My fellow members,

Well here we go again!! It's an early start to another great year for the UPCDA.   It is with great honor to serve as your President this year and the entire board is looking forward to having a wonderful year ahead.   Our mission this year is to recruit new members, and to reignite interest in existing members that don't participate. We have an exciting schedule this year. Please check it out and mark your calendars so you don't forget to attend. There are a couple of social events prior to the regular schedule aimed at inviting new dentists, if you know anyone interested please invite them. I remember when I was one of the newbies and it was nice to be made part of our group. Now, I am one of the oldies and although still excited to be a part, it would be great to have new ones to carry the flame.

The West Coast meeting in Marco was excellent. The hotel was awesome, meeting and continuing ed courses were very enlightening. President Oscar Menendez, put on a heck of a social event in his Presidential suite. The meeting made me realize the importance of organized dentistry, not only for the fellowship, but to make sure we have a voice in government. I encourage everyone to go next year.

Our upcoming year will include some great continuing education. We have secured an Opioid lecture for the November dual meeting. This will satisfy the requirement put forth by the state of Florida. We are also having a throwback meeting in October, like what we used to do years ago.   The UPCDA is entering a float in the Dunedin Mardi Gras Parade next March. It will be a lot of fun and great exposure for our group, so plan on it. We want to have a balance of education and fun for our members. I think the dues are a bargain for all the activities we have planned.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meetings. Have a great rest of the summer!!

Tim Doerner, DDS
President

A step-by-step process will be presented in a series of checklists that the attending dentist can immediately apply to help solve problems with their patients.

Learning objectives;
  • Review key principles and concepts of esthetics and function.
  • Apply the four treatment options to solve functional issues.
  • Utilize the Functional-esthetic 2-D checklist.
  • Show the use of the 10 Step 3-D checklist.
  • Apply these checklist and principles to a number of different cases.

Florida's New Law on Controlled Substance Prescribing

All licensed dentists who are registered with the DEA and authorized to prescribe, including Teaching Permit holders, Health Access dentists, Temporary Certificate holders, Limited License holders and Dental Residents are impacted by the changes in the Controlled Substances Bill and must complete a mandatory seminar by January 31st. UPCDA will be providing the seminar to its members on Wednesday, November 8th. You can also complete the seminar online, click here for online seminar.

There are four key changes in the law for all dentists. They include:

A requirement that dentists take a Board-approved 2-hour CE course on prescribing controlled substances
  • Prescription supply limits for the treatment of acute pain that may not exceed 3 days or up to a 7 day supply in special circumstances
  • The Florida Board of Dentistry develop guidelines for prescribing controlled substances for acute pain
  • Mandatory requirement for all dentists to utilize the PDMP for the prescribing or dispensing of controlled substances.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DENTAL THERAPISTS

This past legislative session, the Florida Dental Association (FDA) was successful in defeating legislation that would have allowed a high school graduate with three years of dental therapy training extract permanent teeth, perform partial root canals and administer local anesthesia under the general supervision of a dentist.

How has the FDA prepared for the dental therapist threat to Florida?

The FDA understands the importance of an informed Legislature. This year's goal was to help legislators understand the significance of the education and training dentists go through before they are licensed to practice dentistry. The groundwork of educating legislators is essential to helping them understand the difference between a dentist and the proposed legislation for dental therapists. The FDA's "The Root of ..." campaign specifically outlined the number of years dentists attend dental school, in addition to any specialty training for specialists, before they are licensed to practice dentistry in Florida. Click here for "The Root of ..." flyer on education and training.
