Michigan Applies for Additional Unemployment Benefits
Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Administration today started the process to obtain an additional $300 per week benefit payment for unemployed workers. Under a Memorandum of Policy issued on 8/8/20 by President Donald J. Trump, states can apply for funding through the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) for supplemental unemployment payments.
Once approved by FEMA, an estimated 910,000 Michiganders will receive an additional $300 weekly benefit on top of their state unemployment benefit, retroactive to 8/1/20. The supplemental funding will continue until the established $25 billion in funding is exhausted, or until the week ending 12/6/20, whichever comes first.

State Representative Thomas Albert was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2016. He represents the 86th District, which makes up portions of Kent and Ionia counties. Albert was commissioned as a Marine Corps Officer where he was deployed to Iraq as an advisor to the Iraqi Army in the Anbar Province. After leaving active duty, he attained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Michigan State University and worked as an investor for the State of Michigan Retirement Systems.
