There was once a little girl whose name was Emily. She was a bright three-year-old girl: always inquisitive, always asking questions, as many young ones do. One night her mother put her to bed but, of course, Emily had 1000 questions, prolonging the time before she would have to fall asleep. Finally her mother tucked her in and said good night. After a short time, from the bedroom came a pitiful little cry, “mommy”. Emily’s mother got up and went into her room. She did the usual rounds: a glass of water, plugging in the night light, and listening to her concern that there was something in the closet.

In a few more moments, her mother said that it was time for bed and left.  Once more, it wasn’t too long before the cry came again. This time Emily was frightened by the distant sound of thunder. Emily‘s mother assured her that God was nearby and God would protect her.  God wouldn’t let anything happen to her! “God is right here,” her mother told her.

“Oh, I know he’s here, mommy, I just wish he had skin on.”

Emily wants what we all do: a God we can see and touch: a God who is near. But we have to learn what the disciples learned on the road to Emmaus. It would take the disciples time to see their God had skin on and was walking with them. We say we are the body of Christ. That is more than just a nice thought.

God is with us, God is among us, and God is here within us. What a joy to know the promise of resurrection is a God who never leaves, but is always near: in the words of one another, in the kindness of each other, and in the compassion for the other. We really do have a God with skin on! We only have to do what the disciples did on that road: look around and see the Lord who is taking care of us no matter where we journey. There is no fear when we recognize how God is so near: a God with skin on!
