August 31, 2019

Friends and Neighbors,

Over the last many days, we have been preparing for the worst and hoping for the best and it appears as though we will escape  Hurricane Dorian .

We are happy to report that as of the 11 am update, South Florida is no longer within the cone of uncertainty. Dorian  is still expected to slow down its forward motion and may impact the Bahamas tonight through Sunday. The 11 am hurricane track shows it moving northeast near the coast of Florida as of Tuesday morning.

That said, everyone should still exercise caution.  Even though it appears as though Miami and South Dade have dodged a direct hit, there is still a potential for storm force winds in parts of Florida and large swells are expected along the coast. In addition, the highest tides of the year, "king tides", are expected this weekend. Regardless of the track, Dorian is a dangerous hurricane and doesn't have to make landfall in an area to produce impact.

Rest assured that our Village Emergency Response Team under the supervision of the Village Manager, Ed Silva, is still on alert and, along with your Council, they will be on hand to assess any issues or changes in the storm patterns. Our Police Department also stands ready to assist.

I encourage you to stay updated with storm status through media sources and on Village of Palmetto Bay's  Facebook  and  Twitter  where we will continue to post more information as it becomes available. I will also post regular updates on my Facebook and Twitter pages and will continue to keep you informed until the storm passes.

Below are the updates on the status of Village services:

  • We are continuing to clean out drains throughout the Village

  • Village Hall will be closed on Monday for the Labor Day Holiday; but will be open for regular hours on Tuesday.

  • Parks will reopen tomorrow, Sunday.

  • Freebee service will be up and running as of Tuesday. Our I-Bus service will also resume on Tuesday.

  • All Village operations will resume on Tuesday. A new date will soon be announced for the final budget workshop.

We are asking residents to refrain from trimming trees at this time, as we may still be impacted by heavy winds. We also encourage residents to download the County app "Ready MDC" for the remainder of the hurricane season, available on Apple or Google Play . Remember that evacuation orders and sheltering information are issued by Miami-Dade County and the app will provide you with immediate notifications about the storm.

As always, I am here to assist you in answering your questions or lending a helping hand.

Sincerely,
Karyn Cunningham
Mayor of Palmetto Bay
