District Priorities: Safety and Security
Training for staff, students provides experience how to handle active threat situations.
With the 2019-20 school year underway, Lake Park staff members and students have been engaging in important safety training drills. On
August 20
, a
ll employees participated in an active threat in-service presented jointly by the Roselle Police Department, Itasca Police Department, and members of the District safety team. This valuable, scenario-based training helps prepare staff for decisions they may have to face in an active threat situation.
During
August 26-30
,

tudents have actively engaged in Safety Week and practiced evacuation, lockdown and severe weather drills during classes and lunch periods. Lake Park staff members have been wearing safety orange throughout this week to show support and promote the physical and emotional safety for all of our Lancers.

Follow Your Student's Schedule at Curriculum Night
Meet Lake Park teachers, counselors and other support staff at the upcoming events.
Lake Park faculty and staff invite parents to attend the annual Curriculum Night at
East Campus on
Wednesday, September 4 and at
West Campus on
Wednesday, September 11
. During the evening parents will have the opportunity to follow their student's schedule and learn more about each teacher's learning objectives and expectations. Counselors, the school nurse, and other support staff will be available to meet and answer any questions during your student's study hall or lunch period.
In addition to the use of classroom textbooks, which is included in student registration fees, novels for English classes must be acquired by students at an additional cost. For your convenience in purchasing the required titles for fall semester, Anderson's Book Fair will be held on-campus from Tuesday, September 3 through Friday, September 13. The book fair will also be available in the library during Curriculum Night. During those times, books can be purchased at the school library using cash, credit card, or with a check payable to Lake Park High School (with student ID# in the memo line.) To determine which titles to purchase and the prices of the books at the book fair, refer to the English class listed on your student's schedule, which is available in the Home Access Center (HAC).

41st Annual Joust
Midwest marching band competition returns to West Campus next weekend.
Join the Lake Park High School Marching Band at West Campus on Saturday, September 7 for the 41st Annual Lancer Joust Marching Band Competition.
Lake Park takes great pride in hosting this exceptional music event, a tradition now spanning four decades, which invites high school programs throughout the region to showcase the talents and skills of students.
Featuring 12 outstanding bands from Illinois and the Midwest, the
Joust competition
begins at approximately 1:30 p.m. following the opening ceremony and includes judging in three classes in a Preliminary and Finals competition format. The Lake Park Marching Band will conclude the afternoon performances at approximately 5:00 p.m. with an exhibition performance.

AP Exam Registration and Payment
College Board moves exam registration to a fall deadline.
The College Board is implementing a new Advanced Placement (AP) exam registration process for the 2019-20 school year. Students are required to register for exams via their
My AP accounts on the College Board website.
The deadline for exam registration is October 1, 2019. While this fall exam registration deadline is significantly different than the time frame the College Board has used in the past, the spring exam window remains the same (
May 4-15, 2020).
In the coming days, AP teachers will assist students with their
My AP account and the exam registration process. Meantime, students are encouraged to locate their login credentials for their College Board account as they are needed to manage their
My AP account.
Consistent with last year, payment for AP exams can be made on the Lake Park AP Exam Payment Portal. Additional payment information will be shared via email with students and parents/guardians in September.

Course Level Change Requests
Deadline for first semester level changes is Tuesday, October 1.
Lake Park strives to provide students with challenging academic curricula and instruction in preparation for postsecondary success. Students who excel in their current course level are encouraged to challenge themselves further by pursuing a level change up, while students who may be struggling should take advantage of the many academic interventions offered before requesting a level change down. Students are asked to discuss their rationale for a level change with their teacher, parents, curriculum leader, and counselor prior to completing the
online forms.
Equally as important as academics is the social-emotional well being of our Lancers. If you are concerned about your student's social-emotional well being, and think a level change may help, please reach out to your student's counselor as soon as possible.
With the new school year underway, students should find their schedule to be appropriately challenging. Students were asked to dedicate at least five days to their current courses before requesting a change. Following the blackout period that ended this week, students may submit first semester level changes to their counselor until the deadline of
Tuesday, October 1
.

Graduating classes from the years ending in "9" or "4" (1959, 1964, 1968, 1974, and so on) will be recognized. All alumni, Lake Park staff, retirees and their families are welcome to join in the alumni section. Reservations are not required, but a ticket must be purchased for the football game.
Lake Park looks forward to welcoming back Lancers from the Classes of 1958, 1959 and 1960 during their 60th milestone celebration from September 13-14. The class of 1969 celebrates their 50th reunion on September 14. And also, the class of 1964 will celebrate their 55th reunion from September 27-29.

Pearson Clinical Assessments Data Security Incident
Lake Park among 13,000 school districts impacted by data breach.
Lake Park High School District 108 was recently notified by Pearson Clinical Assessments, AIMSweb 1.0 that limited Lake Park High School student data from 2001-2016 was accessed in a data security incident. Lake Park previously contracted with Pearson Clinical Assessments AIMSweb 1.0 to monitor student academic progress. Although the District no longer uses the AIMSweb 1.0 software, Lake Park is one of 13,000 school districts throughout the country impacted by this data breach.
Pearson notified the District that the data breach involved approximately 676 former students. According to Pearson, the compromised data was limited to student first and last name and, in some instances, the student's date of birth. No academic performance data, student test scores, student identification numbers or other private, identifying student data was accessed as part of the data breach.
Pearson reports that it initiated an investigation of this matter which has involved cyber security experts and local law enforcement. Pearson also notes that it has secured the AIMSweb 1.0 platform to prevent any additional data breaches. Pearson has assured the District that it is currently reviewing its data security measures and systems to determine what it can do to enhance the safety and security measures in place to safeguard all Lake Park student data.
Although Pearson reports that it is confident that the data breach was limited as described above and that there is no evidence that any of the data included in the breach has been misused, it is offering complementary credit monitoring services via a free one year membership in Experian's Identity Works. If you are interested, you must activate a membership for your impacted student by January 31, 2020 by accessing
Experian's website
and entering the activation code 4GCYX5C69. If you have questions about this process, you may contact Experian's service team at (866) 883-3309. You will be asked to provide the customer service representative with an engagement number which is DB12467.
Lake Park High School is committed to maintaining student data and confidentiality at the highest levels. When the District contracts with private contractors, such as Pearson Clinical Assessment, all contacts are carefully reviewed to ensure that systems are in place and appropriate assurances are provided to protect the safety and security of student information and data. Insurance Options
Lake Park High School District 108 offers all families the option to purchase non-school related accident coverage as well as dental accident coverage. Any enrolled student is eligible for coverage plans that are offered by Special Markets Insurance Consultants, Inc. To research the available coverage plans - including costs, benefits, exclusions and any reductions or limitation -
view the student accident enrollment application and
instructions. Parents or guardians of students are responsible for enrollment and premium payment.

IPM
Lake Park High School District 108 has adopted an Integrated Pest Management program that minimizes the use of pesticides in school buildings and on school grounds. The policy, in accordance with state laws, also includes a registry whereby residents can be notified in writing two days before any pesticides are used in the school buildings or on school grounds.
