This Week's Service:
In Defense of
'Spiritual but not Religious'

Adam Frank, acclaimed book author, NPR commentator, and astrophysics professor at the University of Rochester will share with us on this day. The recipient of a Hubble Fellowship, Prof. Frank is an expert on stellar formation. His popular science writings include regular contributions to Discover and Astronomy magazines, and the books About Time: Cosmology and Culture at the Twilight of the Big Bang and The Constant Fire: Beyond the Science vs Religion Debate.

This Week's Drop-In Discussion: Expectations. "On a recent vacation to Toronto, there were several instances where I was disappointed over a number of things ranging from costs to inadequate services," David Damico said. "On reflection, my frustration was the result of my expectations caused either from lack of knowledge or poor planning. This is something I'd like to avoid in the future. In this discussion, I'd like to address expectations and how we deal with disappointment. Can adequate foresight lead to a more settled mind?"
First U building Renovation Updates

The work on the pews and floor did start on Monday April 1st as planned.  As of Wednesday April 10, the protection of the organ and piano was done, the old carpet had been removed and a strategy for the removal and re-installation of the pews was in development.  The complex task of repairing the pews has begun.

Regarding the lighting, the cabling is complete.  What is holding us up is a comprehensive strategy for the safety of those whose task will be to maintain these lights, i.e. replacing the bulbs and doing miscellaneous adjustments.

Holding the Thursday concerts and the Sunday services in the lounge is off to a good start thanks to the contributions of an ad-hoc committee with Dolores DaLomba, Tim Mullins and Karl Abbott.

Unirondack Unirondack Scholarships

Unirondack is located in the western Adirondack Mountains in the midst of forever-wild forests. The main buildings of camp sit atop a hill overlooking beautiful Beaver Lake. Our performing arts center, boathouse and art shop, campfire circle, cookout area, athletic field and swimming beach sit directly at the water's edge.

Our enrollment is small relative to other children's camps, with approximately 20 counselors and 70 campers in each of our youth sessions, allowing counselors to provide personal attention to campers, creating a close-knit community. The exceptional young adults chosen to comprise our counseling staff receive professional training in leadership, program planning and implementation, conflict resolution, child development, safety and first aid, and methods of fostering an inclusive community.

Scholarships are available. For more detail, see Janet Perregaux and/or http://www.unirondack.org/.  Application deadline May 1, 2013.

Kids Cartoon-y We Made a Difference!

Thanks to the work of many advocates and members of faith communities around Rochester, including many of you who signed a letter last fall in support of child care subsidies for working families, the Governor and Legislature approved an increase of $3 million in funding for subsidies!  This is wonderful news to the families who, because of this assistance, will now be able to afford stable and safe child care.  And we all win in the end when the children do better in school and life because of their experiences in high-quality care early in their lives.

On behalf of those children, THANK YOU! And please extend this gratitude to the Governor and legislators who approved this increase by making a quick "thank you" phone call or sending them a brief note; you can identify your legislators and find contact information at the following: Governor Cuomo - www.governor.ny.gov, Assembly member - www.nyassembly.gov and State Senator - www.nysenate.gov
