spirituality, theology, biblical studies, or simply religious studies in general? Or perhaps thinking ahead to longer evenings and more reading time you want to explore new books. With over 600 books catalogued and shelved, St. Brendan's Library is the perfect place to visit, browse and take out a book. The process is simple, and the library committee welcomes your ideas and suggestions as we look to improve and expand.
In the weeks ahead look for book reviews and other library-sponsored activities in your e-newsletter. Ideas: what about an on-going book club meeting at the library, author presentations and discussions, or contributing reviews and critques of your favorite books? When regular visitor times are determined, the local community will be invited to an open house and to join in our library activities as library patrons.
St. Brendan's has been blessed to have several members of our congregation authors in the field of religious studies. You will find books by these authors in our library. St. Brendan's Library stands as a tribute to their contributions.

Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost:
The gospel reading today is another of the passages from Jesus' teaching as he approached Jerusalem and his death. For weeks now, we have been reminded of the call to discipleship and its cost. Today's reading describes his call to bear the cross, setting aside all earthly concerns which would turn us away from faithfulness to Christ.
The first reading is from Moses' concluding instructions to the people of Israel before his death. He reminds them again of the commandments and calls on them to choose between obedience and life on the one hand, and disobedience and death on the other.
In Paul's brief letter to his friend, Philemon, he describes the transformed quality of Christian people's relationships with others. Philemon's runaway slave, Onesimus, has become a Christian and Paul instructs Philemon to receive him back as a brother in Christ. The work of Christ's Spirit in our lives places us in a new stance in which we are all brothers and sisters, and children of the living God.
Each gathering to celebrate the Holy Eucharist challenges us to renewed commitment to the new life that God gives us. We find ourselves part of a family given us in baptism. In company with our brothers and sisters, we respond by choosing life rather than death, and in union with our Savior, we take up our cross and join in pilgrimage toward the resurrection.

of bullying in our schools and workplaces.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice, may we be found in their ranks.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country, remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, Graham, and Caleb.
We pray
for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Thomas, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
