Keys Tourism Advisory:

KEYS TOURISM ADVISORY
August 29,2019
Dorian's Potential Impacts Remain Uncertain
Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami and National Weather Service Office in Key West continue to emphasize challenges in predicting specific Hurricane Dorian impacts to areas of Florida including the Keys.
NHC primary messages are:
* Increasing likelihood of life-threatening storm surge along portions of the Florida east coast late this weekend or early next week.
* Residents should have their hurricane plan in place and listen to advice given by local emergency officials.
* The risk of devastating hurricane-force winds along portions of the Florida peninsula continues to increase.
* Regardless of the exact track of Dorian, heavy rains are expected to occur over portions of Florida this weekend and early next week.
Based on the Thursday midday forecast from the National Hurricane Center, calling for a Category 4 storm, Key West Warning Coordinating Meteorologist Jon Rizzo says current wind speed probability data chances for hurricane-force winds (74+ mph) range from 14 percent in Ocean Reef to 5 percent in Key West.
There is a possibility that sustained tropical storm-force winds will affect all the Keys, with the greatest probability in the Upper Keys that currently stands at about 50 percent for winds of at least 39 mph. Tropical storm-force winds in the Upper Keys could begin early Sunday morning, Rizzo added.
While the NHC has not yet issued any watches or warning for Florida, they are expected beginning Friday. Monroe County Deputy Emergency Management Director Shannon Weiner said Thursday that Keys residents should begin making basic preparations, primarily because of the potential of Dorian striking the Florida peninsula resulting in an interruption of supplies and services.
Specific recommendations include, but are not limited to, procuring fuel, food, water and cash. Additional storm preparation information is at
www.monroecountyem.com
.
Currently, Weiner said, there are no evacuation directives planned for the Keys, but she urged all residents and visitors to closely monitor the future progress of Dorian. Keys county and municipal officials continue to meet via teleconference to coordinate any response activities that may be needed.
Another advisory is to be distributed Friday, or earlier if required.
