DECEMBER 2014

The holiday season is here and one of the many joys of this time of year is spending time with friends and family at home. We are proud that in 2014 Habitat for Humanity hit an important milestone - through our work locally, the work done by our sister affiliates throughout the US and internationally, we have helped 1 million families change their lives through better housing.

As you decorate, bake and open your doors to guests, we ask that you also consider giving back. We want to share some good news to assure you that any holiday contribution you make to us will be well-spent. Charity Navigator has recognized Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles' (Habitat LA) adherence to good governance and other best practices with a four star rating. Only seven percent of the charities Charity Navigator evaluates have four consecutive four star ratings (and we are one of them)!

Thank you for all you have done to support our mission this year. Best wishes from all of us at Habitat LA for a wonderful holiday season and a very happy new year.

NEW TORRANCE ReSTORE NOW OPEN!

18600 Crenshaw Blvd.

Torrance, CA. 90504

There are always new and exciting things unfolding at our Habitat LA ReStores. The latest is a new South Bay location! Our Gardena ReStore has closed but a new Torrance ReStore is now open!

If you are trying to eliminate items from your home or office to make room for a new look in the new year, please consider making a donation to the ReStore. Examples of accepted materials include: appliances, exercise equipment, home décor, doors, furniture, lighting, electronics and hardware.

All proceeds support Habitat LA's mission to bring people together to build and renovate homes in partnership with low-income, hardworking families and individuals.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY

Our Adopt-A-Family Holiday Program is underway! It is a great way for you, your friends and family to spread a little extra holiday joy to families who recently moved into their new Habitat L A home or received home repair services due to a financial need. Habitat LA partner homeowners are hardworking, low-income families and individuals who are simply in need of a hand up, not a hand out. Many of them work serving greater Los Angeles as teachers, healthcare workers, government employees and members of the small business community.  A donation of $250 will sponsor an entire family, but a monetary or gift card donation of any amount will also make a big difference. Click here to donate & please share with your family & friends! The deadline for donations has been extended to December 12th!

"We sincerely appreciate your kindness and generosity. Thank you for bringing more joy to our family this holiday season. Seeing our children's faces with ear-to ear smiles is a beautiful feeling and you made that happen. Thank you."   - 2013 Adopt-a-Family Partner Homeowner recipient

HOLLYWOOD FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD-A-THON 2014!

This year's Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity Build-A-Thon (HBAT) 2014 focused on the Washington Neighborhood in Long Beach. In three days, more than 600 volunteers worked on the construction of new homes, a home rehabilitation and repairs for neighboring homes and community service organizations.

Additionally, this year's HBAT honored veterans by working alongside them to serve those in need.

We completed a lot of work and also heard from some special guests during our lunch programs. Actor Emily Bergl (Shameless); the Hon. Bob Archuleta and Chief of Police for the Long Beach Police Department, Jim McDonnell, were just a few of the special guests that recognized the work we are doing as part of our Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative in the City of Long Beach.

Thank you to all of our sponsors for making this event a great success, especially The Vons Foundation, Platinum Equity and US Bank. Visit our Flickr page to see all of the HBAT photos.

HOLLYWOOD COMES OUT TO BUILD!

This fall Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity hosted two fabulous build days! One was the  SHOWTIME ® /House of Lies/Shameless  build day in October in Lynwood, CA with casts and executives from two of their most popular shows and the other a  Trey Songz  birthday build day in November in Long Beach, CA.

More than a dozen Shameless/House of Lies talent came out for the unique SHOWTIME® sponsored build day including Oscar Nominee Don Cheadle, a very pregnant Kristen Bell, William H. Macy, Ben Schwartz, Dawn Olivieri, Glynn Turman, Donis Leonard, Jr., Larenz Tate, Shanola Hampton, Alicia Witt, Jeremy Allen White, Steve Howey, Emma Kenney and Emily Bergl. Habitat LA's own President and CEO Erin Rank built all day with the enthusiastic group as they installed siding, weatherproofed windows, sawed, nailed and painted.

R&B singer, Trey Songz, partnered and built with Habitat LA as part of his "30 Acts of Kindness" in celebration of his 30th Birthday month. Trey and 15 of his family and friends, including his mother and two brothers, spent the afternoon working hard and having fun in Long Beach. The group painted and installed siding, installed some electrical outlets and built eves onto the five bedroom home.

During lunch both build groups heard heartfelt testimonials from partner homebuyers. We applaud our Hollywood partners for taking time out of their busy schedules to help build hope, lives and communities. Thank you!

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The home dedications of Alex Hernandez in October and Trenisha Dorsey in November were the perfect events to lead us into the holiday season.

Alex Hernandez is a music teacher in a low-income community and also the proud homeowner of this year's Delta Home. Alex's home is the fourth home in greater L.A. to be funded and built by Delta Air Lines.

We also presented Trenisha Dorsey with the keys to her home. Trenisha is a single mother to three children and works for L.A. County's Department of Social Services. Thank you to Bank of America for donating this property that we were able to renovate in partnership with Trenisha.
