All Women are Invited to the New Year of Bible Studies
"No Hard Feelings?" Poetry and Emotions in the Old Testament
The women of Joy are invited to attend the monthly Women's Bible Study on the second Tuesday of every month, September through May, at 1:30 P.M. in the church Fireside Room.
This September, October, and November, we will study selections of Old Testament poetry from Job, Psalms, Lamentations and Song of Solomon. Drawing from the experiences of these ancient writers, we will learn to look for God for help in stewarding our deep emotions, finding hope and grace along the way.
The September session is entitled "Stewarding the Angst of Anger." We will study stewardship of emotions, specifically anger, through the Psalms. The Psalms will reveal sometimes surprising ways to express and contend with anger from God toward humanity, anger from humanity toward God, and anger from person to person.
The Bible verses are Psalms 44, 51, 69, and 137.
The September session will be led by Emilie Horken. See you on Tuesday, September 10, at 1:30 P.M. All are welcome!

ELCA Churchwide Assembly 2019
Last week the ELCA Lutherans from around the country all gather together to worship and deliberate and help discern where God may be leading us.
For a good recap of what happened check out the
Highlights of Assembly

Personal Reflections on the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly
By Marcia Lindseth
It was my privilege to be a one of 900 voting delegates at the ELCA's Churchwide Assembly in Milwaukee August 5-10. I, along with about 18 others, represented the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin at the Assembly. Joy Lutheran Church is one of approximately 200 churches in the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin. Our Synod is one of 56 Synods in the USA. The ELCA is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with nearly 3.5 million members in more than 9,100 worshiping communities across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region. The Churchwide Assembly is held every three years and it is the place where important decisions and actions are made concerning our church. We were "church together for the sake of the world."
Every day of the Assembly we gathered for worship and Holy Communion. We were a part of AMAZING worship experiences. We also had three excellent Bible Studies led by theologians from our "partner denominations." There were ten Plenary Sessions where the important "work" of the church was discussed and voted upon. I was excited about the decisions that the voting delegates made on behalf of the whole ELCA. Some of those decisions were as follows (in the words of our Synod Bishop):
- Passed an Inter-Religious Policy Statement while more than a dozen leaders from Jewish, Hindu, Islamic, African Episcopal Methodist (AME), Catholic, Moravian, Presbyterian, Episcopal, and Lutheran faith communities held hands on stage-what a powerful witness to the strength we have as faith communities together.
- Passed An Apology to People of African Descent - we apologized to our African American brothers and sisters who have been historic victims of slavery and racism. We pledged to address white privilege and work to confront attitudes of white supremacy. Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton said, after the declaration was read, "This recommitment means working toward a deeper understanding of slavery and its legacy, of institutional and structural racism, of white privilege, and of attitudes and foundations of white supremacy. It means praying for the renewal of this church as disciples of the living Christ."
- Passed the Social Statement on Faith, Sexism, and Justice a Lutheran Call to Action. This statement had been about ten years in the making. I had been a "Process Builder" working on this Statement in its early stages of development so I was happy to be among the voting delegates who almost unanimously voted to pass this Social Statement. It is an amazing witness to our church's stand against workplace discrimination, gender-based violence, patriarchy, and economic inequality.
- Re-elected on the first ballot the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton to a second six-year term as presiding bishop - the first time in the history of the ELCA that a presiding bishop has been elected, or re-elected, on a first ballot!
- Approved a resolution declaring the ELCA is a "sanctuary church body," encouraging participation in the ELCA AMMPARO initiative for migrant children, discernment of care for our immigrant neighbors in our context, and the promise of forthcoming resources for this work.
- Adopted a memorial that calls for the development of a social statement and social message on the relationship of church and state.
- Adopted a memorial to encourage all synods and congregations to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ordination of women in 2020, the 40th anniversary of the ordination of women of color in the Lutheran tradition, and the 10th anniversary of the ELCA's decision to remove barriers to ordination for people in same-gender relationships.
These are just highlights of some of the actions taken at this Churchwide Assembly. For more information, I encourage you to consult the ELCA website (elca.org) or talk to me about my very interesting experience as a delegate to the Churchwide Assembly.

Memorial Garden Progress
Thanks for your generous support
we have enough to get the project started this fall. If you want to take a walk through the memorial garden the paths have been painted on the grass so you you can get a feel for the garden.
Our landscape designer is willing to
incorporate plant material that we can donate...talk to Pastor Steve so we an compile a list for the designer to work with.
We have a large
unidentified gift that came through Edward Jones...if you made the gift we would like to able to acknowledge your generosity and attribute it to the memory of your loved one but we don't know who authorized the gift. If you want to keep it anonymous that is also fine.

Joy Lutheran Averts the Sins of 'Thou Shalt Not Steal'
SOLVE THE MYSTERY
"WIN A FREE TRIP"
Fill in the blanks_ _ _ identifying the names of the mystery people.
While doing the Lord's work, preparing a meal for "Sharing and Caring Hands" in Minneapolis, an unsolved mystery evolved right outside the church...in the parking lot.
There were many people involved, so the cars weren't easily identifiable, but when one of the cars has a Florida license plate and is making a suspicious noise, it got the attention of at least one passerby.
As this person ____________ bumped into me ____________ , she inquired about the car making a loud, shrieking noise. I was unable to help her, so I suggested that she go into the kitchen of the church to find out who the car belonged to.
Getting no response, she informed ___________, who, in turn, called the police and proceeded to follow church mandated protocol...that of searching all the rooms for any suspicious looking characters. Finding none, she proceeded to cooperate with the police.
After identifying the owner of the car, and calling him in the Country of Norway, they were able to determine who was driving the car. The culprit, _____________, came running out of the church with a butcher knife in each hand. He had been cutting cabbage, and when notified that the police were looking for him...his over-exuberance got him carried away.
His explanation of driving his friend's car while he was visiting Norway seemed a bit far-fetched and only he could have convinced a policeman of the legitimacy of his story.
He is a storyteller by nature, but seldom has he had to use those skills in such a disarming situation, so discerning that only the good and faithful would have believed him.
The cook ____________ had never before encountered such a far-reaching exposure to her cooking ministry. So, in the future, we'll defer such unorthodox activity to Pastor __________ before it goes viral clear around the world. Such out-reach is the mission of the church; only to be accomplished by another hand, and the hands of a lot of willing workers...headed up by ____________.
Correctly identifying the people in this short story will win you a "free trip"to Sharing and Caring Hands.
THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING.

News from Tim and Donadee Peterson
We came to Prescott in 1986 and Tim served as pastor at Joy Lutheran Church from 1986 to 1995. Now we have decided to move and are selling our house in Prescott. We are moving to Battle Lake, Minnesota, where we inherited a home from Donadee's parents.
But before living in Battle Lake we will living in Oslo, Norway. Tim has been hired to be interim pastor of the American Lutheran Congregation in Oslo. We will be leaving for Norway the first week of September and expect to be there between 4 and 10 months. The American Lutheran Congregation is an English speaking congregation. Norm Belland was pastor there about 18 years ago, just before he came to be pastor at Joy.
We enjoyed our time at Joy Lutheran Church and also the years we have lived in Prescott since leaving Joy. We will miss you! One of our children, John, and his wife Whitney, and our grandchildren Abe and Ava, will still be living in Prescott, so we will be around for visits.
God bless you all!

The church is not a building
The church is not a building, it is the people of God, wherever they are. For many of us, our lives are more mobile and family commitments may find us traveling on the weekend. So we have collected some resources to help you worship and be the church where you find yourself.
If you have access to WiFi the lots of resources available at your fingertips. If you are trying to unplug and get away from electronics you just need to prepare a bit ahead of time to print some resources.
One size does not fit all. If will be different if you have young kids or are on your own, so use what is helpful and adapt. Worship doesn't have to be an hour on a Sunday morning, it can happen when you are gathered around a meal table, or around a campfire at the end of the day, but a few minutes of focused attention can make a big difference.
This summer we are trying a new weekly home devotion that you can view online or download to take with you. It is called
