2019 CAROLINA MEAT CONFERENCE:

In these classes, you will learn how to make the most of seasonal produce with simple, fast recipes and a bag of produce sourced from local farmers. Cost is $10 per class, which includes the cost of the produce. Each class will feature different recipes.

10 AM to 12 PM - mushroom hike
1 PM to 3 PM - how to grow edible mushrooms
Feel free to attend one or both of these sessions that will give you the knowledge to enjoy the fascinating world of fungi.
In the morning we will hold a traditional mushroom foray with a representative from the
Asheville Mushroom Club. Participants will explore
Riverbend Park trails and come back to the education room with mushrooms encountered. We will discuss the various mushrooms found in the park including which mushrooms are edible and poisonous.
In the afternoon, Craig Mauney, NC State extension specialist and mushroom farmer will show you how to grow your own mushrooms at home.

This survey asks you to share your opinion about the health status of our community. It is part of the community health assessment currently in progress in Catawba County. Information from the survey will be used to identify community health needs and concerns and then develop ways to address them. This survey is anonymous and should take less than 15 minutes of your time to complete.

Healthy Herbal Allies as Food and Medicine

Herbal foods and medicines provide some of the oldest, safest, and most effective healing in the world. Over the millennia, humans have learned how to harness the benefits of herbs to help the body return to its natural state of health. Come learn how herbs can enrich your life and serve as an important tool to care for yourself, your family, and your community in a non-toxic, affordable, and natural way.
In this workshop, you will learn

How herbalism has evolved over history and how other cultures around the world use herbs today

How to get more medicinal value out of the foods you already eat

How to incorporate the medicinal properties of culinary herbs into delicious recipes

How to identify and prepare easy to find herbs
-
How herbs can help improve your everyday health as well as safely and effectively complement other therapies, with the right guidance, for more significant health concerns.
This workshop will be as experiential as possible. You will be able to use all of your senses and get your hands dirty as you experience the herbs and herbal medicines we encounter.
By the end of this workshop you should feel comfortable with the basics of how to get started using herbs. We'll share several recipes and other resources that you take home to get going on your own.

Auxin Herbicide Training is required for all persons planning to apply dicamba (Engenia, FeXapan, or XtendiMax) to Xtend cotton or soybeans or 2,4-D (Enlist Duo or Enlist One) to Enlist cotton or soybeans. Take a look at the full schedule of training sessions around the state. 1 CEU for pesticide licenses N, D, O, X will also be given. Contact us (828-465-8240) if you missed the training. We do have a video viewing option.

Catawba County Youth Council
Thanks to Luke Fountain for serving as the county's youth delegate to attend the NC County Commissioners Conference in Greensboro. He participated in a Youth Voices Tract, along with other teens representing 4-H and Boys and Girls Club from their respective counties.
Luke was selected to attend based on his involvement in the Catawba County Youth Council and his special interest in government. Luke is also serving as a committee chair with the NC Youth Legislative Assembly, which is another leadership opportunity that grew from his involvement in Youth Council. As a YLA committee chair, Luke will research and draft a mock bill that will be debated and voted by teens attending YLA in Spring 2020.
Luke is a student with Lenoir-Rhyne scholars and has been part of the Catawba County Youth Council for the past 2 years.
Looking for an opportunity to grow your leadership skills and become more involved in government? We are now accepting applications for new students to join the Catawba County Youth Council.
The council meets monthly and with programs focused on local government, non--profit organizations, and leadership topics.
The Youth Council is a collaborative program of Catawba County Government, Catawba County United Way, and 4-H.

NC 4-H Congress
One of the highlights of the 4-H Summer is NC 4-H Congress, an annual event that brings together over 500 4-H'ers from across NC for workshops, state officer elections, state presentation contest and inspiring speakers.

Congress were (pictured left to right): Kat Stulpin, Lauran Surratt, Josh Carter, Joanna Kanupp, and Ava Bowman.
Kat Stulpin has been serving as a state officer for the past year and was in a key leadership role for the state event. Josh Carter was also part of the Congress planning team in his role as a district 4-H officer. Josh and Kat were recognized as NC 4-H college scholarship winners at the Awards Brunch at Congress. Kat was also awarded the Citizenship Trophy for her long-term and outstanding record of involvement in citizenship during her time in 4-H.
The 4-H presentation contest is held on opening day of Congress. Congratulations to the following Catawba County 4-H'ers on their award winning state presentations:
Lydia Smith - Gold Award, Safety 8-10 year old category
Joseph Hicks - Gold Award, Citizenship 8-10 year old category
Samuel Holdsclaw - Silver Award, Electric 14-18 year old category
Selah Sigmon - Silver Award, Careers and Entrepreneurship, 11-13 year old
Joanna Kanupp - Bronze Award, Entomology, 14-18 year old
4-H'ers were able to advance to the state presentation contest after being selected as district silver or gold presentation winners.
