In today's video, renowned historian Kenneth C. Davis gives a quick history of one of America's favorite holidays.

Buying or Selling A Business?
The Chamber Can Help!
The Chamber takes its role as a supporter of the local business community very seriously and part of that role is to assist in keeping existing businesses open. Often, that means finding a new owner when the existing one is nearing retirement or helping someone who wants to be in business but doesn't know what kind of business would be a good fit for them.
The Chamber and the Ohio Small Business Development Center at Kent State can provide the connection between those who are considering selling their business and those who are interested in becoming business owners. Services are completely confidential with both parties signing a non-disclosure agreement as an important first step. Professional counselors can provide guidance in financing options, legal issues, business formation, property acquisition and more. If you would like to list your existing business for sale, or you are exploring business ownership or you would like details on the listing below, please contact Tricia Maple-Damewood at 740.282.6226 or tmaple@jeffersoncountychamber.com.

August 16, 1999:
Activist Ohio Supreme Court Struck Down Major Tort Reform Bill
Exactly 20 years ago this month, the Ohio Supreme Court issued its ruling in State ex rel. Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers v. Sheward, holding House Bill 350 unconstitutional in its entirety. The lessons of this case cannot afford to be forgotten, lest we allow history to repeat itself.
This was a case of monumental importance, for two different reasons. First, HB 350 was a major piece of critical, pro-business legislation enacted in 1996. It was a tort reform law, carefully and responsibly enacted by the Ohio General Assembly, that gave Ohio businesses protections against frivolous lawsuits and extravagant settlements. Strongly championed by the Ohio Chamber, having it overturned by the Supreme Court was a major blow to much-needed efforts to make Ohio’s civil justice system more balanced and fair.
Second, the decision itself was astounding. It represented a dramatic departure from nearly 200 years of judicial precedent in Ohio, which requires an injured person – not his or her lawyer – to bring a claim before the high court. The same lawyers who opposed HB 350 in the legislature took their personal battle directly to the Supreme Court – and won.

How One Small Regulatory Fix Could Unlock $40 Billion for Growth and Job Creation
Consumers may not realize it, but they are benefitting from the derivative markets every day. How? Derivatives, such as swaps and futures, are financial contracts that derive their value from an underlying asset, and businesses use them to lock in stable prices for consumers on everything from milk, to cars, to heating bills, to interest rates on home mortgages.
Strong regulations that provide transparency to the derivatives markets are crucial. However, one regulatory glitch is locking up $40 billion in cash that could be used by businesses to help provide economic growth and job creation.
The glitch is a requirement for initial margin to be posted on inter-affiliate swaps. Unlike other types of swaps that are traded between two different firms, inter-affiliate swaps are traded between the same company’s affiliated entities. They help companies centrally manage their risk and limit their exposure to third parties.
The Dodd-Frank Act’s Title VII created a framework for regulating the swap markets. Indeed, that prediction has become reality.

Today in History
- August 30, 1983 -
From History.com:
U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Guion S. Bluford becomes the first African American to travel into space when the space shuttle Challenger lifts off on its third mission. It was the first night launch of a space shuttle, and many people stayed up late to watch the spacecraft roar up from Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 2:32 a.m.
The Challenger spent six days in space, during which time Bluford and his four fellow crew members launched a communications satellite for the government of India, made contact with an errant communications satellite, conducted scientific experiments, and tested the shuttle’s robotic arm. Just before dawn on September 5, the shuttle landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California, bringing an end to the most flawless shuttle mission to that date.
Guion Stewart Bluford II was born in Philadelphia in 1942. From an early age, “Guy” was fascinated with flight and decided he wanted to design and build airplanes. In 1964, he graduated from Penn State with a degree in aerospace engineering. Deciding he’d need to know how to fly planes if he wanted to build them, he entered the U.S. Air Force and graduated with his pilot wings in 1965. He was assigned to a fighter squadron in Vietnam, where he flew 144 combat missions. After combat service, he became a flight instructor and in the 1970s went on to receive a master’s degree and doctorate in aerospace engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology.
In 1979, he was accepted into the U.S. astronaut program. He made his first flight in 1983 as a mission specialist on the eighth shuttle mission. He later flew three more shuttle missions, logging a total of 700 hours in orbit. After returning from NASA, he became vice president and general manager of an engineering company in Ohio.
