"In 2017, I was diagnosed with Stage IV Melanoma. I am a survivor. I would not be doing as well as I am today without such a tremendous support network, a fantastic treatment team, medications developed by years of research and my faith in God.
AIM at Melanoma supports current research, organizes symposiums to teach patients and families about Melanoma and treatment, helps to educate the public about prevention methods and early diagnosis for this cancer and supports patients during this difficult time.
Nearly 100,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma this year. That could be your mother, father, sister, brother, daughter, son, your wife, husband, or even you.
The KDB Melanoma 5K Run/Walk raises awareness and money to save lives from melanoma. And we need you. The MOA joins CPAN and others to harness the enthusiasm, tenacity, and commitment so many have voiced to continue fighting to ensure that those injured in auto accidents can receive the care they need to recover. There is a long road ahead to either improve or repeal the recently enacted law, PA 21: the Michigan Auto Insurance Law. The public needs to know just exactly what choices they will be able to make and be aware of the risks they are now exposed to whenever they enter a vehicle.
Join Michigan Brain Injury Providers Council (MBIPC), Concerned Association of Patients and Providers (CAPP), Brain Injury Association of MI (BIAMI), CPAN and thousands of members, organizations, and survivors on September 25, 2019 as we rally in front of Michigan's State Capitol. Doors open at 9:00 AM at the Lansing Center, 10:00 AM check-in with pre-rally activities, 10:30 AM Pep-Rally followed by a march down Michigan Ave. to the Capitol steps at 11:00 AM with a rally and speakers to follow at 11:30 AM. Rally concludes about 12:30 PM.

Graduate Medical Education
DO representation on ACGME board expands in final year of transition to a single GME system
AOA training and certification are fully recognized credentials for those serving as ACGME program directors and faculty and for DOs entering ACGME-accredited fellowships.
Osteopathic representation on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Board of Directors and its review committees continues to expand, its CEO recently told the AOA House of Delegates.
"Osteopathic tradition is now codified in the ACGME, and its principles and practices are woven into the fabric of the organization," said ACGME CEO Thomas Nasca, MD. "We have committed to incorporation of leadership from the osteopathic community, equal in numbers per organization to any other of our member organizations."
ACGME bylaws were amended to include eight AOA and AACOM-nominated members on the
ACGME Board of Directors
in 2020. Currently, 67 DOs serve in ACGME leadership positions. Six DOs serve on its Board of Directors, with two sitting on its executive committee. Among the 67 DOs in leadership, four chair review committees and four serve as vice chairs, Dr. Nasca noted.

The Michigan Osteopathic Association is fortunate to have Strategic Partners like Metro Health who are constantly contributing to the communities they serve.
Metro Health - University of Michigan Health has expanded its outpatient cardiovascular rehabilitation into a 5,000 square-foot space complete with varied exercise equipment, a kitchen with weekly classes on healthy cooking, and staffed with six exercise physiologists, a nurse, and a dietician - all supervised by cardiologist, Dr. Barbara Karenko, and nine additional cardiologists.
As part of a Cardio Rehab effort, Metro Health offers the Pritikin© Intensive Cardiac Rehab. Patients follow individualized exercise regimens and are monitored while on the machines. An exercise program is combined with special classes, including Pritikin© Certified cooking classes in the recently opened instruction kitchen.
The MOA is delighted to share "Happy News," and Metro Health's Cardio Rehab program is making patients happy and healthy!

The MOA will host the 15th Annual Autumn Scientific Convention at the Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids, Nov. 8 - 10, 2019. Network with colleagues, visit the Scientific Research Exhibit Competition and visit with exhibitors during a compelling and educational weekend. This event has seen tremendous growth since its humble beginnings in 2004. Educational CME opportunity to earn 24-26 AOA Category 1-A credits. The MOA has a limited number of rooms reserved with a group rate discount at the Amway Grand Plaza (link is below).

Subject: Enrollment Requirement for Prescribers
Effective: October 1, 2019
Programs Affected: Medicaid, Healthy Michigan Plan, Children's Special Health Care Services (CSHCS), Maternity Outpatient Medical Services (MOMS)
The purpose of this bulletin is to enforce federal Medicaid enrollment requirements that apply to providers who prescribe drugs to Medicaid beneficiaries. These requirements are outlined in Section 6401 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and Section 5005(b)(2) of the 21st Century Cures Act. The purpose of these requirements is to protect Medicaid beneficiaries by strengthening program integrity and care quality.
Effective October 1, 2019, providers who prescribe drugs to Medicaid beneficiaries must be actively enrolled in the Community Health Automated Medicaid Processing System (CHAMPS) - the state's online Medicaid enrollment system. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) will prohibit payment for prescription drug claims written by a prescriber who is not enrolled in CHAMPS.
For Prescribers
Claims for drugs prescribed by a provider who is not enrolled in CHAMPS will be denied. This applies to all providers who prescribe drugs, including medical residents. In order to avoid interruptions in beneficiary drug therapy, prescribers are encouraged to enroll in CHAMPS as soon as possible. Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation sponsors the Unite to Face Addiction Rally at the Michigan State Capitol

|
A Coverys representative had the opportunity to speak on the Capitol steps in Lansing, Michigan to describe Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation's involvement and support for improving outcomes in the battle to save lives from drug addiction.
On the Capitol lawn, community resources including recovery centers, Hope Not Handcuffs, Michigan State University, Sparrow Hospital, and Henry Ford Health Systems networked to connect services and discuss ways to collaborate with each other on the issues surrounding opioid addiction.
The community-focused event also featured other speakers from recovery centers who shared their personal experiences, recovery stories, and solutions. Sheriff Scott Wrigglesworth also spoke about the efforts of law enforcement, not to judge, but try to get people help.

MHA Safety & Quality Symposium | Thursday, Sept. 26
The annual MHA Safety & Quality Symposium brings national experts to MHA members and draws hundreds of attendees each year. This year's symposium will focus on caring for caregivers and current healthcare priorities in Michigan, and its agenda has been condensed to one day to make it easier for clinical teams to attend.
Keynote speaker
Amy C. Edmondson, Novartis professor of leadership and management at the Harvard Business School, will outline the importance of psychological safety in creating a safe environment. Additional speakers include
Eric Alberts, CEM, corporate manager, emergency preparedness, at Orlando Regional Medical Center, and
Dayna Bowen Matthew, JD, PhD, distinguished professor of law, professor of public health sciences, University of Virginia, Charlottesville.
Who Should Attend
This program is designed for healthcare professionals involved in safety and quality, including the leadership team comprising chief executive, medical and nursing officers; the care teams comprising physicians, nurses and allied health professionals; patient safety and quality officers; patient and family advocates; and others involved in initiatives to improve safety and patient and family engagement. Professionals from hospitals, physician practices, community pharmacies, long-term-care and behavioral health facilities are encouraged to attend.
