Painted Lady Butterfly on Anise Hyssop in the gardens of Reeves-Reed Arboretum
In This Issue
From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,

So many of us associate the fall season as a winding down of the year. We shelve our short sleeve shirts and sandals, trade the beach gear for school gear, put up storm windows and focus on hunkering down for the cold weather ahead.

And although we'll spend a bit of time this fall cleaning up the gardens and putting 'to bed' our flower and vegetable beds, the next few months at Reeves-Reed Arboretum are nothing close to hunkering down.

What's new this fall, you ask (and I'm glad you did)? Here's just a few items to tease your imagination:
  • September 29, the first annual RRA OKTOBERFEST! Complete with dirndl and lederhosen. Beers and brats, polka and pints - whatever you call it, expect a lot of fun at this sure to be recurring seasonal event!
  • Fall In Love With Trees - 4-part series of lectures on trees, partnering with the City of Summit's Shade Tree Advisoty Committee, starting September 12.
  • Meet-the-Artist Reception for Karen Fitzgerald 360° - Cosmic Landscape Revelations, on September 19. Don't miss this opportunity to get the artist's personal perspective on her extraordinary work.
  • Bus trip to the Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia, October 16. Get a bird's-eye view of the forest from 50 feet up, perched on a canopy walk high above the ground - simply thrilling!
  • CELEBRATE FALL, October 20 - our annual autumn festival when we welcome back our herd of 'green goats', enjoy the golden autumn colors and crisp weather, and sample some yummy fare from our many vendors. With Halloween right around the corner, families can explore our Spooky Trail and decorate a pumpkin.
All this and more. Simply go to our website for more information and to register. Don't miss out on the fun. Hunkering down....indeed!!

See you in the garden,

Oktoberfest!
Oktoberfest 2019
Sunday, September 29 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm

According to Ben Franklin, "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." So grab your favorite beer drinking friends and come to Reeves-Reed Arboretum on Sunday, September 29, when Put the 'PUB' in Public Garden turns the Arboretum into a beer garden with OKTOBERFEST 2019!

Sponsored by Peerless Beverage Company, supplying Warsteiner Beer, and The Meat House, offering bratwurst and pretzels, and accompanied by the popular oompah band, Doppelgänger, this festival is sure to turn into a recurring seasonal hit.

Brewed in Amsberg Forest Nature Park in North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany, Warsteiner is considered one of Germany's leading premium pilsner brands. Rated among "the best in Summit", The Meat House will be providing both the sustenance as well as the service for the Arboretum's Oktoberfest 2019. And a little about Doppelgänger...well, picture a 5 piece band dressed in German attire, featuring an accordion, clarinet, tuba, guitar, drums and vocals, and you're set for an afternoon fête of fun and frolic in the garden. And in true Oktoberfest style, the band and tables will be under a large tent!

Oktoberfest attire highly encouraged! There will be special prizes for best costumes.  If beer is not your beverage of choice, a limited amount of German/Austrian wine and other non-beer options will be available.

Oktoberfest 2019 is a fundraiser for the Arboretum. Admission to the afternoon's flavorful festivities is $100 per person with a special RRA member rate of $75 per person for a limited time. Purchases of 8 or more people in one transaction will guarantee a reserved table for your party. Admission includes bottomless beer, a bratwurst, and a pretzel. You must be 21 and over to attend the Oktoberfest. And the  first 200 guests will receive a customized 22 ounce beer stein!

Cement Leaf Make & Take Workshop
Part 1 "Make": Sunday, September 15
Part 2 "Take": Sunday, September 22
Both sessions from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm

Whether as a prelude to a water feature, a functional but stylish solution to gutter overflow, or a simple garden ornament, leaf sculptures are beautiful additions to your garden and home. Except for the mess in its creation. Which is where RRA comes in! Leave the chaotic part of this surprisingly easy craft to us and take home a beautiful garden sculpture. Registration is required.

Note: This workshop is messy and hands on. Masks, aprons, and gloves will be provided, but please dress for a mess! Workshop will take place in the RRA Hoop House.

Part 1 "Make":   Using an assortment of leaves from the Arboretum grounds (or bring some from your own garden!), we will be mixing our own cement and sculpting it into unique shapes.

Part 2 "Take":   Your cement will be ready to remove the leaf and reveal your creation! Use a variety of paints to complete your masterpiece and take home!
