THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER

What does the Book of Common Prayer say concerning the service of the Church?  The Holy Eucharist, the principle act of Christian worship on the Lord's Day and other major Feasts, and Daily Morning and Evening Prayer, as set forth in this book, are the regular services appointed for public worship of this Church.page 13

A Message from the Interim Rector

Interim rectors provide a parish an opportunity for healing and facing challenging problems. For example, the Vestry, School Board and I have worked for months constructing a framework to improve parish-school relations that we call "Mission Possible." More on that in another Banyan Tree. Another challenge was to update our Sunday worship service schedule to better fit the realities of Holy Nativity in 2019.
Beginning Sunday, September 15, Holy Nativity will combine its two Sunday Eucharists into a single 9:00 am service. This change will happen in conjunction with the previously planned "Welcome Back" brunch previously announced for that day. I hope that you will join us for worship and brunch on the 15 th. Come celebrate Holy Nativity!
In the interest of transparency, these four factors prompted the change:
  1. Declining attendance has made finding volunteers (altar guild, lectors, ushers, etc.) a growing challenge (burden might be the more accurate word).
  2. The larger the attendance, the greater the likelihood that visitors will choose to become regular attendees. Holy Nativity is blessed with a large beautiful nave. With only a dozen or two people present, the nave feels empty. We want to communicate to visitors that Holy Nativity is a vibrant congregation with a great future. Incidentally, the Invite-Welcome-Connect program Fr. Chris is promoting will also help us to turn visitors into communicants; I encourage you to support this important initiative that has proven successful in other parishes.
  3. Having two Sunday Eucharists inevitably creates two separate communities. Combining the services will strengthen our identity as a single community. Holy Nativity originally initiated a second Sunday service when attendance filled and then overflowed the nave.
  4. Changing the schedule now sets the stage for the next rector to succeed, yet leaves open the door for him/her to alter the schedule as program goals and needs dictate. In the Episcopal Church, the rector sets the worship schedule. I decided to consolidate our two Sunday services only after consulting with the Vestry, holding a forum between services and speaking with many early service attendees. The most common response I received when I asked people about the proposed change was, "Why haven't we done this sooner?"
The more difficult task was choosing the time of the single service. Attendees at the early service preferred 8:30; attendees at the later service preferred 9:00. Two sets of comments proved decisive: (1) our choir strongly pushed for 9:00 - they rehearse for an hour prior to the service and they all felt a 7:30 rehearsal was too early and (2) parents of young children (the few we have!) emphasized that the later time would make their lives easier and attendance more probable.
Plan now to join us in celebrating Holy Nativity at 9:00 am on September 15 th!

Holy Nativity Church will go to one Sunday Worship Service starting at 9am on September 15, 2019. Please mark your calendars for this change in our community life together. For more information please contact Fr. George.

51st ANNUAL MEETING OF THE CONVENTION
OF THE EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF HAWAI'I

The Treasurer's Two Cents
What a busy and exciting year. It began with hiring a new thrift store manager and a choir director, both of whom have immediately gotten to their tasks and are making a real difference.  The Rector Search Committee has spent many hours in considering candidates and doing "face to face" interviews across the Internet; soon selected candidates will journey here for closer consideration. And our school has a new Interim Head of School and the school year has been happily launched.
Our Rectory has been subjected to lots of maintenance and improvements and now virtually glows! None of this good news came without some costs beyond what we had hoped and budgeted. Nevertheless, all of it rises to the level of wise investments in our future. Our leadership folks have really been doing a splendid job.
And there is more: overall we are ahead on our pledges, thanks to some members who paid ahead before taking vacations and others who just like to help us keep ahead of our cash needs. The Rectory improvements were generously supported by the time, talent and treasure of a dedicated parishioner. And we were gloriously successful in raising $3000 for the Samaritan Counseling Center.
We do not consider stewardship only in the Fall. It is a year-round focus in how we prioritize our investments in program and property and how we consider where to direct our giving. At any moment you might be inspired! (Did you know "inspired" means having the Holy Spirit breathed into you?) Inhale and give from your heart.
Jean Steele
