September Reading Challenge

Book Challenge! Find a book written the year you were born - yup, we can help you with that, so come on in and we'll find the perfect fit. Then read it. What does it tell you about the world into which you were born? Do your parents remember it? Was it a book people were talking about? Okay, NOW, let me tell you that I was born the year Doctor Zhivago was published, and on September 3rd, there will be a new release, a Reese's Book Club pick, no less, based on the truth behind the conspiracy of Doctor Zhivago! The Secrets We Kept is a page turning literary thriller that captures the extrodinary story of three women, the CIA, and the book that had the power to change the world. - Linda
September Staff Picks
g
Pet by Akwaeke Emezi (out 9/10)
"Imagine a world where oppression is a thing of the past. It's been completely irradicated along with racism, sexism, and all of the other monsters in existence. Fighting to save her reality as she has always known it, Jam realizes just how hard it can be to take on a monster in a world where everyone around her  refuses to acknowledge  that they exist." - Elisa

We Are the Weather by Jonathan Safran Foer (out 9/17)
"It's not what we want to hear, but it's what we need to hear. This book explains the perils of climate change while also putting it into a new perspective. Many of us can't believe what actually awaits us and this book explains why that is and how we can change. Foer knows he's at fault too and makes this book relatable for those who struggle with making the necessary lifestyle changes." - Mikayla

Storytime with Mina Javaherbin
Saturday, September 7 at 11 am

Gabby Rivera in conversation with Yesika Salgado
Thursday, September 19 at 6 pm

We are so excited to welcome Gabby Rivera for a reading and signing celebrating the release of her book Juliet Takes a Breath (out Sept. 17), moderated by poet Yesika Salgado (Tesoro, Hermosa)!

Linda and Elisa say of Juliet, "For us, mixed race, queer and straight, this book, this character grabbed us by our angry, feminist selves and defied us to stop reading. This book takes our preconceived notions of culture, feminism, family, language, place and especially food, and allows us, like Juliet, to consider, reconsider, decide and remain open to changing even that because like Juliet, we keep meeting people who defy categorization... and are we really surprised about that?"

Poetry Reading with Michelle Penaloza
Monday, September 23 at 6 pm

Please join us in welcoming poet Michelle Penaloza for a reading and signing of her new collection, Former Possessions of the Spanish Empire, winner of the 2018 Hillary Gravendyk National Prize!

Ambitious and emotionally complex, Penaloza's debut poetry collection explores grief and violence, the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality, and the complications of desire.
