CIPS Congratulates Dr. Sue Whitesides on becoming a CIPS Fellow
CIPS congratulates Dr. Sue Whitesides, FCIPS on being awarded the distinction of CIPS ‘Fellow’ by the Society. ‘Fellow’ is the highest honour given to leaders within the IT community in Canada for outstanding contributions to the industry and CIPS.

Sue is known nationally and internationally as an educator and researcher. She served as the first woman Director, McGill School of Computer Science, and then as the first woman Chair, Dept of Computer Science, University of Victoria, retiring in December 2016. She continues to mentor grad students.

A Stanford graduate in Electrical Engineering, and a PhD in Mathematics, University of Wisconsin, Sue has created a network of colleagues around the world, advancing the design of algorithms for solving problems modelled by geometry and graphs. At UVic she led collaborations with MITACS, the Canadian organization that partners industry and government practitioners with university students and researchers, to advance research and foster innovation in Canada’s IT industry.

She served a 5-year term on the Association of Computing Machinery’s Award Committee, selecting the winner of the annual ACM Prize in Computing, a mid-career award of $250,000, second only to the ACM Turing Award, “Nobel Prize” of computer science.

IFIP/IP3 David O’Leary Award 2019 - Make a Nomination Today!
This award is named after CIPS member and former CIPS BC President, David O’Leary, who sadly passed last year

IFIP IP3 has named an award in David's memory and wants to acknowledge an individual or organisation that has promoted and demonstrated Professionalism (Professional Practice) in ICT, has worked as an Ethics Evangelist, and/or has made strides in fostering diversity among ICT practitioners.

The winner will receive a cash prize of 1,500 USD, and the individual or organisation’s representative will be funded to travel to IFIP’s General Assembly in Kiev, Ukraine on 12 October 2019, to receive the prize.

The closing date for entries is July 16 2019

CIPS Sends its Condolences to John Reid's
Family, Friends, Colleagues and the CATA Community
CIPS sends its condolences to John Reid's family, friends, colleagues and the CATA community and would like to thank John for his great contribution to Canada's IT Industry.


It is with great sadness we wish to announce the sudden death of John Scott Reid while vacationing in Norway. John was the long time President and CEO of the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Beloved husband for 30 years of Carol Beere, wonderful father to Kate and Andrew and adoring Grandpa to Zack, Matty, Jadyn, Valerie and Fiona.

Family and friends are invited to join us at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O'Connor) on Friday July 12th after 1 pm. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at 2 pm.
