An Invitation to Mental Health Professionals
A Thought Provoking Series
∙Open Discussions
∙Approachable, non-judgmental, interactive

Open House and Conversation:
Before and After the Session
Most of a therapist’s professional time is spent engaging with clients and focusing on clinical material that comes to light during sessions. However, there is less examination about what clinically transpires for therapists outside sessions. In the same way that therapists are trained to tune into the gaps and spaces in between their clients’ words, therapists can benefit from being attuned to their own clinical process that occurs in the gaps and spaces beyond sessions. These periods of time account for a range of conscious as well as unconscious determinations that can impact the treatment process. This Conversation will utilize a psychoanalytic perspective to discuss various elements of clinical practice that may be considered before, after and outside session time with our clients.

Course Objectives:
Participants in this course will learn the following skills:
  1. Participants will learn to utilize self and boundary determinations outside sessions in the service of the therapy.
  2. Participants will learn to analyze the clinical implications of recording sessions, reviewing progress notes/texts/emails and maintaining client contact between appointments.
  3. Participants will learn to differentiate between therapist countertransference and therapist resistance outside sessions and how these differentiations can instruct clinical work in sessions.
