Mississippi's ABFM Past Chairs
|
Two legendary family physicians from Mississippi, together again! Dr. Diane Beebe and Dr. Joe Johnston are the only two Mississippi family physicians to have served as Chair of the American Board of Family Medicine. Both were in Lexington, KY, October 4 for the ABFM's 50th Anniversary Celebration. Dr. Beebe reports to us that Dr. Johnston is "her hero."

FamDocPAC:
Have You Contributed This Year?
Election Day is November 5 and all statewide and legislative offices will be determined.
The MAFP is a strong voice at the Capitol, and we need to elect strong legislators who understand the needs of our patients and family physicians throughout Mississippi. Please contribute to our FamDocPAC.
FamDocPAC is a political action committee founded by the MAFP to promote the effective citizenship of FamDocPAC members and associate members through the financial participation in the electoral process of the State of Mississippi, and to assist in the nomination and election of candidates for the Mississippi House of Representatives, the Mississippi Senate and other Mississippi Statewide Elected Offices.
The PAC accepts voluntary personal or corporate contributions from FAM DOC PAC members and associate members, or friends of those members.

Task Force Releases Health Report
Following nine rural hospital bankruptcies since 2010, the
Mississippi Rural Health Task Force Report was released last week to the Mississippi Legislature with recommendations on policy changes to avoid the closure of rural hospitals in the state.
One of the task force's recommendations to the Mississippi Legislature that specifically affects primary care was to increase the amount of scholarship monies for the MS Rural Physicians Scholarship Program and to work with Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce to increase the number of rural residency programs in the state.
The report noted that of Mississippi's population of 2.9 million people, about 65-67% of Mississippians are insured, compared to 91% of Americans. A recent study stated that 48% of Mississippi's 64 rural hospitals are at "high financial risk."
