Walnut Creek Community Service Day: Saturday, October 12
|
|
Help make Walnut Creek shine by being part of their Community Service Day 2019, set for Saturday, October 12.
This year’s line-up features more than 50 half-day projects, including projects at nearly all public schools, at libraries, in the parks, gardens and creeks, and in the downtown. In addition, many non-profits are sponsoring projects – from Animal Rescue Foundation to the Historical Society. And, there will be two food drives, one in Rossmoor, the other community-wide.
Community Service Day kicks off with a free pancake breakfast from 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. at Heather Farm Park Community Center, courtesy of the Lions Clubs of Walnut Creek. From there, volunteers will fan out across Walnut Creek to work on their projects. Some projects fill up fast; volunteers are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

Stone Valley Middle School Ribbon Cutting

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District invited community leaders and residents to the Stone Valley Middle School ribbon cutting on August 22nd, recognizing the grand opening of its new $37.5 million classroom and multi-purpose room facilities.

7th Annual Autos of Alamo
|
|
The Alamo Improvement Association is presenting the 7th Autos of Alamo festival - a free community event which includes live music, beer and wine and a large assortment of fascinating cars. In addition to the classics, antiques, hot rods and custom cars, there will be selected new cars on display. The raffle and auction will include wine tours, certificates from local businesses and the famous barrel of wine bottles. 24th Annual Lafayette Art & Wine Festival
|
The 24th annual Lafayette Art and Wine Festival will be held on from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21st & from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22nd.
Admission is free and there is free parking at the BART lot with a free shuttle to the festival.
The festival includes over 300 arts, crafts, and fine art booths including the Local Arts Alley in La Fiesta Square.
Wine and beer glasses and drink tickets are sold throughout the festival at centrally located ticket booths. Combination packages are available with big discounts. Attendees MUST BE 21 years of age to purchase glasses, drink tickets and be served. Over 30 food vendors and downtown restaurants are in the festival footprint.
There will be free music; Bands play non-stop on three stages plus a Family Stage. There are also Kid Zones and rides for all ages. Costs vary per ride/activity.
The festival footprint encompasses wonderful local merchants featuring restaurants, jewelers, day spas, linen shops, clothing, gifts and business services.

MOFD Planned Road Closures
|
The Moraga Orinda Fire District has planned road closures as part of the ongoing work on the North Orinda Shaded Fuel Break project.
Starting September 3rd - 5th, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily, one lane of Bear Creek Road will temporarily close. This lane closure will occur on Bear Creek Road between Camino Pablo Road and just past the PG&E power Station located on Bear Creek Road.
The week of September 9 - 13, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Happy Valley Road, between Sundown Terrace and Bear Creek Road in Orinda will keep one lane open for emergency vehicles, and residents within the closure may be escorted through the work site.

Contra Costa County Public Works Urges Road Users to
Exercise Safety in School Zones
|
Contra Costa County Public Works encourages all road users to be extra careful as they travel to and from school this year. According to the Contra Costa County Office of Education, there are 177,770 K-12 students enrolled in 285 public schools in 18 school districts located throughout Contra Costa County. Private school enrollment adds over 19,000 students in Contra Costa County as well.
After a long summer and with the excitement of a new school year, children may not be fully aware of their surroundings as they walk, bicycle, or bus to school. Parents and other drivers should leave early, stay alert, and be extra cautious in school zones. The first few weeks of school can be extra stressful as everyone gets back into their school time routines. Please be respectful of others and the rules of the road during this critical time.

Claire is a rising senior at Monte Vista High School in Danville.
CAPA, the Chinese American Political Association, was founded in 1984 by a group of Americans of Chinese ethnicity as a non-partisan, grass roots organization to provide a political voice for the Asian community and help lobby for issues that promote fairness and diversity in our society.

Attend the Danville Citizens Police Academy This Fall
Seven-week Program Gives Behind the Scenes Look at Police
|
The Danville Police Department is inviting members of the community to take part in the Fall Citizens Police Academy. This seven-week program is designed to provide a look into the day-to-day aspects of law enforcement, and a deeper understanding of how police operate.
Twice each year, the police department holds a Citizen Academy, to help inform the public on the job of a law enforcement officer. Over the course of the program, attendees will hear from guest speakers on topics such as patrol procedures, traffic enforcement, investigations, and a criminal justice overview. In addition, over two Saturdays the group will have a tour of the dispatch center, a firearms demonstration, tour of the Martinez Detention Facility, driving course, and force options simulator training.
The Academy runs on Wednesday evenings from September 18, 2019 – October 30, 2019. The two Saturday sessions will be on September 28, 2019 and October 12, 2019.

Contra Costa Elections March 2020 Photo Contest
|
The Contra Costa Elections Division is kicking off what promises to be a busy election year in a fun, unique way.
The office is holding its third bi-annual photo contest, and the grand prize winner will be featured on the cover of the March 2020 Voter Information Guide, which goes out to over 650,000 registered voters in Contra Costa County. The contest theme is “The Flora and Fauna of Contra Costa County.”
The contest begins Thursday, August 1st and submissions are due by midnight on September 30th. Entries must be submitted digitally, along with a written photo description of no more than 100 words. There is no entry fee.
Past covers have featured photos highlighting the beautiful sights and history throughout the county, which enhances the voters’ experience. The second and third place winners will also have their photos featured on the Elections Division website, in the office lobby and in other elections publications. Rich Hall of Walnut Creek, the winner of the November 2018 Photo Contest, says that he hopes his photo capturing service at the Pleasant Hill Library inspires others to participate in the voting process.
The Elections Division held the first photo contest in 2016, and has received more than 100 entries during that time. Some of those submissions are featured on the Contra Costa Elections website, where you can also find more information and photo submission forms:

Contra Costa County Fish and Wildlife Committee
Accepting Grant Applications
|
The Contra Costa County Fish and Wildlife Committee is now accepting applications from individuals and groups interested in enhancing the fish and wildlife resources of the County. Grant applications must be received by Monday, January 6, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.
The Fish and Wildlife Committee strongly encourages applications related to public education, improving habitat, scientific research, threatened and endangered species, and resolving human/wildlife interaction issues. In addition, the Committee wishes to fund one or more projects that increase collaboration with law enforcement agencies, the court, and community cultural organizations on enforcement issues and education focusing on communities that may be unaware of local fish and game laws. Projects that provide multilingual signage and educational materials are encouraged.
The Fish and Wildlife Committee awards grants to non-profit organizations, schools and government agencies. The Committee generally does not recommend funding for operating costs and overhead, such as benefits or utilities, or on-going staff support for an organization. Further, projects awarded monies from the Fish and Wildlife Propagation Fund must meet the requirements of Section 13103 of the Fish and Game Code.
Funding for the grant program is generated from fines for violations of the Fish and Game Code and Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations. The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors receives the Committee’s recommendations and holds final decision-making authority over the awarding of grants.
During the 2019 regular grant cycle a total of $67,267 was awarded to 10 projects. The awards ranged from $1,025 to $21,580.00.

11th Annual Sustainability Awards Gala

Sustainable Contra Costa will present the Leadership in Sustainability Awards at the 11th Annual Awards Gala on September 17th at the Pleasant Hill Community Center. This fun and inspiring event supports and celebrates local individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions and commitment to a healthy environment, economy, and society - so that Contra Costa remains a wonderful place for generations to come.
The awards program will also feature their Visionary Partner Central Contra Costa Sanitary District presenting their Pollution Prevention Awards, as well as their Benefactor Partner, the Contra Costa Green Business Program presenting new and re-certified green businesses.

Free Teen/Young Adult Heart Screening Sept 15
|
On Sunday September 15, 2019, a free heart screening has been set up for teens and young adults at Monte Vista High School.
While few parents think of heart issues as something that could affect children, an estimated one in three hundred school aged children suffer from an undiagnosed heart defect, many of which could lead to cardiac arrest and death.
The risk of complications can be higher for students who are active in sports, gymnastics, dance or other strenuous activities. Often the first warning sign is death. To help find these hidden abnormalities, the Via Heart Project will conduct a free screening open to all young people aged 12-25 on Sunday, September 15, at Monte Vista High School, 3131 Stone Valley Road, Danville, CA 94526.
The event is generously sponsored by the Citizen Corp Council of San Ramon Valley, San Ramon Regional Hospital Foundation, Monte Vista High School, City Center Bishop Ranch, and the Rotary Club of Danville CA.
The screening is conducted by volunteer San Ramon and Bay Area health professionals, including cardiologists, sonographers, and nurses. It includes a health history interview, EKG test, and a focused echocardiogram. The entire process takes about 60-90 minutes, and is totally non-invasive—there are no needles or x-ray exposure. Each teen’s confidentiality, privacy, and individual modesty is respected throughout.
This screening is important because some 7,000 to 10,000 school-aged children die each year nationwide from sudden cardiac arrest, often from conditions that could have been detected in advance. Yet neither EKG nor cardiac ultrasound is included in the typical annual physical. Via Heart Project screening is supplementary to, but does not replace, a child’s annual exam or school sports physical. Participants will also have the option to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) skills during the screening.

The Alliance for Girls' 6th Annual Conference: A Movement for Equity will be held in Oakland on Thursday, October 3rd. Alliance for Girls is the largest regional alliance of girls' organizations and leaders in the United States, and its conference attracts hundreds of exceptional, intergenerational leaders from across the country.
From TED speakers to legislators, advocates to funders to girl leaders, A Movement for Equity is convening the mavericks of the girls' movement to engage in critical conversations, and create a blueprint together for the future of girls.

Contra Costa County Seeks Applicants to Community Advisory Board (CAB) on Public Safety Realignment

Contra Costa County is seeking applicants who may be interested in serving on its 15-member Community Advisory Board (CAB) on Public Safety Realignment.
The Community Advisory Board (CAB) on Public Safety Realignment was established by the Community Corrections Partnership (CCP) Executive Committee in December 2012 to provide input on community needs; assess implementation of the realignment plan; review data on realignment outcomes; advise the CCP on community engagement strategies; provide recommendations for ongoing realignment planning; advise County agencies regarding programs for implementation in the County; and encourage outcomes that are consistent with the County's Reentry Strategic Plan.
The CAB is composed of 12 Voting Members and 3 Alternate Members with expertise in adult education within a correctional setting, domestic violence prevention, workforce development, behavioral health issues, post-release reentry services, services for reentering women, criminal and drug court, and law and policy related to issues of the formerly incarcerated and crime survivors. All CAB members either live or work in Contra Costa County.
The County is now seeking applications for two (2) of the Voting Member seats and three (3) Alternate Member seats. All interested community members are encouraged to apply.
Appointments to the CAB will be for a term of three years. Members will serve without compensation, stipends, or reimbursement of expenses. The CAB meets on the second Thursday of each month from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. at the Probation Department (50 Douglas Drive, Second Floor, Martinez, CA).
Applicants will be interviewed by the Outreach and Community Engagement Committee (OCEC) of the CAB. The nominations for the CAB members will then be forwarded to the full CAB for consideration and recommendation to the CCP for appointment action.

Contra Costa Sustainability Commission is Accepting Applications
|
The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors is now accepting applications from individuals to fill one (1) at-large seat and two (2) alternate seats on the Contra Costa County Sustainability Commission. Applications are due by Monday, September 16, 2019 at 5:00 P.M.
The Sustainability Commission has twelve members and five alternate members, all of whom are residents of the County. The Sustainability Commission advises the Board of Supervisors and staff on design and implementation of the County’s Climate Action Plan, including opportunities to realize equity and fairness across the diverse communities of Contra Costa County and how to better engage County residents and businesses on climate issues.
At this time, applications are being accepted for the following seats:
• One member representing environmental justice issues and who lives in a frontline, or "disadvantaged," community, and who reflects the geographic diversity of the County. The other environmental justice seat is held by a resident of Richmond.
• One alternate from District 3, to be appointed by Supervisor Burgis. The applicant must be a resident of District 3.
• One alternate from District 5, to be appointed by Supervisor Glover. The applicant must be a resident of District 3.
The Board of Supervisors considers applications from all interested individuals; the Board’s Sustainability Committee conducts interviews for at-large seats. The term of office for all three seats will be through March 31, 2021. There is no term limit at this time.
Sustainability Commission meetings usually are held the fourth Monday of February, April, June, August, October, and December. The remaining meetings this year will be October 21, and December 9 (the October and December meeting dates have been modified from the fourth Monday).

Moraga Rotary Honors Cliff Dochterman for 60+ Years as a Rotarian
|
Cliff Dochterman of Moraga was treated to a party on July 27th with about 160 Rotarians, spouses, and friends on hand to celebrate his 60+ years as a Rotarian, including his term as President of Rotary International (RI) the “world president” in 1992-‘93. Present were many of Cliff’s closest friends in Rotary, including Past RI President Rick King of Fremont; Past Vice President of RI John Matthews of Mercer Island, WA; current Director of RI Brad Howard of Oakland and former Director of RI John Blount of Santa Rosa. Many Past District Governors also attended, and other Rotarian friends came from Hawaii and Arkansas. The event was conducted by Cliff’s club, the Rotary Club of Moraga.
Most of Cliff’s family also attended the event; his sister, Ceta Dochterman, his children Cliff Jr. and Claudia Mennutti, and other family members. Cliff was also honored by a Boy Scout color guard from Troop 246, as he has been a lifetime supporter, leader, and contributor to Boy Scouts of America.
Cliff was honored as the primary instigator for Rotary International starting the Polio Plus campaign to eradicate the dreaded disease of polio from the earth. This campaign was later joined by UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and the U. S. Center for Disease Control & Prevention, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, & several national governments and charities. This campaign is very close to success. Cliff was also honored by a certificate of recognition for this service from Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, and was given a Certificate of Recognition from the recent RI President, Barry Rassin of Bermuda.
Cliff has always been an excellent speaker, and has been in great demand over the years to speak to Rotarians and other groups. He is hailed as the one person who has given a speech to the most Rotarians ever.

These volunteer boards usually meet monthly and advise the Board of Supervisors on a variety of issues. They play a vital role in county government, and the input provided is invaluable.
Affordable
Housing Finance Committee
Works with the Department of Conservation and Development to develop recommendations for the Board of Supervisors concerning the allocation of Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership Act funds among eligible affordable housing programs and projects. Currently, the annual allocation is approximately $5 million in funds for affordable housing development.
To advise on issues and concerns related to services provided by the County or other local agencies located within its boundary, which includes parks & recreation, lighting & landscaping, land use, code enforcement, public safety, and transportation.
Alamo Police Services Advisory Committee (CSA P-2B)
To advise the Board of Supervisors and the Sheriff's Department on the needs of the Alamo/Danville community for police services.
Established to decide disputes between property owners and the Assessor's Office. Disputes are heard by the Assessment Appeals Board, which is composed of members appointed by the Board of Supervisors.
County Service Area P-5 Citizen Advisory Committee (Roundhill Residents only)
To advise the Board of Supervisors on the needs of the Alamo community for extended police services for Roundhill.
