New Outreach Partnership!
Academy 4 Mentors Needed
This fall, we will begin a new partnership with Alice Contreras Elementary School and Academy 4 and we need your help! Academy 4 takes place one Friday afternoon a month during the school year. All fourth-grade students, mentors, and volunteers gather on the school campus on the same afternoon for a fun-filled time of leadership training and relationship building. We need 80 individuals to make this nine-month commitment for the 2021-2022 school year. All it takes is 90 minutes, once a month. On the day of, mentors will be provided with onsite training, easy to follow curriculum, and fun activities to do with your 4th grader.

Read Fort Worth Summer Porch Visits
Read Fort Worth’s goal is to “ensure all students read on grade level by 3rd grade to equip them on the path to success in school and in life!”

As you can imagine, the pandemic has complicated these efforts:
  • Last year, enrollment was down 4% across FWISD- that’s nearly 3,500 students!
  • Almost half of the unenrolled students were in PK-3rd grade
  • Data shows youngest learners have fallen furthest behind due to virtual learning and the COVID-19 slide.

Some good news:
  • Data also shows that increased attendance correlates with improved literacy scores
  • We can help promote fall FWISD attendance and enrollment, and connect families to additional support as needed

The Children’s Closet Box-It & Distribution Day
This UCC volunteer opportunity will ensure a smooth start to the school year for FWISD counselors who facilitate the distribution of school uniforms (donated by the Children’s Closet) to economically disadvantaged elementary students in the district.

Volunteers are needed to fold 40 boxes of shirts on Monday, August 2, in advance of Box-it and Distribution Day (BID Day) which is August 11. Additional volunteers will pack “Starter Kits,” that include uniform shirts and pants, for 40 schools, on the morning of August 11. Other volunteers will load the boxes into counselors’ cars as they drive through the church parking lot later in the day. The packing and loading work will be strenuous and the weather is likely to be hot.  Some additional volunteers will be needed to work indoors on BID Day (the 11th) to compile “supply bags” for counselors.

All Church Sunday School is in a new study on the book of James. According to New Testament professor N.T. Wright, "The letter of James is the most obvious New Testament example of ancient Israelite wisdom literature: the sifted, tested and collected wisdom of those who learned to trust God for everything and to discover how that trust would work out in every aspect of daily life."
Join Renee Hoke and Shannon Moore this Sunday for a lively conversation about the everyday wisdom of James.

The Leading Causes of Life
NEW WORSHIP SERIES | AUGUST 15 - SEPTEMBER 26

We are all familiar with the leading causes of death; cancer, heart disease, stroke, and even accidents. But, what are the leading causes of life? Jesus said that he came ‘that we might have life, and have it to the full’ (John 10:10). Saying “yes” to life in Christ offers us the opportunity to see the assets that create possibility and new ways of flourishing together in this world. In this series we’ll look at some of the factors in living the life that God intends for us – a life filled with vitality, meaning, and wholeness.
