Dumas Wesley Helped Me...
Roshell Flowers - Owner of Roshell's Cafe and Deli
Roshell’s Café and Deli has been an establishment in the Crichton community since 1952. Roshell Flowers, owner of the Café, has been a long-time supporter of the Dumas Wesley Community Center. "I've had two grandchildren attend the summer program at Dumas Wesley. My six year old grandson, Brayden, had a blast this summer! I loved listening to him talk about his daily adventures," said Flowers. For over a decade, the Flowers family and several employees of the Cafe have participated in Dumas Wesley’s Summer Recreation Program, After School Achievement Program, Transitional Housing Program and Annual Toy Store. "Dumas Wesley has always been a fixture in the Crichton community. The Center has been a lifeline for so many families. To this day, my employees talk about their experience growing up at Dumas. They say, 'H ad it not been for Dumas, I'd be getting into trouble.' I think that's what a lot of children in Crichton would say," said Flowers.
The Smiley Family - After School Achievement Program
Joe Smiley is a single father who, in the absence of Dumas Wesley, would not have after school care for his 10 year-old son, Jaxon. Two years ago, Smiley enrolled his son in Dumas Wesley’s free After School Achievement Program. "Jaxon was struggling in school, especially reading. I wanted to enroll him in an after school program, but I couldn't afford to. I needed help," said Smiley. "Dumas Wesley has been my saving grace. Had it not been for the free after school program, Jaxon would still be struggling. I am so grateful." Since enrolling Jaxon in the program, his grades have improved considerably; Jaxon is a first-time A/B honor roll student and he has recently been accepted into Dunbar Magnet School. "I love coming here after school. My favorite thing is Mad Science Mondays. We get to do cool experiments," said Jaxon. "Volunteers help with my homework and school projects. I love it here!"

Spire Gives Back to Dumas!
On Tuesday, August 27th, Spire employees spent the morning volunteering at Dumas Wesley for Spire's Day of Good. Volunteers played bingo, served lunch to participants in the Senior Activities for Independent Living program and worked outside landscaping the grounds. “Dumas Wesley Community Center has always been a top choice because the people they help and serve are always appreciative and thankful," said Kesshia Davis, Manager, Governmental Affairs, with Spire. "Spire has been partnering with Dumas Wesley for several years; we’re like a family. We volunteer because when we put our energy behind our communities, we all thrive."

Thank you, Spire, for supporting the Center by lending a helping hand. Learn more about volunteer opportunities here .
