SCC Weekly Newsletter: Sept. 2 - 8, 2019
REMINDER : NO SCHOOL This Monday, Sept. 2
Director's Spotlight On... Working as a Team
Each of us – learners, parents, and staff – works together to create the kind of learning environment and community culture that is aligned to our core values ( Be kind, Be a contributor, Be accountable ). This partnership is a foundational element of our school community. All members of this community have roles and responsibilities that are essential in supporting learner academic, social, and emotional growth.

Parents gave feedback last year that they wanted to better understand how the roles and responsibilities shift over time across the different grade levels. To address that request for guidance, educators are working together to craft grade-specific Roles and Responsibilities for Learners, Parents, and Staff.

Our roles and responsibilities shift as the learners get older, but the basic components remain consistent over their nine-year journey at SCC. The five components we have identified are:

  • Supporting learning
  • Encouraging independence, self-advocacy, and sense of self efficacy
  • Communication
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Engagement in community

These grade-specific documents will be handed out at Back-to-School Night (see below).

Back-to-School Nights: This is a time for families to get information about their child’s classroom program from the educator(s). We separate the nights to help accommodate parents with children in different grades. Educators share their educational philosophy, academic expectations, curriculum, routines, and parental involvement opportunities. This is really about the classroom and no school-wide talks are given on this night. This is an appropriate time for general questions but not for individual conferencing about concerns for your child. This is an *adults-only* time (infants, of course, are an exception); childcare is available on-site through Educare.

Please block out the dates below for the BTSN that is relevant for your family:
  • K – 4th grades: Tues, Sept. 10, 2019, 6:30–8:00pm
  • 5th – 8th grades: Thurs, Sept. 12, 2019, 6:30–8:00pm

Board of Directors Update
Akash Bijlani , on behalf of the BOD
Dear SCC Community,

Olin Palmer, who has been on the Board of Directors (BOD) as a parent member for the past 4 years, announced that he is stepping down from the BOD. We would like to thank Olin for his dedication and service.

Section 4.6.2 of the SCC Bylaws indicates an election must be held if there is a vacancy for the parent community member position that occurs prior to December. Therefore, the BOD will be holding an election for the vacated parent community member position. Below are details regarding the election process and timing:

  • Any candidate willing to be considered should submit a one-page statement describing their background, views, strengths, and reasons for running for the position.
  • Candidate statements must be printed out and turned into the SCC Main Office no later than 9 am PT on Friday, September 6.
  • If there is only one candidate who submits a statement, this person will automatically be elected to serve out the remaining period of the current position, which is until June 30, 2020.

Further steps are noted here. More information will be made available directly to the community via the Community email distribution lists and the Newsletter.
PRT Update
Welcome Breakfast
Please join us in connecting with old friends and meeting new community members.
Date: Friday, September 6th
Time: 8:15 - 9:30am
Location: SCC Plaza (Outside the Community Hall)

We should be (mostly) set up by 8:00am and want to balance a schedule that will not disrupt drop-off while also allowing those on their way to work to join us for a while. Please park offsite and walk in with your learner, or drop off your learner at the curb, park off-campus, and then walk in.  Please help ensure our staff/educators can park on campus by parking off site. We will have coffee and goodies set out.

While your young ones who are not yet SCC learners are welcome, we respectfully ask that no school-age children eat breakfast with us. We will not have enough food to feed ALL of the learners and the parents. This breakfast is for parents to connect and reconnect!

PTA Coordinating Council
Caroline Conway , PTACC Representative
SCC participates along with the other San Carlos elementary and middle schools in an organization called the PTA Coordinating Council. Each school has a representative on the council -- for the other schools it's a member of their PTA, and for Charter it's a representative from our Parent Resource Team. The idea is that all of the schools can benefit from sharing ideas, challenges, and successes. The council also collaborates on parent ed throughout the District and, on occasion, speaks out as a unit to hopefully influence decisions made by the San Carlos School Board and the District Superintendent.

The PTACC holds a meeting the first Wednesday of every month from 9-10AM at the District offices (1200 Industrial Road) that is open to the general public, and everyone is encouraged to attend. The principals (and our Director, Stacy) generally attend these meetings, as well as the Superintendent and a representative from the School Board. On months when PTACC is taking up topics that might be of interest to Charter families, our PRT PTACC representatives, Caroline Conway and Katherine Sherman, will try to include a heads up in the school newsletter.

On that note, the next meeting is Wednesday, September 4th at 9 AM. We hope to see you there!
Dancing Under the Stars
We survived the first week of school, open house, traffic, lunches and even a PRT meeting. Now, time for a Party! Parent Education
Lorea Martinez , Parent Ed Liaison
"Parenting is like trying to stand up in a hammock and not spill your lemonade,” says Dr. Anabel Jensen, Six Seconds founder. Can you relate? In this article, she explains how to use emotional intelligence to change the way you approach conflict with your kids.

We have planned an exciting lineup of parent education events at CLC this year! Look for an invitation to attend a workshop on children and anxiety in October, and our first Parenting Book Club on November 14th. If you want to get started, we’ll be reading Whole-Hearted Parenting by Joshua Freedman.

Coming up this week, you can learn about mindsets (Wed), and solving behavior problems (Thurs). Also, Brittan Acres is hosting several Girls Leadership workshops in September, so check out the details here. For other parent education events, click on the button below. Happy Parenting!
Hot Lunch Information
Akash Bijlani , Hot Lunch Coordinator
ChoiceLunch has a new pizza vendor - NY Pizza! The feedback so far has been great - so give it a try! Also, don’t forget - Jamba Juice starts on Thursday, September 5 and will be available as an add-on on Tuesdays and Thursday! We do need to get our volumes up as they’ve been a bit low the past week, so give ChoiceLunch a chance and check out the new menu items as well!

SCEF Update
The families of San Carlos helped SCEF go over the $2.5 million goal last school year and SCC was granted an additional $25,000, making it a total of approximately $275,000 for THIS school year. WELL DONE!

Recurring Gifts
Would you like to spread your contributions to SCEF throughout the year? Please consider signing up for recurring monthly donations. A $1,500 donation can be given as a $125 gift each month. Sign up for SCEF’s recurring gift program at SCEFKids/Donate.

Corporate Matching - Double Your Donation
Many Bay Area businesses encourage employees to give back to their communities by offering corporate matching programs for non-profit donations. Remember to ask your employer about donation-matching and double or triple giving months! Google, Genentech, Gilead and other major corporations will match your cash donation to SCEF. In September, Wells Fargo employees can secure a match for their donations. Not sure if your workplace offers matching?
