Tweed New Haven Airport wins lawsuit on runway expansion
A federal appeals court has ruled in favor of Tweed New Haven Regional Airport in its longstanding lawsuit seeking to strike down the state statute limiting Tweed's main runway length to 5,600 feet, Tweed's attorney said Tuesday.
The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals, in a unanimous opinion, "ruled that the state statute" limiting the length of the runway "is preempted by federal law, and is therefore invalid," said Hugh Manke, attorney for the Tweed New Haven Airport Authority.
The ruling "confirms that within the boundaries of an airport that is providing commercial service, the FAA regulations are paramount and they preempt any state statute that conflicts with them," said Manke, who received the decision Tuesday morning.
The ruling, assuming the state does not appeal it to the U.S. Supreme Court, clears the way for Tweed to pave portions of its existing, unpaved runway safety areas to increase the effective length of the runway for takeoff.
It also will make Tweed a more attractive airport to attract additional air service, Tweed supporters said.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao Announces $2.5 Million in Infrastructure Grants to Airports in Connecticut - $450,000 to update Tweed Master Plan
U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao today announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will award $495 million in airport infrastructure grants, the second allotment of the total $3.18 billion in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding for airports across the United States.
"This significant investment in airport improvements in Connecticut will fund construction and rehabilitation projects that will help maintain high levels of safety in U.S. aviation," said U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.
Grant awards include:
Groton-New London Airport in Groton, CT, $1.1 million - grant funds will be used to install perimeter fencing around the airport.
Meriden Markham Municipal Airport in Meriden, CT, $450,000 - grant funds will be used to rehabilitate the airport's apron.
Tweed-New Haven Airport in New Haven, CT, $450,000 - grant fund will be used to update the Airport Master Plan.
Waterbury-Oxford Airport in Oxford, CT, $386,000 - grant fund will be used to update the Airport Master Plan.
Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT $130,000 - grant funds will be used to conduct miscellaneous studies.

City Links New Haveners To New Amazon Jobs
Hundreds of potential jobs are awaiting New Haveners - and the city has arranged to help people both get them and get to them.
A total of 1,800 estimated jobs in all are being created at a new 1.2 million square-foot "fulfillment center" Amazon is opening on Washington Avenue (Route 5) in North Haven.
Mayor Toni Harp said she'd like to see as many New Haven people as possible get those jobs. So her administration has arranged with Amazon to hold a job fair at City Hall all day on July 30.
"Everybody who needs a job should come. I understand they're hiring on the spot," Harp said during her most recent appearance on WNHH FM's "Mayor Monday" program.
Of course, getting to suburban jobs can be tricky for car-less New Haveners because of CT Transit's outdated schedules and routes for its buses. Harp announced news on that front: last week the city won a sign-off from CT Transit to adjust schedules to make it easier for New Haveners to travel to and from shifts at the new fulfillment center. CT Transit is also adding express routes to the plant, Harp said.
