November at the Downtown Synagogue
Rabbi Silverman's November Message

Cheshvan is known as the month without holidays, and therefore is sometimes called Mar Cheshvan, or bitter Cheshvan. After the joy and intensity of the holidays in Tishrei, the time between Simchat Torah and Hanukkah seems pretty quiet. But, of course, there is a holiday that still occurs weekly, one that celebrates and honors the importance of quiet and rest.

I encourage you to use this month to start something new for Shabbat and please use IADS as a resource. If you've always wanted to learn to bake challah, especially with kids, join us on November 17. If you like good food (who doesn't?), friends, and uplifting worship, please join us at the synagogue, even if just for part of Friday evening or Saturday morning. If you particularly enjoy music for Kabbalat Shabbat, make sure to come the first Friday of every month. If you haven't heard Torah chanted in awhile, join us on Saturday morning, and if you can't wake-up early, come for Sleep-in Shabbat!  If parking has been an obstacle, we are pleased to offer free parking the first Shabbat of each month.

And I invite you to start one new practice at home--take a nap, turn off your devices (yes, you can do it, even if just for a few hours), read a book, carve out time to be with friends and family. If you need more ideas, please don't hesitate to  reach out to me.

May we all enjoy a restful, renewing Cheshvan, as we turn it from bitter to sweet.
Upcoming Events
All events are at IADS unless otherwise noted. For more information on some of the events below, visit our website.

Wednesday, November 6th, 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Charach Gallery, JCC of Metro Detroit, 6600 W Maple Rd, West Bloomfield Township, MI 48322
Join us as Rabbi Ariana Silverman interviews Marra B. Gad, author of The Color Of Love. The Color of Love is an unforgettable memoir about a mixed-race Jewish woman who, after fifteen years of estrangement from her racist great-aunt, helps bring her home when Alzheimer's strikes. Exploring the idea of yerusha, which means "inheritance" in Yiddish, Gad explores what you inherit from your family-identity, disease, melanin, hate, and, most powerful of all, love.

This event is supported by the Commerce Township Community Library and Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue.

JTot Challah Baking Class
Sunday, November 17th, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue
Back by popular demand, we are excited to announce the return of our annual JTot Challah Baking Class!

Baking challah with your children is a wonderful way to incorporate your Jewish identity into your baking traditions. Join us as Emily Shira Levine, an IADS member who loves to cook in her free time, teaches JTot families how to bake challah. Emily will teach you how to make challah from start to finish, as well as share tips for engaging children in the baking process and making it an activity for families to do together.

This event is open to children of any age, even newborns! We encourage there to be an adult to child ratio of 1:1. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and parents are welcome!

RSVP to Nicole by Tuesday, November 12th.

Thank you to everyone else who volunteers their time and energy to IADS. A lay-led congregation is only as strong as its volunteers.

We apologize for any names left off the list. Please let us know and we will recognize you next month.
Call for Mi Shebeirach

During our Shabbat morning worship, we read the names of people in our community who are in need of healing. As we invoke God's blessing, we also become more aware of the people who could use a little extra care. Please let us know if you would like us to read the name of a loved one.
