Dear Friend of CCSD93,
CCSD93's Schools Honor Veterans
Monday is Veterans Day, a time when we honor the brave men and women who have served our country in the United States Armed Forces.

Today, Roy DeShane School students held a Veterans Day assembly to celebrate the holiday and the end of the first trimester. Students rotated through stations where they heard veterans speak about their experiences, worked collaboratively on a patriotic poster, and learned and sang patriotic songs. It was a terrific event for the students as you can see!

On Monday, Carol Stream and Western Trails will host Veterans Day assemblies, and Heritage Lakes will welcome veterans for a school breakfast. Look for more information on our social media channels regarding these events on Monday.

On behalf of CCSD93, I extend my deepest gratitude to all of the veterans in our school community. It is because of your service and sacrifice that we are all able to enjoy the freedoms afforded to us.

Please be sure to read the following articles to keep up with the latest from CCSD93. Have an excellent weekend.

Sincerely,
David H. Hill, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
Western Trails Students Travel the Globe During Cultural Connections Day
This week, students from Western Trails participated in Cultural Connection Day during their CATS time. As they moved from activity to activity, they traveled across continents, creating music influenced by African nations, designing Mehndi body art originally from India, and playing the Ancient Mayan game of Pok Ta Pok from Central America. Find out more about the terrific experience here!
Student Report Cards Distributed Today
Student first trimester report cards were sent home today with elementary school students and mailed to parents of middle school students. Please keep an eye out for them and connect with your child's teacher if you have any questions!

Current students in grades 4-8 who attended CCSD93 schools during 2018-19 will also receive their Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) results from last spring, and current 6th graders will receive their Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) results. Letters explaining those results will be included.
CCSD93 Parents Invited to Free Parent Workshops!
Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) is an ongoing series of free workshops and presentations geared toward helping adults navigate parenthood in modern times. They're terrific resources for our community, and even though it has Glenbard in its name, CCSD93 parents with or without students in high school absolutely are invited to attend.
Check out the GPS programming scheduled throughout the next few weeks that you may find valuable. For even more on these programs, visit www.glenbardgps.org.
Farewell, Dr. Elsie Johnson
CCSD93 is saddened to share that we lost a pioneer of the CCSD93 family last week, as Dr. Elsie Violet Carson Johnson passed away on Saturday, November 2 at the age of 97.

Dr. Johnson became CCSD93's first full-time Superintendent of Schools in 1959, a role in which she served until June 30, 1982. Prior to that, she taught multiple grades at the old Cloverdale School, located at the site of CCSD93's current Early Childhood Center, and served as the school's principal. Our Elsie C. Johnson Elementary School, which opened in the fall of 1982, is named for her.

Dr. Johnson was a committed educator with a strong sense of the learning needs of students.

The following quote, taken from a newspaper profile of her circa 1968, rings as true today as it was more than 50 years ago when she spoke it: "What children need today more than teaching aids, such as audio-visual equipment, is a close relationship with the teacher. Children must be made to feel 'at home' in the classroom. Only then can they learn."

CCSD93 continues to strive to make students feel at home while in the classroom and remains forever impacted by her legacy within our community. Our hearts go out to Dr. Johnson's family and loved ones at this time.
