December 2021 Newsletter
Karen A. Wientjes, PT, DPT, MPH, CWS®
The end of the year can be such a busy time. I hope you find at least a moment or two of calm to ground yourself and take in the sights, sounds, and sensations of this special time of year.

I have just a quick reminder to renew your ABWM certification before the January 31st deadline. Please remember to log your 6 hours of CEUs when you renew. Check out the ABWM Foundation website if you need any last-minute continuing education credits. There are some great webinars available there.

This year, I have been all about improving connections. We have a new map feature on our website, Find a Specialist, to help patients and providers in your area find you. Once on the ABWM website, they can search by zip code, name, or specialty, for a wound specialist nearby. Let’s make it even easier for patients to get quality care by updating our Certemy profiles. This feature has also been extremely helpful in locating a certified specialist for a patient outside my geographic area. So, please be sure to update your work address, phone number and website in your Certemy profile, and let’s connect even more!

On behalf of the ABWM, we want to wish all of you a warm and merry holiday season and let you know our headquarters will be closed from December 24, 2021, through January 2, 2022. If you have a concern or query during this time, please email us at [email protected] and one of our team members will respond as soon as possible.

I will end by sharing one of my favorite quotes,

“The original meaning of the word ‘appreciate’ means to move toward what is precious. Practicing gratitude is a type of leaning in towards being truly present. It’s a practice that reengages our aliveness- that awakens us to what is precious. Gratitude is at the heart of reciprocity; it is the atom of relationship.” - Mark Nepo

I am grateful for this community and the work that we do. Have a wonderful holiday season, and best wishes for a happy, healthy New Year!

The Role of ABWM's Public Member
The ABWM Board of Directors' roster always includes one public member. According to the Institute of Credentialing Excellence (ICE), the role of a public member is to champion the public or consumer interest, bring new ideas and goals to the table, contribute an unbiased perspective, encourage consumer-oriented positions, and bring additional public accountability and responsiveness.

ABWM's public member is Russ Melchert (pictured above), a registered pharmacist based in Lee's Summit, MO. Russ recently addressed a letter to ABWM's Executive Director Chris Murphy, reviewing his experience as ABWM's public member, and outlining the importance of the role from his perspective. An except of this letter is below:

"As you know, public members are critical to the success of a board of directors, especially for such an important board as ABWM, which must set and maintain credential requirements, assess candidates’ knowledge and skills for certification, and move the credentials forward as the science progresses as well as engage certified providers to maintain and grow their knowledge and skills accordingly.

I can assure you as a public member, this is of the utmost importance as ABWM plays a critical role so that the public at large, my family, my friends, and possibly you or me can rest assured that should we need state-of-the-art care for our wound issues that a ABWM certified provider will be well prepared to help us."

You can read Dr. Melchert's full letter at the link below.
The American Board of Wound Management (ABWM) is initiating an important step in the CWCA®, CWS®, and CWSP® certification examinations development process, and we need your help.

As an active wound care professional, you’re invited to participate in the ABWM Job Task Analysis (JTA) Survey, which is the first and most important step in recommending updates to the CWCA®, CWS®, and CWSP® certification examinations. Participation by wound care professionals representing different regions, industries and specialties, practice settings, and years of experience is important to ensure that the survey results adequately represent the profession. The outcome of this survey will be an updated Detailed Content Outline (DCO) for the CWCA®, CWS®, and CWSP® examinations to certify future CWCA®, CWS®, and CWSP® candidates.

The invitation is being sent to wound care professionals. Please do not forward the email or survey link to other individuals. The survey will be available from December 7, 2021 – January 14, 2022. You can access the survey by clicking on the button below.

For completing the survey, you will be eligible to be entered in a raffle to win a $250 Giftogram gift card which can be used at over 200 retailers including Amazon, Apple, and Uber.

If you have questions about this survey, please contact the ABWM at [email protected].

Thank you for your participation!
