Empire National Bank Thanked for Donation
The Community Family Literacy Project, Inc. extends a heartfelt thanks to Empire National Bank, and Mr. Bill Guiducci, Senior Vice President and Branch Manager of the Shirley location. Each year, Empire National Bank is the premiere sponsor for the 5K Run for Literacy held at Smith Point County Park in September. Although this year’s race was canceled due to Covid-19, Empire National Bank generously donated their sponsorship to our organization. The funds will be reinvested into our community to support our mission.

The Community Family Literacy Project, Inc. is a 501c3 organization that works in conjunction with the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library’s Literacy department to provide educational opportunities through our English as a New Language (ENL), Family Literacy, and Citizenship programs. Our mission is to strengthen the literacy skills of our patrons and their families as well as encourage civic engagement. We believe that education empowers individuals, families, and communities!

As parents themselves, Corbin and Kat Anderson share useful tips, tricks, and tools to get you ready for a successful upcoming school year. Some topics include setting up a learning environment, planning a schedule, positive feedback and dialogue with your child, ideas for a reluctant reader, and tips for participating in a live online class. Staff Picks of the Week: Origami Arts and Crafts Book
Samantha recommends the ebook Origami Arts and Crafts which you can download from Hoopla with your library card. She says “Are you a fan of arts and crafts? Have you tried making origami? Well, you're in luck! Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into decorative shapes and figures. This book follows illustrated step-by-step instructions to create fun origami projects such as a bracelet, a piano, a sailboat, and a colorful dodecahedron. There is a glossary to explain the vocabulary. This book encourages readers to explore the art of origami.” Access Origami Arts and Crafts HERE

Samantha and her sister made origami animal finger puppets from another book, Martha Stewart’s Favorite Crafts for Kids, found on Overdrive.

Watch a step-by-step video showing how to make this cute craft, with simply a square sheet of paper, on our Facebook page HERE
