Nearly bocced up: Mr. B was bocce balling it against Pinstripes’ catering goddess Lisa Hasbach during a Leads Group event recently. Every time it was her time to roll, Mr. B went to his roll-a-dex and had her paged: “Catering call on 2. Catering call on 4.”  Mysteriously, Lisa kept missing her turn. Miraculously, Mr. B was able to win and earn a lunch catering presentation for up to 10 people . Yay, because Pinstripes caters BACON! And the mini chocolate chip scones are to die for. Mr. B doesn’t have 10 friends -- maybe two when he’s paying—so if you’re into seriously good food with friends, roll your entry in.
Here come da judge: Tarrant County Judge B. Glen Whitley, who really is an accounting guy (Whitley Penn), not a legal beagle, is back to update Chamber members during the annual State of the County luncheon Sept. 26 . If the county gets any bigger, it’s going to be the state. Judge Whitley will review property tax changes from the 2019 legislative session, and the new county budget, voting machines and voting centers. He will have updates on the Tarrant County Hospital District bond proposition passed in 2018. The Chamber also will present the 9th annual Vandergriff Award to the Texas Rangers Baseball Club . Vandergriff was a Mayor of Arlington, County Judge and delivered the Rangers to Arlington for the 1972 season. Come judge for yourself with a seat from Boss Miserly Mistress.

Break a leg: AMON! The Ultimate Texan is playwright / and former east coaster Dave Lieber’s love story to Fort Worth and Texas. Lieber’s been in north Texas 20+ years and knows more Texas than Texans. It only takes seconds to start laughing and minutes to start lovin’ AMON! The Ultimate Texan . Dave and actor Kevin Dilks have a hit. They started with 17 sold out shows in Hurst and the Fort Worth Business Press is presenting six shows Sept. 20-28 at the Scott Theater. Rich Connor, owner of the Business Press, was publisher of the Star-Telegram (as was AMON!) when Lieber slipped through all HR protocols to get hired as a columnist. Rich will be front and center Sept. 20 and sent over two tickets to join him.
Book smart: Did you know the Chamber had a “store”? You can shop at https://business.fortworthchamber.com/store/ . Mr. B wanted to suggest that the Chamber sell a B bobblehead and was checking the price range of other things available. Unfortunately, the TX Whiskey in the prize closet isn’t on the For Sale list. What is there, and very valuable for your sales and events peeps, are the 2019 Fort Worth Business Press Book of Lists and the comprehensive Event Venue Directory. Looking for sales? The Lists include the top companies and their contacts in more than 60 industries. Have an event? The Venue guide is an alphabetized spreadsheet of sites suitable for a variety of events. Take your pick.
Congratulations to the August 21st

Dog-gone it: Cara Kennemer, a Shareholder practicing Construction and Collections with Underwood Law Firm , was presenting to steel fabricators on collections. “In Texas, unfortunately, to collect you CAN NOT threaten to garnish someone’s dog, which would be the most effective thing.”
Serious side: Mayor Price Is Right--
  • “You’ve got to be passionate, whether you’re a small business or the Mayor.”
  • “If you don’t learn from failure, you’re not growing.”
  • On leadership: “Listen before you talk. That’s why you have two ears and one mouth.”
  • Why Read Fort Worth is so important. “Education is the biggest ticket to change anyone’s life."
Humorous side: Mayor Price Is Right--
  • Among her workouts, she runs 20-to-25 minutes. “I hate running!”
  • “My $29,000 salary works out to about $1 an hour.”
  • “My short-term goal is always to get more sleep.”
  • When asked what keeps you up at night, she said, “Very little; I’m always tired.”
Holding out in Cabo? The Chamber is starting an Oval Table Series for 30 attendees Sept. 5 and the first guest is perfect to assist in Mr. B’s continuing Don Quixote flailing with Boss Miserly Mistress  for more pay. David Minor, Founder Emeritus, TCU Neeley Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and President of Minor and Associates mergers and acquisition consultants, will lead the discussion on The Art of Negotiation. Maybe Dak, Zeke, Amari and Jerry will attend.
Breakfast of champions: With their almost three-year-old granddaughter, Peyton, out of school for a week, Reagan Ferguson ( Pressman Printing ) and wife, Karen ( TCU ) provided day coverage with “Camp Koko.” When she became a grandma, Karen decided she wanted to be called Koko. So, Reagan, of course, chose Pops.
Hats Off: U.S. Rep. Kay Granger of Fort Worth spoke during a Chamber Leaders in Government luncheon last week and took time to single out Chamber President Bill Thornton, who is retiring next July. “We’ve worked together many years, Bill. You should be very proud of what you’ve done. Thank you very much for all the Chamber does.”
“The only constant is change. You have to constantly adapt to keep growing.”

So long, farewell: Long-time nonprofit executive Roger Partridge is taking his profits and retiring. His last day as Director of Engagements and Gifts at Gladney Center for Adoption is Friday. “T hank you to the many donors I worked with and to my fellow nonprofit professionals,” Roger said. “Thank you for the work that you do to make our community great; it’s been a privilege to work beside you.” Grandkids in Denver, here he comes.
$75K update:  Wowser! The young ladies from V.R. Eaton High School mentioned last week -- Kaylin Yudice, Madyson Hooley, Logan Kelley and Rachel Bailey -- won the FedEx entrepreneur competition last week and $75k for Junior Achievement of the Chisholm Trail. They presented “Our Story,” a journal that helps teenagers chronicle their thoughts, dreams, fears and concerns. “Our Story” donates a percentage of sales to a local suicide prevention foundation.

At least he didn’t forget: No card or gift possible at his pay level, but it is a huge dose of happy Mr. B-day wishes being sent today to daughter Mis B ehavin.
