On Sunday, September 1, Rev. Bill Johnson will be our guest preacher and presiding minister, while Pastor Graf is out of town. Pastor Ellen Dozier (828-403-3988) will provide pastoral care in his absence, through Monday, September 2.

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES BEGIN SEPTEMBER 8!
Beginning on September 8, four classes will meet each week.
During the Sunday school time, child care will be available for children five and younger in the nursery.
Elementary School Children
This group will begin with music in the choir room at 9:10 a.m. This year, the Godly Play approach will be used in this class, and Heather Merritt will give an overview of it on
September 8.
Confirmation Class
This class, led by Jackie Jenkins, will begin looking at the 10 Commandments.
DiGG Class
For four Sundays,
September 8-29, Bill Moore will lead the group (Delving into God's Goodness adult class) in a study dear to his heart that he is calling "The Power of Paradox to tell the Good News." Great Christian writings have used the phrasing of paradoxes to express some central understandings of our tradition, in and outside Scripture. One particular form of writing in paradoxes has been the English sonnet, including some of the most powerful Christian sonnets over several centuries.
In the
first session, we will try to remember the best-known expressions of Christian thought that have been phrased as paradoxes and discuss how they may have affected us.
In the second session on
September 15, Bill will analyze how their paradoxes work in some extremely thoughtful and intensely felt sonnets.
In the third session on
September 22, we will share our own reading experiences with a set of further sonnets that Bill will provide for reading after September 15.
In the fourth session on September 29, we will probe the question, "Why is paradoxical expression important to Christianity?"
The Intersections Class welcomes high school youth who have been confirmed and adults to talk about a variety of topics that connect faith and life. On
September 8, we will look at plans for the year and use an interactive activity entitled "Spirit Nudges and Heart Tugs." On
September 15, the class will begin a study of the book
8 Habits of Love: Overcome Fear and Transform Your Life.

WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY ON SEPTEMBER 10
Genesis 1-2:4 God speaks a good creation into being.
Humans are created "in God's image."
Mark 12:13-17 Jesus said, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's
and give to God what belongs to God."
Psalm 24:1 The earth is the LORD's and all that is in it;
the world and those who live in it.
Join us to investigate and discuss the wonder and goodness of God's speech and what it means to be created in God's image. Come at
10:30 a.m. for fellowship and sharing. The Bible study will run from 11:00 a.m. to noon.

LIVING COMPASS SMALL GROUP
Good Shepherd's Reimagining Health Collaborative team will offer a small group to friends and members of Good Shepherd
beginning on Tuesday, October 1. The group will focus on wellness that encompasses the whole person and will meet for six consecutive weeks, ending on November 5. The group is scheduled from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., but the time will be adjusted, if needed.
What is Living Compass?
As we seek God's holy intention for us-wholeness of heart, soul, strength, and mind-we discover God's presence in our life's journey. Life is a journey, and like any journey, it requires intentional preparation. Living Compass is a program that creates the opportunity for people to pause and check their bearings, to figure out "where they are" and "where they are headed," and then to adjust their course as necessary.
The Living Compass curriculum is based on these core beliefs:
- The fruits of wellness and wholeness emerge from the seeds of faith in our lives.
- Each of us is responsible for the decisions we make to nurture our own wellness/wholeness.
- Wellness must encompass the whole person (heart, soul, strength, and mind).
- Individual wellness does not exist in isolation but is connected to ALL our relationships.

Three persons are needed to be part of the nominating committee which will come up with a slate of candidates for church council in 2020. FINANCIAL POLICIES & PROCEDURES REVISION
The Congregation Council recently approved a revision to the Financial Policies & Procedures intended to clarify the requirements for access to confidential giving/pledging information. The revision is now available on the LCGS web site and can be accessed here. The approved changes to the procedure, which is effective September 1, are marked with a vertical bar in the left margin. Questions may be directed to Finance Committee Chair Hal Galloway.

Hermine Mood, sister of Frances Beck, is overwhelmed and exhausted after two recent falls and other health issues.
Nora Johnson has been moved to Accordius Health (formerly the Brian Center) at 155 N. Country Club Road in Brevard for follow-up care after having surgery on August 18. She is in room 119 and would welcome cards, visits, or phone calls. Nora's cell phone number is 828-384-9062.
Iann Russell, son of Pastor Jack and Lisa Russell of Living Waters Lutheran Church in Cherokee recently saw an
autoimmune specialist, who determined that Iann's digestive system had basically "shutdown." He is now closely monitoring what foods he eats and will return to this specialist in a month.

SNACKS FOR GETTING AHEAD CLASSES
This week, Sharing House began offering another 15-week Getting Ahead series,
which is designed to help people imagine and create a more stable financial future for
themselves and their children. The class is comprised of 17 people (15 participants and two leaders), and meets on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Brevard Wesleyan Church.
Sharing House needs help providing snacks and drinks for the class
(i.e.
breakfast or lunch foods such as casseroles, fruit, coffee cake, sandwich trays, cheese and crackers, soups and
salads, chips and dip, brownies, cookies, etc.).
Sharing House will supply the paper goods and utensils.
If you'd like to help, please sign up on the bulletin board or contact Outreach Ministry Coordinator Kimberly Dunbar ([email protected]). Deliver the snacks around 9:45 a.m. to Brevard Wesleyan Church on the scheduled day
(enter the second door down in the parking lot and go up a few stairs into the

Do These Classes Make a Difference?
You may have wondered what difference these Getting Ahead classes actually can make in someone's life. Many of the participants of the journaling and discussion small group that Kimberly has been offering at Sharing House are Getting Ahead graduates, and they've mentioned how helpful the Getting Ahead series was for them and how they appreciated the snacks. Providing refreshments may not seem like a worthwhile thing to do, but it is a meaningful and tangible way to accompany others.

COLLECTION FOR CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES
Thank you to everyone who donated supplies over the past few weeks for our local Child Protective Services Unit. Eight boxes of items (toiletries, socks, underwear, books, toys, and art supplies) were delivered on Friday, August 30. The items are greatly appreciated and the social workers are looking forward to distributing them as needed. Thank you for accompanying others in our community in a tangible way!!

FINAL THOUGHTS FROM A SENEGAL YAGM
Here is a last email and newsletter from one of the Young Adults in Global Mission who served under Pastor Kristin Engstrom in Senegal this past year. She has now been back home in the States for a few weeks and shares a little about how she is adjusting.
Thank you so much for your patience with my very late last newsletter. It has been a bit more difficult to find my final words about my YAGM experience. I hope you all enjoy! I could not have done it without all the love and support you all have given me over the past year! I appreciate it more than I can ever express!

TRH TO HOST OPIOID TAKE BACK DAY ON SEPTEMBER 7
On
Saturday, September 7, Transylvania Regional Hospital will be one of 65 medical facilities in 14 states that will participate in the first national "Crush the Crisis" opioid take back day. Unused or expired opioids (tablets, capsules, and patches) can be dropped off anonymously at the main entrance of TRH between 9:00 a.m. and noon. The collected medications will be properly disposed of by the Brevard Police Department. Thank you for helping to make our community safer for everyone.

STEP WNC
STEP WNC is a new non-profit organization founded by Rivers and Carolyn Smith. The mission of STEP (Serving Together Empowers People) is to provide free basic home repairs for low income, elderly and/or disabled homeowners in Transylvania, Henderson and Jackson Counties, and to collect and distribute firewood for home heat. Since it is a new organization, STEP is looking for volunteers to help run the day-to-day operations as well as serve on work projects. OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMMUNITY WALK
On
Sunday, October 6, the Asheville chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will host a community walk to bring awareness to the growing issue of suicide in our society and to raise funds to support research, educational programs and survivors of suicide loss. The walk will take place in Asheville's Carrier Park beginning at 1:00 p.m. Outreach Ministry Coordinator Kimberly Dunbar will participate in the walk. Please contact her if you'd like to attend (

INSTALLATION OF PASTOR MARY AT LTSS
All are invited to the installation of The Reverend Dr. Mary Hinkle Shore
as Rector and Dean of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary of Lenoir-Rhyne University on Tuesday, September 10 at 10:30 a.m. in Christ Chapel in Columbia, SC.
The Rev. Dr. Herman Yoos will preside at the rite of installation, the Rev. Kevin Strickland will preside at the Eucharist, and the Rev. Dr. Mark Fitzsimmons will preach. The day's events also include a luncheon after worship and a lecture from Shore at 1:00 p.m. titled, "Christ Is Risen: Proclaiming the Gospel in a Culture of Fear."

"FAITH, LOVE, JOY, AND HELPING OTHERS"
Here is a story of ministry taking place within the NC Synod.
Both Hurricane Matthew in October 2016 and Hurricane Florence in September 2018 flooded Cathy Farmer's home in Princeville, N.C. (the first African American incorporated town in the U.S.), forcing Cathy, her terminally ill daughter, and two grandchildren out of her home. During Hurricane Matthew, the four were rescued from the flood waters. Since then, Cathy and her family have been mobile, staying with friends and family members. Cathy's daughter recently passed away.
