Klezmer Workshop Series
Presented by KlezCalifornia
|
|
Sunday, September 8, 12:30-3:30pm
This tune workshop will be taught by ear. We will learn melodies from the collectors of the early 20th century, including Moshe Beregovsky, Sofia Magid and Sh. Anski. We will also spend time on varying the melodies, especially the cadences.

Want to be welcome at any jam session? A credit to your band? Beloved of bassists and dug by drummers? It's all about accompaniment! The best players know when to step back and support other musicians, lock in to the rhythm, follow chord changes, and jump in to comment on the melody. We will post simple tunes to learn by heart in advance, then review klezmer rhythm forms, read and write chord charts, learn how to hear changes coming, and how to make an educated guess about what they will be.

My connection to Yiddish might be typical for a California native of my generation. My grandparents Carol and Irving grew up speaking Yiddish but, living in New York City, spoke it mainly to avoid being understood by their children and grandchildren. In contrast, Uncle Joseph, who immigrated when older, mainly spoke and read Yiddish, and his English was limited and thickly accented. That generation's origins in the Yiddish-speaking world is a treasure to be passed on to subsequent generations who enjoy easier circumstances.
