Here's the latest information about things going on in the Borough of Pompton Lakes this month, assembled and produced by the Public Information Department.

As the school year begins a reminder to be alert and to slow down on roadways when children are present especially before and after school.
I would like to acknowledge and express my gratitude to all those involved with Pompton Day. Many hours and hard work went into planning the event. Thank you to the Recreation Commission, the numerous volunteers, Borough employees, businesses/vendors and those who attend Pompton Day to make the day a success. Pompton Day continues to grow and provides a fun filled community day for all beginning with the 5k run, street fair activities and ending with the spectacular fireworks display.
Once again, residents are invited to gather on the front lawn of the Municipal Building and along Lenox Avenue to take part in the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, 2019 beginning at 7:00pm. I would encourage you to attend as our community comes together in an effort to heal, embrace our country for its beauty and resilience to endure, and most importantly to never forget the heinous attack all Americans experienced on that fateful day.
As summer comes to an end and fall approaches the Pompton Lakes Annual River Cleanup Day has been scheduled for Sunday, September 29
th
, 11:00 am through 1:00pm at Hershfield Park. Volunteers are invited to return to the Park to enjoy refreshments and discuss the day’s events. The River Cleanup is organized and sponsored by the Environmental Commission in an effort to maintain a clean environment and improve the water quality of our streams and rivers as volunteers work together to provide a more suitable habitat for fish and wildlife.
In conclusion, I would like to remind residents to be mindful of the regulations for the collection of recyclables and solid waste trash.
All trash should be in containers with tight secure lids that have the capacity of no more than 45 gallons nor weigh more than 60 pounds.
The Department of Public Works will enforce the regulations and will notify residents with a decal sticker that indicates the reason their garbage or recycling was not picked up. Please refer to the Town Calendar for Recycling and Solid Waste Collection Regulations. If you have further questions please contact the DPW at 973-835-1465.

Pompton Lakes celebrates 15 years of Pompton Day!

The Borough of Pompton Lakes is hosting Pompton Day on September 1

year anniversary of Pompton Day. Pompton Day kicks off with the Fishing Derby from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Lakeside Avenue Park Dock. The event is for kids 16 years and younger. The celebration continues with the 15
th
annual running of the Pompton Lakes 5k. Participants may register same day from 7:45 a.m. - 8:45 a.m., or pre-register online at runsignup.com.
Pompton Day continues with live bands, DJ’s, great food, dunk tank, face painting, petting zoo, craft vendors, games, doggie dress up, and much more! You can also win big by playing the Pompton Day raffle. Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased by any Recreation Commissioner or Teen Center Staff Member. Tickets will also be sold at the Pompton Lakes Recreation and Teen Center Table at Lakeside Park and there will be raffles for sale by the kids zone and by Lakeside School. Trail Maintenance was the recipient of
Pompton Lakes Shade Tree Commission
’s extra trees from National Night Out. We had a small (and kind of short) but dedicated work crew this morning to reforest an area along the Morris Canal Greenway. The tower the kids are holding is the empty tree tubes. We didn’t count, but there were quite a few! Saplings were protected with tree protection tubes provided free of charge last year by our Watershed Ambassador. Thank you

The public is afforded the opportunity to seek government records maintained by public agencies governed by the State of New Jersey’s Open Public Records Act (NJSA 47:1A-1 et seq). Government records are defined under OPRA as any paper or digital format maintained in paper, electronically or recorded in the course of its official business.
The public is permitted to request government records to review, examine or copies of those public records that are not subject to exceptions from disclosure.
As Record Custodian, I am responsible for providing and managing requests for public records along with protecting a citizen’s personal information from disclosure. To obtain a public document an OPRA must be filed with the Municipal Clerk and the requester should include a detailed description and identify the record/document they are seeking.
Upon receipt of the request, a response must be made within seven business days that includes the documents requested unless an extension of time is required to retrieve the records. A fee, if applicable, may be assessed as to the costs associated with duplicating the records requested.

Garbage Pickup Notice:
Attention Pompton Lakes Residents: Our goal is to keep our town clean and running smoothly. Residents cooperation is paramount to achieving this goal.
In an effort to increase efficiency and transparency, we will be using decals to communicate with residents whose waste has not been picked up as scheduled due to an ordinance violation.
We understand that it can be disconcerting to come home and see that your garbage or recycling has not been picked up as you had expected, and we want to work with all residents to ensure that future collections are completed as scheduled while ensuring the safety of our hardworking DPW employees.

Recycling Center
The Borough Recycling Center is located on Grove Street and is open to all Borough Residents and Businesses. Residents and Businesses must display on their mirror or show the attendant a valid Borough decal or I.D. upon entering the Center. The Center is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
The Recycling Center offers biodegradable lawn and leaf bags at a cost of $.35 cents per bag. The following materials are accepted at the Recycling Center:
- Grass Clippings
- Leaves, Brush & Tree Limbs (max length 8 ft; max diameter 2 inch)
- Co-mingled Glass, Plastic & Metal Recyclables
- Aluminum cans - must be separated from other co-mingled recyclables
- Paper & Cardboard Recyclables
- Corrugated Cardboard – must be separated from other paper recyclables
- Electronic Equipment & Computers
- Metals
- Waste Engine Oil
- Car Batteries
Tires may be brought to the Recycling Center at a cost of $2.50 per tire without the rim and $5.00 per tire with rim. Propane tanks are not accepted at the Recycling Center.
LEAVING MATERIALS AT THE RECYCLING CENTER GATE WHEN THE CENTER IS CLOSED IS CONSIDERED ILLEGAL DUMPING AND PUNISHABLE BY FINES AND/OR IMPRISONMENT.
VEGETATIVE WASTE PICKUP NOTICE:

Mr. Pereny is an accomplished writer, musician and educator for over the past 40 years. He has taught English at all levels from grammar school to college. Since the age of sixteen, he has written and performed his poems and songs all over the metro area. Over the years he has been published more than 200 times in anthologies, magazines and newspapers. His writings include two published books, several volumes of poetry, and other works. He was a founding editor of the literary/art magazine Lunch in 1975 and in 1977 Mr. Pereny founded Footwork which evolved into the Paterson Literary Review. Then in 1980 Mr. Pereny was editor of The Local Paper in Pompton Lakes.
The Pompton Poets is looking for new members to share their love of poetry. All are welcome to join and meet others, from first time poets to published writers and everything in between.

The Dey Mansion is hosting an encampment in commemoration of General George Washington's visit to the Preakness Valley on Saturday, October 26th and Sunday, October 27th from 11:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.

Come and learn what life was like as a soldier during the American Revolution. Watch soldiers cleaning their muskets while women prepare meals. Some officers may be drilling with their men while others plan for battle or play cards. Special appearances will be made by New Jersey’s local militia. The day will be filled with 18th century games, music, demonstrations and crafters.
Self-guided tours of the Mansion will be offered, admission into the Mansion will be $5.00 per person, children, 11 years of age and under are free. Parking and outdoor activities are free to the public.
The Dey Mansion is an excellent example of Georgian architecture of the mid eighteenth century, which served as Washington’s Headquarters in July, October and November of 1780. Today, the Dey Mansion is owned by Passaic County and operated by the Department of Cultural and Historic Affairs. The Dey Mansion is open to the public for tours and programs. First Responders Flash Briefing

Pompton Lakes Police Officers will be participating in a nationwide initiative known as, "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over." The message is simple. Don't drive drunk and don't let your friends drive drunk. There's always an alternative.
As a community we all support law enforcement efforts to protect us from theft, burglary, assault and terrorism. Yet, many otherwise law-biding citizens continue to view impaired driving merely as a traffic offense. Don't be fooled. Impaired driving is no accident nor is it a victimless crime.
Impaired driving is one of the most often committed crimes, randomly killing someone in America every 48 minutes and nearly 30 people a day. That means you, your family or friends are just as likely to be innocent victims. Nationally, impaired driving fatalities are on the rise. Almost 11,000 people are killed each year. More than 300,000 people are injured.
In 2016, there were 137 alcohol-impaired fatalities in New Jersey, which accounted for nearly 23 percent of the state’s motor vehicle-related deaths.
In 2016, an estimated 11.8 million people nationwide reported driving under the influence of illicit drugs during the year prior to being surveyed. In 2017, 10,874 people nationwide were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes related to alcohol. These alcohol impaired-driving fatalities accounted for 29 percent of the total motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States. In 2017, U.S. traffic fatalities in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes decreased by 1.1 percent from 10,996 in 2016 to 10,874.
Every year more than 1 million impaired drivers are arrested in the United States. However, for every one arrest, hundreds of other impaired drivers are not apprehended, putting all roadway users at risk. Repeat offenders account for a high number of alcohol-related crashes.
We have come to a crossroads in our efforts to prevent this deadly crime. America is at a crucial point where we must all do more as communities and as individuals if we are to make significant declines in the number of alcohol- and drug-related crashes.
The key to reversing this alarming trend is taking a systematic approach with law enforcement, prosecutors, judicial officials, traffic safety partners and individuals each doing their part, to protect innocent victims from impaired drivers.
Tips:
- Don't risk it. If you plan to drive, don't drink.
- Choose a sober designated driver before partying.
- Take mass transit, a taxicab or ask a friend to drive you home if you didn't plan in advance.
- Spend the night where the activity is being held.
- Report impaired drivers to law enforcement.
Too many people still don't understand that alcohol, drugs and driving don't mix. If you find it hard to figure out if you've had too many drinks to drive - don't risk it.
If you're feeling "buzzed' you are most likely impaired. And if you drive impaired, law enforcement will arrest you.
There will be no warnings. Our message is simple -- Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over violators can lose their licenses, time from their jobs, and lose money in high fines and court costs as well as face imprisonment for repeat offenses, assault and vehicular manslaughter.

Community ShareCam Program

Community Share Cam is a community safety program instituted by the Pompton Lakes Police Department which allows both residents and businesses to partner with the PLPD in the fight against crime throughout the Borough. Simply by registering YOUR home or business surveillance system with the Pompton Lakes Police, YOU can be an invaluable asset in solving crimes in your neighborhood.

When a crime occurs in your neighborhood, the Pompton Lakes Police will call on YOU and request a copy of YOUR video footage. This footage will help establish leads, identify suspects and save valuable investigative time. All registered camera locations are stored in a secure database and are entered into our Records Management System allowing the PLPD to map out locations of cameras throughout the Borough. Community ShareCam DOES NOT provide the Pompton Lakes Police with direct access to YOUR surveillance system. Residents and businesses will only be contacted by the PLPD in the event of a crime occurring in the area of your camera coverage.

Your House Number Visible and Displayed Correctly????
Think of this scenario, there's an emergency at your house. You dial 911 and speak to the dispatcher. However, it seems like it's taking a long time for help to arrive.
Meanwhile, Fire and police have arrived on your street but they're having problems finding your house.The house doesn't have any easily identifiable numbers on it and the mailbox is blocked by trees
Seconds Count in an Emergency:
- Protect your family and your property by having large visible house numbers.
- Firefighters, police officers, and EMT's find you faster when your home is properly marked.
- A visitor, child or injured person may be unable to give clear directions.
- Emergency personnel from a neighboring community may be unfamiliar with your area. Use Large Visible Numbers
- Numbers need to be at least 4-inches in height and facing the street.
Put the numbers under lighting, and use numbers with a contrasting background, so they will be visible at night.
If your driveway is long, post your house number on both sides of a mailbox or sign pole at the end of the driveway near the road.
• Be sure to keep numbers visible by trimming trees and bushes.
