Dear Colleagues:

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, I have looked for the silver linings in this unexpected crisis. One experience that offered something new and positive is related to our "virtual" Convocation Ceremony that was held on June 20th.

This year's convocation event occurred much later than usual because of the pandemic, but that delay allowed us to gather more information about our graduates and their plans than we have ever had before. When I recently looked again at our convocation program, and I read about our graduating students and the places they are going to, I discovered some good news.

I was pleased and impressed to see the array of locations where our students plan to practice or get additional training. And I was glad to envision all the good they will do, no matter where they go. As I read through the program, I started seeing trends -- significant numbers of our dental hygiene and dental students who plan to stay in Ohio; others who are enrolling in a GPR or AEGD program; and many who are taking a specialty residency, as well as several who are joining the military.

This year, 87% of our dental hygiene graduates and 65% of our dental graduates stated that they will practice in Ohio. These statistics are critical indicators that we are accomplishing our mission of educating a dental workforce to provide care for Ohioans. For our dental graduates, 56% of them will practice general dentistry in Ohio or elsewhere. Another 27% will enroll in an AEGD/GPR program; and 15% will enroll in a specialty residency program. Last but not least, 8% of our students will join a branch of the Armed Forces, and some of those will be in an advanced education program. Of the 108 dental graduates in the Class of 2020, only three did not state where they expect to practice. And just two of the 31 dental hygiene graduates had plans that were undeclared.

Although this year's Convocation Ceremony was held "virtually," it offered me and everyone else who read the program a more complete picture of the knowledge and skills our students acquired in Postle Hall, and the places where they will use their education and expertise.

It is this kind of good news that makes each day a little more manageable and rewarding during this pandemic. I will keep looking for these silver linings as we continue making our way through -- and beyond -- these challenging times!

"Virtual" Convocation Celebrates Graduates of the Classes of 2020

The College of Dentistry held its first-ever "virtual" Convocation Ceremony on Saturday, June 20, to honor the dental hygiene and dental Classes of 2020 who completed their education in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Using a format that resembled the college's traditional convocation event, the "virtual" ceremony included pre-recorded messages by Dean Patrick Lloyd; Dr. Cesar Augustin, President of the Dental Alumni Society; and Ms. Rachel Kearney, Chair of the Division of Dental Hygiene. It also featured speeches by the presidents of the Classes of 2020, as well as recorded comments from dental and dental hygiene students.

Commenting on the "virtual" event, Dean Patrick Lloyd said, "This celebration was created to honor the hard work, the achievements, and the perseverance that our dental hygiene and dental students demonstrated as they finished their educational and clinical training during a once-in-a-century pandemic." He added, "In the two months prior to their graduation, the Classes of 2020 encountered situations that were undreamed of prior to COVID-19. By overcoming the many challenges that faced them, our newest group of graduates are even better prepared now for the careers that await them, and I look forward to hearing about their future success."
