ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR NOVEMBER 23, 2014:
NEXT SERVICE: Sunday, November 30: I'm Waiting...The season of Advent begins today on the Christian liturgical calendar. Its call to patient openness is one that we all might take to heart. Rev. Celie Katovitch.
NEXT DROP-IN DISCUSSION: Sunday, November 30:Small Thanks. We give thanks for big things such as family, friends and health, when we have them, but what about the small things, such as wheels on luggage? Phil Ebersole will led a discussion of the small things in life for which to be thankful.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Kids ages four and older are invited to join us in the sanctuary this Sunday for a service for all ages. Nursery care for babies and younger children is on the second floor provided throughout the service. We also have seating in our second floor foyer, where parents can hold their little ones and listen to the service via speaker.
ARE YOU NEW TO FIRST UNIVERSALIST? Have you come a few times and want to find out more about Unitarian Universalism and our congregation? Then stop by the Welcome Table in the Clara Barton Lounge during coffee hour. You'll find friendly folks there every Sunday who are eager to talk with you!
A WHOLE LOT OF CHANGE! Our annual change drive brought in over $750- wow!! Thanks to all who contributed, and a special thanks to Paula Marchese, Lauretta Young, and Karl Abbott for staffing the change table, as well as Dave VanArsdale for hauling the heavy load to the bank.
HOLIDAY SHOPPE GIFTS NEEDED! Our Holiday Shoppe starts Sunday, November 30 during coffee hour! If you have items to contribute, we welcome you to bring them to church any time- you can drop them at the church office on Sunday. We are looking for things which can be sold for $20 or less- new or very gently used ("re-gifting" is encouraged!), as well as hand crafted items and baked goods. IF YOU ARE NEW to First Universalist or to Unitarian Universalism, we invite you to take part in two orientation sessions designed to help you to become more familiar with both. Today, we'll be talking about our faith journeys...where we come from and what brought us to First Universalist. We'll have a conversation about what it means to belong to a liberal faith tradition. On December 7, we'll discuss our order of service and hymn book...the meaning behind different parts of our service and what resources you can find in our hymnal.
Both sessions will begin at 12:15 in the Adult Lounge on the second floor and last for about an hour. Child care will be available. Come to one or both sessions. We look forward to getting to know you better.
UNION THANKSGIVING SERVICE: Thursday, November 27, 11 am at Temple Beth El, 139 South Winton Road. Everyone is welcome to attend.
BOOK GROUP: Sunday November 30 at 12:15 pm in the Adult Lounge. We'll discuss "Orphan Train" by Christina Baker Kline. This is a novel about a search for family which takes the reader on an historical journey starting in NYC and continuing to points west. All are welcome. JAN HICKMAN CLOSEOUT BOOK SALE: Jan Hickman is moving and has to dispose of her books. Everything must go! Her collection, which includes a huge selection of cookbooks, will be offered for sale in the Clara Barton lounge during coffee hour on Sunday, Dec. 7. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the church.
RAIHN* NEEDS YOU! First Universalist's next RAIHN Week is Dec. 14-21 when temporarily homeless families will stay in our church for the week. Providing our RAIHN guests with good food and a warm, safe place to stay may be the most significant Christmas gift we give this holiday. If you haven't attended training for RAIHN, you can still volunteer to help with the following activities: set up, clean up, launder bedding. If you're unsure what a specific task involves, ask us about shadowing a seasoned volunteer. We'll be happy to find a volunteer who will show you what's involved.
