A Conversation with Bill & Li
|
|
Administrator Li Chen and CEO Bill Graves have been spending a lot of time in the courtyard kitchens, brainstorming ways to enhance dining experiences for residents
.
What's cooking at Quincy Point?
Bill: A timely question! Food is the next focus for our Person-Directed Care initiative. Everyone loves our food, but we want to
enhance the dining experience we offer.
Li: In talking with residents and families, we know that while they appreciate the freshness and quality of our meals, they would like more options and a more home-like style of dining.
Bill
: We are taking a look at how we can transition some of the food preparation and serving out of our central kitchen and into the courtyards where people live - just like home. We want to serve fresh, hot food, directly to each resident at their table, instead of portioning food in the main kitchen.
Li:
Our goal is to offer more options during meal times, and the opportunity for residents to make those choices right from their dining table, instead of in advance. We also know that the aroma of food cooking will stimulate appetites, and in turn, lead to greater enjoyment of meals and the health benefits that go along with that.
Great idea. How can that work?
Bill: Right now we are consulting with engineers and architects from Levi & Wong, the team that designed our campus, to determine the best way to approach this plan. We already have servery kitchens on each courtyard, so this idea has been part of the vision for SCM@QP since day 1.
Li: There is a lot to work out, but we're excited and will keep you posted!

"This is only a drill!"
It was all hands on deck as South Cove Manor rehearsed a disaster, joining other care communities for a region-wide drill on June 11th. Coordinated by the Massachusetts Long Term Care Mutual Aid Plan (MassMAP) of which South Cove is a member, our practice scenario was a tropical storm with flooding, necessitating the simulated evacuation of 18 residents.
|
|
South Cove Manor has rock solid emergency response plans which may be triggered by weather, power failure, or another incident. Emergencies
may require sheltering in place, partial evacuation, or accepting displaced residents from other care communities. Plans are refined quarterly and a full scale drill is executed annually.
A simulation exercise starts with a team session in the command center and concludes with debriefing and evaluation to identify opportunities for improvement. There is no such thing as being too prepared to ensure the safety of those in our care. Our staff did a fantastic job!
A big thank you to
Quincy Fire Department and Brewster Ambulance
for taking part in our drill.

Nurse Practitioner Students Design
Self - Care Plan for Caregivers
|
|
Nurse Practitioner students from the Mass General Hospital Institute of Health Professions (MGHIHP) recently completed a six week clinical rotation at South Cove Manor.
June and July are vacation months for many, but six nurse practitioner students from MGHIHP spent the summer honing their nursing leadership skills during a clinical placement at South Cove Manor at Quincy Point.
The culmination of each MGHIHP clinical rotation is a community project and presentation to the host site's management team. This summer, after observing the strong relationships between South Cove residents and their caregivers, the future nurse practitioners selected "Self Care for the Caregivers" for their community project.
The group researched the potential for b
urnout and compassion fatigue among nurses and other direct caregivers, and noted that South Cove's high staff morale and comprehensive employee communication and activity efforts are effective ways to support our team. The students' presentation recommended additional strategies to strengthen caregivers' resilience and well-being through self-care including guided meditation, journaling, a focus on work-live balance and stress management techniques.
We love having students as part of our community and thank MGHIHP for partnering with us.
