Size Matters!

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This week's BobBlast is the second in the series of Contrasts. The last BobBlast discussed warm and cool… this week's features Big and Little. I will show you in a collage demo how contrast in size works for me.

So, we can use the size of an area to emphasize drama, distance or focal point. Size can also illustrate movement in the painting, from large to small. All these sizes convey a rhythm in painting - speeding up or slowing down like the pattern of musical notes.

This BobBlast demo is a collage diptych - two full sheets of Kilimanjaro watercolor paper taped together. I begin with the largest shape, then add the smallest shapes, which ends up being the focal point. I then build up the flow and the rhythm to illustrate my title , “Migration”. The collage is aluminum foil, black and white collage paper and gel medium as my adhesive. Think David and Goliath, then exaggerate that!

As always, these BobBlasts are a short summary of how I paint and are not intended to suggest a formula for painting. Every painter develops their own way of painting. And mine works for me. Start loose, continue loose.
