Fall Moon Rising
Free for all ages
No registration required!
During a full moon in October, mystical powers are revealed in many ways, so be on the lookout for live scarecrows, werewolves and more!
Take a wagon ride to help collect all the pieces from the broken moon so it can rise again. We will explore
full moon folklore, stories and creepy critters galore!
At the shelters - play games, create crafts, enjoy fun activities and
meet live animals.
Come as you are or wear a kid-friendly costume.
Tickets for the Fall Moon Rising wagon ride are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis only at the event. Distribution times are 12:30 pm and 3 pm.

Exploring Habitats at Harris Lake County Park
Monday, Sept. 2; 10 - 11 am
Free for all ages
Come out to enjoy the park and explore different habitats on a leisurely hike. We will stop by our meadow, a pond, the lake and the forest to investigate which animals live in each and learn the four survival needs of all living things.
Meet at the platform in the Educational Garden
Geocaching 101 at the American Tobacco Trail
Sunday, Sept. 8;
1:30-3 pm
Free for ages 6 and up
Geocaching is a treasure hunt where participants use GPS coordinates to track down hidden "caches." We will learn how to use traditional GPS units and the Geocaching App (by Groundspeak) and then hike to find real geocaches hidden along the trail.

Monday, Sept. 9; 11 am - noon
Free for ages 1-6 with an adult
There is still time to see butterflies in the fall including our mighty Monarch. Learn how different butterflies survive the winter and
hopefully see the Monarch adult or a caterpillar.
Make your own Monarch to take home.

This program developed by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences occurs annually the week of September 24-30. The goal of TACO week is to get children outdoors to discover the natural world around them,
help them to understand and appreciate the environment in which they live and to have fun exploring nature!
We celebrate this week by providing special programs:
Marvelous Migration at HLCP
Wednesday, Sept. 25;
2 - 3 p.m.
Free for all ages
Learn about the annual, long-distance movement of the migratory birds in our park. We will learn the difference between summer migrants, winter migrants, and permanent residents and then go on a hike around the park to look for our feathered friends.

Get to Know Hawks, Eagles and Owls at HLCP
Sunday, Sept. 29; 2 - 3:30 pm
For all ages
North Carolina is home to many different kinds of birds of prey, also called raptors (eagles, hawks, owls and falcons). Learn about some of the most common ones seen from the park, meet a few up close with our taxidermy mounts and take a short hike to look and listen for them.

All About Beavers on the ATT
Monday, Sept. 30;
11 am - 12:30 pm
For all ages
Beavers are such busy creatures and have many unique features
that allow them to survive in their aquatic world. Learn about their
special adaptations through our "Build a Beaver" program then hike
to the Beaver Creek bridge to look for evidence of these industrious
and amazing mammals.

On August 29, Park staff along with NC Forest Service and Duke Energy successfully burned 7 acres in the
Longleaf Management area at
Harris Lake County Park. Prescribed burns are important to
the health of the Longleaf ecosystem as it opens up space for the longleaf and important under-story species and
destroys invasive plants.
