CCS Staff In the Know
As we begin the 5th week of remote learning we want to extend a HUGE thank you to all of our teachers, support staff, school administrators, and our families who have been working tirelessly to make these 9 weeks the best for our students!

We continue to witness the resiliency of our educators and students and you simply amaze us! When technology hasn't cooperated, our parents and staff have worked together to find a resolution. Our teachers have created after school office hours to accommodate families' schedules to help answer questions and concerns. Schools are hosting virtual back to school nights and Extra Support Nights to ensure families are engaged and have the resources and information they need.

Now more than ever it is important we stay connected and continue to help one another. If you need help, please do not hesitate to reach out to your department leader or your school administration. If they do not have the answer, they will definitely point you in the right direction or do the research to help find what you need.

THANK YOU AGAIN TO EVERYONE WHO IS WORKING THEIR HARDEST TO MAKE THIS THE BEST EXPERIENCE FOR OUR CHILDREN!

Mr. Tabari Wallace, West Craven High Principal, and 2018 NC Principal of the Year was invited to kick off the 2020 Carolina Panthers Season as the Keep Pounding Drummer.

The Keep Pounding ritual is a deeply rooted tradition in the Carolina Panthers organizationβ€”the team mantra. Sam Mills originally inspired this via a speech he made in the locker room in January of 2004. This speech revolved around commitment and never giving up. The Panthers have a Keep Pounding drum ceremony where an individual who embodies the character that Mills spoke of in his speech hits the drum 4 times following the coin toss. A reminder to our players to play the way Mills spoke of and to remind our fans of the power of their support.

Mr. Wallace was selected after a podcast where he was interviewed for was heard and his love and passion for education were truly inspiring. Today, Mr. Wallace pounds the drum for all educators and children in Craven County and across the state of North Carolina.

Clever Updates

Staff, please remind your students and families that accessing Clever through the Rapid Identity portal is giving users an error message. This has been reported to both Clever and Rapid Identity. While we are waiting for a resolution to this, a workaround is to go to the Clever app on the iPad or directly to clever.com, (select your school), and log in with your Google account (do not try to login with your NCEdCloud credentials).

Finance News

Craven County Schools will not be deferring the employee portion of the Social Security Tax as mentioned in President Trump's Executive Order issued on August 8, 2020. This order authorized employers to have the option to defer the withholding and deposit of the employee portion of the social security tax from September 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020 but those taxes would need to be repaid at a later date.
Based on feedback from surrounding districts as well as information received from the NC Office of the State Controller, who have opted not to adopt this payroll deferral and who have explained that the current state payroll systems cannot accommodate this law, we have made this decision in the best interest of our district.

Master of School Administration (MSA)                                Information Session

Is becoming a school leader among your professional goals? Are you passionate about being an educator? Do you have at least three years of teaching experience? If so, East Carolina University has an opportunity in which you may be interested.
ECU’s master of school administration (MSA) program in educational leadership is designed to prepare individuals to become school leaders. Program studies are aligned with the North Carolina School Executive (NCSE) standards and include strategic planning, problem solving, instructional leadership, managerial leadership, political analysis, organizational theory and development, and leadership skill application. The MSA encourages and supports students to serve as problem-solvers, communicators, innovators, collaborators, and change agents as they immerse themselves in service-learning experiences at their respective schools.
The program benefits include part-time study that is delivered hybrid face-to-face at an off-campus partner location (i.e.; school, district office, etc.) and online. This means ECU faculty come to you for classes. Craven County Schools is proud to partner with ECU to host this program in our district to make it easier for great teachers to become great leaders.
If interested, please plan to attend the information session as detailed below:
N.C. Science Leadership Association - Webinar Series

We are in a new era of education because of what is going on in the world around us. As a result, educators must contend with two critical issues of our time: effective pedagogies for virtual teaching and meaningful ways to provide equity and social justice in our classrooms.

To meet the needs these issues present to leaders in North Carolina, NCSLA is presenting four webinars this fall to provide professional learning opportunities on these topics. Two of the webinars will investigate the challenges inherent in distance learning and will present pedagogy to effectively meet those challenges. The other two webinars will take a hard look at ways in which equity and social justice can be addressed and incorporated into the classroom.

Join us virtually and hear from top Science Educators in North Carolina sharing the ways and means to remote learning in a virtual classroom and addressing diversity and equity during distance learning.

Please see the attached flyer for webinar dates and times:
