SEPTEMBER 2019

CDBC 2019
We had another great year at the Chris Dudley Basketball Camp!  76 campers from around the world joined us in Vernonia, Oregon for a week of basketball, slip n' slide, fun activities and lots of laughs! This year we had 3 international campers as well as campers from 21 states.  NBA and international coach, Herb Brown joined us for a morning of working with the campers and NBA/college trainer, Bobby Medina brought the heat with some fun drills!
Next year's camp will be our 25th year of CDBC.  Camp will be hosted in Vernonia, Oregon July 26-31st.  For first time campers, registration will open on New Years Eve in your time zone.  For more information on registering, visit www.chrisdudley.org.

CDBC CAMPER 8 YEARS
CDBC STAFF 11 YEARS

Favorite Camp Memory
It is so hard to choose a favorite memory. I have just as many as a camper as on staff. I do remember my first day ever at camp I was playing 1 on 1 with Big Mike and faked him out and scored. From my initial minutes at camp, I knew it was going to be a great time.

What did you learn about diabetes at camp?
Test don't guess has definitely been implemented in my life. Whenever I'm wondering what my number is, I think of that mantra and usually take a blood test. I never regret it. Also being around hundreds of people that understand me and deal with similar struggles has really improved my out look toward living with diabetes when things get tough.

Do you stay in contact with anyone you met while attending camp?
Yes. Definitely a couple close people. Also, everyone that runs camp is always checking in and really supportive of me. It's really great. I grew up in California and now live in Portland, so I see locals from time to time. This is definitely because camp has drawn me here. I've also ran into camp friends in different states and even ran into Chris in downtown Portland!

Do you have any advice for present or future campers?
Live it up and be brave. Plan your life in relation to your one week escape at camp, that way everything great about it is with you year round. Embrace everything positive camp has given you to counter all the hardships diabetes and life throws at you. Also, thank your parents and the people that plan camp year round for making it happen.

Where are you now?!
Since camp, I graduated from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Sociology. I am currently a bike courier, and am in the works of obtaining a Paralegal degree with the hopes of working for groups that exonerate people from prison. I really wouldn't be where I was or on the path I have chosen if it wasn't for having camp and Chris   Dudley as a role model during my formative years.
