This week is Inauguration Week, in celebration of Darryll J. Pines, the 34th president of the University of Maryland. Inauguration activities will continue throughout the week, with arts highlights on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (see the details below). Please join us for these virtual events!
The Rebels and Revels Virtual Symposium on the Theatre of the Middle East continues this week, with three special performances and the last panel on Thursday at 3PM. We finish up the week with our annual Henson Awards Showcase, featuring student projects funded by the Jim Henson Fund for Puppetry. Check out all the details below.
Finally, if your class is presenting a public showing of end-of-semester work, please email Bobby Hunter at rhunter1@umd.edu with your course title, the date/time of your showing, and the access link (Zoom or otherwise). We will compile a list so that folks can sign up and attend the showings.

Inauguration of Darryll J. Pines

Celebrate the installation of Dr. Darryll J. Pines as the 34th President of the University of Maryland with a week of events showcasing the University of Maryland’s greatness.
Check out these arts highlights:
- Monday, April 19, 5PM: "The Art of Humanizing Grand Challenges." A moderated panel of arts and humanities experts provide insights on some of today’s Grand Challenges from a historical, cultural and artistic perspective.
- Tuesday, April 20, 7PM: "The Life and Legacy of David C. Driskell." President Pines joins Driskell Center Director Curlee Holton to reflect on the life and legacy of the late artist, scholar, curator and distinguished university professor emeritus.
- Thursday, April 22, 7PM: "Moving Maryland Forward: A Celebration of the Inauguration of Darryll J. Pines." This evening celebration features a series of Grand Challenges lightning talks, performances and remarks from special guests, including President Pines. This event will include a feature on the TDPS collaboration, "Subject to Change."

Rebels and Revels: A Virtual Symposium on the Theatre of the Middle East

Performance dates: April 19 and 21 at 7PM, April 20 at 5PM
Final panel: April 22 at 3PM
"Rebels and Revels: A Virtual Symposium on the Theatre of the Middle East" is a public humanities event that explores through scholarship and performance how theatre in the Middle East is shaped in its diaspora, and how the artists navigate Middle Eastern theatre history in their creative processes.

Henson Awards Showcase

The talented student recipients of the Jim Henson Fund for Puppetry will perform/present their funded projects. The recipients are: Christina Robson, Bill Kassay, Tristan Koepke, and Channing Tucker.
The School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies hosts an annual competition and recipients are awarded funds to create a puppet project or performance. The Jim Henson Fund for Puppetry was established by Jane Henson '55 to honor the memory of Jim Henson '60, creator of the world famous Muppets.

In this varied, vibrant and celebratory dance presentation, the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies offers new works of art in motion. The performance consists of a selection of undergraduate and graduate dance student choreography and works by artist-in-residence Marielis Wentworth Garcia and guest choreographer Chuck Wilt, artistic director of UNA Productions based on the west coast.

At the end of each academic year, our MFA Design candidates present their design portfolios for review by faculty and local design professionals. This year, the portfolio review will take place on Zoom. Design portfolios include studio projects as well as fully realized academic and professional scenic, costume, lighting or projection designs. NEW Join co-instructors Michael Olmert (English professor) and Jonelle Walker (TDPS PhD candidate) for ENGL409M/THET428E: Special Topics in Advanced Theatre and Performance; Literature, Art and Architecture in London this summer. This course will be a virtual visit to London and some of its surrounding towns and villages important to the study of literature, history, archaeology, architecture, and art. Camp Rim Rock, an all-girls overnight summer camp located in West Virginia, is hiring Performing Arts staff for Summer 2021. They are seeking camp counselors who have an outgoing personality, a good sense of humor, strong teaching skills in your activity area, good leadership ability, and experience in supervising and instructing children. Campers range in ages from 6 to 15, and all age groups work towards a short performance at the end of a two-week session. Studio Theatre has opened applications for next year's apprenticeship program. As a respected midsized theatre, Studio is both ambitious enough to provide invigorating programming and small enough to allow its apprentices unique access to the theatre’s artistic and administrative leadership. The work is rigorous and rewarding; apprentices have a full schedule, and work together with the staff to meet the demanding deadlines of the field. Night and weekend hours are sometimes required.
