Hurricane Dorian Update #2

The Village of BHI just sent out an important update on the status of Hurricane Dorian and the Village's preparations during the next few days. If you have rented your home outside of a rental agency, please forward the information to visitors as appropriate.

From the Village's Public Information Officer-

Dear Residents, Property Owners and Friends:

The following message includes an update on Hurricane Dorian and important information regarding Village preparations, possible evacuation plans, and transportation.

Hurricane Dorian's predicted track continues to move more north and east skirting closer to the coast. Village Staff participated in a conference call with Brunswick County Emergency Services and Mark Willis with National Weather Service this afternoon at 1:00 p.m.  Mr. Willis indicated that the storm is still predicted to arrive in this area in the middle of the week and that weakening should occur.  He said that the track is still very uncertain and a wobble to the west or east will change the impacts.  He indicated this area should still expect strong winds, storm surge, and heavy rains from this storm.  The latest NWS advisories can be found here and NWS Wilmington, NC briefings can be found here.

Brunswick County will be opening its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday and is ramping up its preparation efforts.  The County will be monitoring the weather reports prior to Tuesday as they become more defined and may issue a State of Emergency and voluntary evacuation orders for the unincorporated coastal low-lying areas and mobile homes on Tuesday.  Note that the "unincorporated" areas of Brunswick County do NOT include the Village of BHI or other municipalities in Brunswick County.  The County will now be urging residents to start their storm preparations immediately. The Village concurs with this, here, here and here are just a few places where BHI residents can find information for pre-storm preparations.

The Village is also ramping up its preparations and will have a contingency of Staff on the island tomorrow and will have "all hands on deck" Tuesday. Because of the amount of time needed to evacuate the island via ferry, Village officials will be coordinating today with rental companies and Bald Head Island Transportation, Inc. to determine the timing of the Village's State of Emergency declaration, opening of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and a voluntary evacuation, meaning all daily tourists and weekly vacation renters will be required to leave the island.  This could be issued as early as sometime tomorrow morning or early afternoon, Monday, September 2, 2019.

Island contractors who have inquired about using ICE vehicles on the island tomorrow have had their requests approved by the Village due to the emergency conditions that exist and can get underway with pre-storm preparations.

Bald Head Island Transportation, Inc.'s latest report, from 11:37 a.m. today indicated that ferry service will likely be impacted beginning Wednesday afternoon and probably all day on Thursday.  These are only estimates and it could be earlier or later depending on how safe conditions remain. For the most up-to-date ferry schedule information you can visit their website at here and go to the "General Information" tab then click "Announcements"

The Village will continue to inform you on the progress of this storm until its impacts no longer affect Bald Head Island.

Thank you,

Carin Z. Faulkner
