IRSScamSecurity Summit Warns of New IRS Impersonation Email Scam
IR-2019-145, August 22, 2019

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service and its Security Summit partners today warned taxpayers and tax professionals about a new IRS impersonation scam campaign spreading nationally on email. Remember: the IRS does not send unsolicited emails and never emails taxpayers about the status of refunds.

The IRS this week detected this new scam as taxpayers began notifying  phishing@irs.gov  about unsolicited emails from IRS imposters. The email subject line may vary, but recent examples use the phrase "Automatic Income Tax Reminder" or "Electronic Tax Return Reminder."

The emails have links that show an IRS.gov-like website with details pretending to be about the taxpayer's refund, electronic return or tax account. The emails contain a "temporary password" or "one-time password" to "access" the files to submit the refund. But when taxpayers try to access these, it turns out to be a malicious file.

"The IRS does not send emails about your tax refund or sensitive financial information," said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. "This latest scheme is yet another reminder that tax scams are a year-round business for thieves. We urge you to be on-guard at all times."

This new scam uses dozens of compromised websites and web addresses that pose as IRS.gov, making it a challenge to shut down. By infecting computers with malware, these imposters may gain control of the taxpayer's computer or secretly download software that tracks every keystroke, eventually giving them passwords to sensitive accounts, such as financial accounts.

The IRS, state tax agencies and the tax industry, which work together in the Security Summit effort, have made progress in their efforts to fight stolen identity refund fraud. But people remain vulnerable to scams by IRS imposters sending fake emails or harrassing phone calls.

The IRS doesn't initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information. This includes requests for PIN numbers, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts.

The IRS also doesn't call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes. See  Report Phishing and Online Scams  for more details.

ReduceStress10 Reasons Why a Simple Lifestyle Reduces Stress and Benefits Your Health
I remember the day we began to live simply. After spending half of the summer cruising with our daughter on a 29-foot sailboat, my husband and I were overwhelmed by the amount of clutter in our four bedroom house. We went through the house, room-by-room, questioning anything that had not been necessary while living on the boat. We filled our station wagon, making twice-daily trips to Goodwill for a week.

The end result was a lifestyle that was immediately calmer. We had more time to spend together, and we noticed that our daughter, who has autism, made marked improvements across the board. We were happy, our communication improved, and we began to talk about the next steps our life would take.

In our case, those next steps involved emptying our house completely, moving across the country, and living aboard a sailboat full time. We might be called "extreme minimalists," but it is possible to experience the benefits of a simpler lifestyle without having to take such drastic measures.

More and more studies are showing the benefits of taking small steps to simplify your life. A little less screen time, a few less toys, and a slight decrease in stimulation can reap great rewards.

Here are 10 ways in which a simpler lifestyle can benefit you, physically and emotionally:

FasterThanLightNew Planetarium Show: Faster Than Light

Astronomers are discovering more and more planets orbiting other stars. These planets now number in the thousands, but only a precious few of those might harbor conditions suitable for life. One such planet orbits the nearest star, Proxima Centauri, only 4.3 light-years away. What will it take to explore this planet? In a word: SPEED! Faster Than Light: The Dream of Interstellar Flight examines the need for speed to cross the huge interstellar distances to put robotic probes, and maybe, one day, humans, in orbit or on the surface of these potentially habitable worlds. Narrator Sean Bean takes the audience on dazzling rides aboard futuristic spacecraft, employing breakthrough concepts in physics, designed to achieve the speeds necessary to make a journey to another star system feasible. Just how far can our technology take us? Is warp drive more than just science fiction?

Showing at 7:00 PM Tuesdays and Fridays; 1:30 & 7:00 PM Saturdays.

Admission prices to the planetarium are $6.00 adults (18 to 59), $5.00 seniors (60+), $4.00 children (2 to 17) and CSI students with a valid student ID, children under age 2 admitted free.

BOARD APPROVES PROPOSED RULE ON ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP

The Idaho State Board of Education today approved a proposed and temporary rule intended to increase the number of Idahoans eligible to apply for the Opportunity Scholarship.

The proposed and temporary rule include:
  • Lowering the minimum GPA for all students from 3.0 to 2.7 and enabling eligible Adult Learners with a 2.5 GPA to apply for the scholarship and renew the scholarship as long as they maintain a minimum 2.7 GPA after returning to school.
  • Requiring Adult Learners to have "stopped out" for 24 months or more but makes an exception for students who enrolled in a maximum of two courses during that time.
  • Enabling Adult Learner Scholarship recipients to attend part-time.
  • Directing institutions to work with Adult Learner recipients to determine if they can receive college credits for prior learning gained in the military or in industry.

Requiring scholarship recipients to show progress on their education plans to maintain eligibility.

The Board approved several other rule dockets but also rejected a proposed rule on enrollment reporting for K-12, instructing staff to collect more public comment on the rule and bring it back to the Board for consideration as a temporary rule later this fall. All proposed rules will be presented to the Idaho Legislature for consideration during the 2020 legislative session.

Other Board actions include:

  • Approved first readings of new Board policies involving text book affordability for college students and making it possible for students to earn college credit when they need additional support in math and English courses.
  • Approved a request by Idaho State University to begin planning renovations of four campus residence halls. The work is not to exceed $5 million dollars and is subject to future Board approval of a plan for financing the project.
  • Approved a request by the University of Idaho to sell the 75 acre Sandpoint Research & Extension Center in Sandpoint. The facility has been closed for several years and the property will be sold to a local developer for $4 million. The U of I will use proceeds for other strategic priorities.
  • Approved a maintenance and improvement plan for the president's residence at Idaho State University. The historic Servel house was purchased by the university 65 years ago. Work will be spread out over four years and will cost $300,000 to be paid using university reserve funds. The last major work on the house occurred 25 year ago.
  • Agreed to consider more bachelor-level programs at Idaho community colleges based on local and regional needs.

DIRECT ADMISSIONS POSTCARD ARRIVING IN THE MAIL

Nearly 20,000 Idaho high school seniors are receiving a postcard this week alerting them to watch for their college admissions letter arriving later this month.

The postcard and the letter are part of the Idaho State Board of Education's Direct Admissions program, where all public high school seniors earned placement either to six or all eight of Idaho's public colleges and universities depending on their academic performance in high school.

The postcard's purpose is twofold; to raise awareness about the Direct Admissions letter and to remind students to start planning, because they will still need to apply before they are accepted either at a technical college or university.

"High school seniors and their families should look at their acceptance letter and mark October 1st on their calendars," State Board College and Career Advising Program Manager Byron Yankey said. "That's when they can apply to any Idaho college or university, for free using the Next Steps Idaho  website."

Last year, over 10,700 high school seniors (about 47 percent) used the Next Steps website to submit their college applications.  Each student applied to about three institutions on average.

SCPHDDisastersMake Sure You Are Ready to Protect Your Family

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Brianna Bodily, SCPHD Public Information Officer, 208-329-2898

Are you ready? Disasters happen.
Make sure you are ready to protect your family.

SOUTH CENTRAL IDAHO - This year the U.S. watched as communities in more than half of our nation's states fought measles epidemics. Some families were quarantined in their homes for weeks, while others faced unexpected medical bills.

As part of National Preparedness Month this September, South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) urges residents to take action now to prevent disease outbreaks in their communities and consider family health needs as they prepare their emergency kits and plans.

"You can help prevent a disease outbreak in your community by making sure you and your family are up to date on your immunizations and by practicing healthy hand hygiene," said Tanis Maxwell, SCPHD Epidemiologist. "If we face a large-scale disaster we might not have access to clean water, dry shelter and other things we take for granted. Preparations, like immunizations, will go a long way in protecting your family."

It's also important to check your 72 hour emergency kit to make sure you've stocked extra medication, water cleaning tablets, epi pens, and hand sanitizer. If you, or a loved one, are dependent on electrical medical equipment make sure you have a backup plan to handle a sudden loss of power.

"Remember, in an emergency you might not have time to pack anything extra," said Nelson Long, SCPHD Training and Exercise Coordinator. "Your emergency kit should have everything your family needs to stay healthy until you can go back to your home."

If you have any questions about making an emergency plan, or the broader plans in your county, please reach out to your local County Emergency Manager.
