Southbridge CU Joins Southbridge Cops-n-Kids for a Splash!
We've been having tons of fun this summer! Southbridge Credit Union proudly made a $5,000 donation to the Southbridge Cops n Kids program during their Slip n Slide Challenge which was held on Thursday, August 8th at Morris Street Field in Southbridge. Southbridge CU challenged all uniformed police officers, firefighters and emergency responders to take on the challenge. In exchange, SCU would pay $100 for each one of them who took the dive down the slip n slide!
The Southbridge Cops n Kids program does a phenomenal job bringing the youth of our community together and continues to break down barriers between youth and the police force. The program has been in existence over 20 years and we're thrilled to support this program and see it continue to flourish throughout our community.

North Brookfield Savings Bank Warns Older Americans about
The next time you receive a frantic call from someone saying they are your family member or grandchild and they are desperately asking for money, make sure it's actually your grandchild who's calling. The "grandparent scam," is a form of financial abuse that deliberately targets older Americans using impersonation tactics.
To commit this scam, which is also known as a "Family Emergency Scam", fraudsters call claiming to be a family member in serious trouble and in dire need of money immediately. The fraudster might say he's stranded or has been mugged, or needs helps getting out of jail or out of a foreign country. Often times, the caller will cry to disguise their voice while begging and pleading for the money to be wired. The fraudster could call in the middle of the night to add to the urgency and confusion. The goal of the scam is to take advantage of the victims love for their family member and trick them into wiring money to help their helpless family member or grandchild. Only later the victim finds out that it wasn't actually their grandchild they were helping, it was a criminal.
"The grandparent scam or family emergency scam is one that targets emotions and it is important that we prepare ahead of time on how to handle these types of scams," said Patty Ostrout, Senior Vice President of Retail Banking. "If you receive a suspicious call, it is imperative that before you act on any request made of you that you first verify who you are speaking to. Ask questions, call them back on a familiar number or consult a trusted friend or family member."
North Brookfield Savings Bank offers these tips to help them prevent impersonation fraud:
- Confirm the caller. Fraudsters are using social networking sites to gain the personal information of friends and relatives to carry out their crimes. Verify the caller by calling them back on a known number or consult a trusted family member before acting on any request.
- Don't be afraid to ask questions. Fraudsters want to execute their crimes quickly. The more questions you ask the more inclined they will be to ditch the scam, especially if they suspect you're on to them.
- Never give personal information to anyone over the phone unless you initiated the call and the other party is trusted.
- Never rush into a financial decision and trust your instincts. Don't be fooled - if something doesn't feel right, it may not be right. Feel free to say no and get more information before you send money to someone.
"It is important that as a local community bank that we do our part to educate our communities about potential risks they may face when it comes to fraud," said Patty Ostrout, Senior Vice President of Retail Banking. "To help prevent elder financial abuse, family and community members can also assist by discussing these topics with our older neighbors and helping them to report any suspicious activity."
If you feel you are a victim of a scam or identity theft, it is important to act fast! Contact the financial institutions or credit card companies where you feel your information has been compromised, file a report with the Federal Trade Commission, file a report with your local police department, and contact one of the 3 major credit bureaus to report what has happened and to add a fraud alert to your credit reports. It may be wise to also contact the IRS, Social Security Administration and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services to follow up. Always keep notes of who you contacted and when.
We're Always Here to Help. Visit the NBSB Blog for more helpful financial tips, alerts, community announcements and more at northbrookfieldsavingsbank.com/blog/.

Harrington Now Offers 3-D Mammography at its Three Main Locations
Harrington has announced it can now offer 3-D mammograms at its main locations in Charlton, Southbridge and Webster.
The healthcare system previously announced the arrival of 3-D mammography at its Southbridge campus in 2017. Now, patients can receive the benefit of the advanced mammography detection screening tool at 10 N. Main Street, Charlton and 340 Thompson Road, Webster, as well. In total, four 3-D units have been installed and replace the previous conventional 2-D machines.
3-D Mammography uses advanced breast tomosynthesis technology, clinically proven to significantly improve the detection of breast cancers, while simultaneously reducing the need to return for additional testing.
In conventional 2-D mammography, overlapping dense breast tissue is the leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. A 3-D exam includes a three-dimensional method of imaging that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect, Dingui said.
During the tomosynthesis-dimensional portion of the exam, an X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. A computer then converts the images into a stack of thin layers, allowing the radiologist to review the breast tissue one layer at a time. A 3-D exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2-D breast cancer screening exam.
With pain being the number one complaint during mammograms, the new SmartCurve paddle is clinically proven to deliver a more comfortable mammogram compared to standard compression. The curved design of the compression device mirrors the shape of a woman's breast to reduce pinching and applies uniform compression over the entire breast for added comfort.
"Compression is still necessary to reduce radiation exposure, make sure patient holds still and to allow better detail to be seen by the radiologist," said Dr. Baum.
As with all adult imaging studies taken at any of Harrington's locations, mammogram results are read and interpreted by Harvard Medical Faculty trained radiologists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). Harrington has BIDMC radiologists who specialize exclusively in breast imaging.
To schedule your annual exam, call Central Scheduling at (508) 765-3020. If you have questions about your annual mammogram, talk to your primary care physician.

"The Sleepy Hollow Experience" Returns to Old Sturbridge Village
200th anniversary of legendary tale, tickets now on sale to public
The Sleepy Hollow Experience returns to Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) this fall, with shows running Wednesday through Sunday, Sept. 27 through Nov. 3, 2019. The interactive, musical-theatre-style, outdoor experience is the village's most popular fall event, reimagining Washington Irving's legendary tale using the historic village as its haunting backdrop.
In collaboration with Director and Producer Brian Clowdus and cast, performances will be held at the Museum Education buildings, starting in the evenings at 7:30 p.m. with additional shows at 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Visitors will be ghoulishly guided through the village's countryside as they encounter familiar figures like Ichabod Crane, Katrina Van Tassel, Brom Bones, and even the Headless Horseman himself. Performances last approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and include periods of walking and standing.
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the legend of Sleepy Hollow. Guests are invited to celebrate with the show that has been called "one of the country's top five Halloween plays" by American Theatre Magazine and immerse themselves in the spooky tale. Arrive early to dine on soups, stew, and chowder in the transformed Ichabod's Tavern, or purchase sweets and libations prior to the show and during intermission. Overnight accommodations are available after the event at the Old Sturbridge Village Inn and Reeder Family Lodges for guests who want to extend their visit. Promo code "Ichabod19" can be used to save $20 on overnight bookings on show nights.
For guests attending the show, Sleepy Hollow Experience tickets can also be used for 10% off Old Sturbridge Village's Prime Rib Feast on Wednesday and Thursday nights. The feast is open to the public, held in the Oliver Wight Tavern inside the village. Tickets from any show can be used to reserve a seat for any Prime Rib dinner during the months of September through November.
Tickets for The Sleepy Hollow Experience are on sale to the public now at:
www.osv.org/event/sleepy-hollow/
. Ticket pricing varies based on date of attendance and must be purchased in advance for the exact date and showtime. Show dates may be rescheduled due to heavy rain or inclement weather. Often described as a "thrilling" or "haunting" theatrical experience, this show is not recommended for those under the age of 10.

Cornerstone Bank Donates to Stuff the Bus Campaign
Summer is winding down, and students are beginning to prepare for the school year ahead. This can be a financially difficult time for parents having to provide not only new school clothes, but also school supplies. Cornerstone Bank helps students in need by holding its annual "Stuff the Bus" drive to gather backpacks and school supplies for students in the surrounding communities.
From July 31st through August 9th, Cornerstone Bank customers and employees generously donated many back to school items to Planting the Seed Foundation of Worcester and the YMCA of Southbridge. The Planting the Seed Foundation will distribute the donated supplies to needy children in Worcester while the YMCA of Southbridge will donate items to children that they service throughout the Southbridge Public School system. These items will help students succeed during the school year-both academically and socially.
"We are happy to be able to support students throughout our community," stated Cornerstone Bank Chairman and CEO K. Michael Robbins. "Thank you to all of our customers and employees for making this year's Stuff the Bus drive a success."

Help Improve Water Quality in The Last Green Valley
Join The Last Green Valley's Water Quality Monitoring team and become a citizen scientist. Jean Pillo, Water Quality Monitoring Coordinator for TLGV, is hosting a training on Riffle Bioassessment Water Quality Monitoring.
Hundreds of water quality monitoring volunteers work throughout The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor to gauge the health of streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. Their work has resulted in numerous direct actions to improve water quality in the region.
Riffle bioassessments are a way to document good water quality in small streams. Volunteers collect bugs that live part of their lifecycle underwater and act like the "canary in a coal mine," indicating whether the stream meets fish habitat standards.
Pillo will conduct two trainings. Volunteers must attend one of the trainings to be part of the program.
Training will be held 9 a.m. to noon, Sept. 13 at the USDA Service Center, 238 West Town St., Norwich, CT. and 9 a.m. to noon, Sept. 14 at the Connecticut Audubon Society Grassland Bird Conservation Center, 218 Day Rd., Pomfret Center, CT.
All training will be provided free of charge and no experience is necessary. After the initial training, volunteers will be paired up with experienced team leaders and assigned streams to assess. A typical monitoring event takes about 2 -3 hours. Volunteers are encouraged to monitor more than one stream during the September - November program period if they can.
Registration is required. To learn more, or to reserve your spot at the training, email Pillo at
Jean.Pillo@Comcast.net
