Improving Social Determinants of Health: Getting Further Faster
Funder: NACCHO AND ASTHO
Informational Webinar: November 9 - 1 pm
Deadline: December 8
NACCHO and ASTHO have released a Request for Proposals to fund up to 50 communities at $50,000 each to evaluate their work to advance health equity by addressing social determinants of health (SDoH). The purpose of this funding opportunity is to identify and learn from multi-sector coalitions with a demonstrated history of addressing the SDoH outcomes. In order to build the evidence-base for collaborative approaches to SDoH, the project will evaluate and assess through technical support the impact of the coalitions’ recent SDoH experience and highlight successful strategies and interventions. Local, state, tribal, and territorial health departments are encouraged to apply.

NEW! Book Club for Health Educators
November 16
Host: NJ SOPHE
NJ SOPHE is starting a book club to engage with health educators. The group will be discussing Upstream by Dan Heath.

Most of us have heard the metaphor of saving people from drowning in a river vs. heading upstream to find out why they're falling in. This book addresses "upstream thinking" in public health as well as other domains.

"So often in life, we get stuck in a cycle of response. We put out fires. We deal with emergencies. We stay downstream, handling one problem after another, but we never make our way upstream to fix the systems that caused the problems. Cops chase robbers, doctors treat patients with chronic illnesses, and call-center reps address customer complaints. But many crimes, chronic illnesses, and customer complaints are preventable. So why do our efforts skew so heavily toward reaction rather than prevention?" Dan Heath

The State of Obesity 2020:
Better Policies for a Healthier America
November 19 - 12:30 pm ET
Host: Trust for America's Health
For the first time since data has been tracked, the U.S adult obesity rate passed 40 percent – 42.4 percent of U.S. adults have obesity. In 2020, these statistics take on new significance: recent studies have shown that people with obesity who get COVID-19 are more likely to be hospitalized and end up in intensive care than individuals without obesity. The report features a special section on the connection between food insecurity and obesity, an issue that has become especially relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Briefing speakers will cover the latest national obesity rates and trends, highlight promising approaches states and localities have undertaken to ensure healthy communities, and offer policy recommendations that incorporate innovative approaches that help all Americans lead healthier lives.
