Wilmette Internship Program a 'Win-Win'

From watering newly planted trees to surveying the condition of street pavement to gathering data on our water and sewer system, interns are providing tremendous value to the Village of Wilmette - and our residents.

The Village of Wilmette is committed to promoting efficiency and enhancing productivity in its delivery of municipal services. The internship program is a 'win-win' in that Wilmette can cost-effectively boost its workforce and services with support from interns, meanwhile college students can get hands on experience and training.

This year, Wilmette has six interns in various departments providing a wide range of services and a valued return on investment. For example, the two interns in the Public Works Department have been gathering and verifying the positional accuracy of the water and sewer system assets. The goal was to gather data for 25% of the Village and they've exceeded expectations covering 100% of the Village. This data collection creates a detailed inventory, which improves overall operational efficiency and maintenance efforts. Wilmette's Forestry Intern has been updating the Village's tree inventory, which provides the Village with the most current information to efficiently respond to requests and streamlines the pruning process. Another intern is working on surveying the pavement condition of Village streets totaling about 65 miles and that data will be entered in the Village's data management program to help determine the overall condition of our roads.
