J-School Generations is this week
Join us this week for J-School Generations! On Oct 24, alumni will visit classes, participate in the J-School Career Fair, team up with students for games and prizes and attend a KU men's basketball game in the evening. On Oct. 25, the Adobe team will bring an XD Creative Jam to KU, and students will compete virtually against teams from K-State. In addition to networking with our amazing alumni, there will be prizes for students during events on both days. Sign up here.
Montgomery Family Symposium
The annual Montgomery Family Symposium was held in Topeka on Oct. 11 featuring speaker Damian Radcliffe (center), a professor of the practice at the University of Oregon, who showed trends in using technology to increase readership and revenue. John Montgomery (left) announced the Montgomery Fund Innovation Incubator, which will support new, revenue-producing streams for members of the Kansas Press Association, with up to two grants totaling $5,000 for plans that are adaptable to other markets. Steve Wolgast (right), Knight Chair in Audience and Community Engagement for News, gave a presentation looking at audience engagement with the news based on data from this year’s Reuters Institute Digital News Report and from the Medill School of Journalism.
Campus food drive
The annual campus food drive sponsored by Food for Jayhawks is this month. Donations support Just Food, the food pantry in Douglas County, and KU's own food pantry, the Campus Cupboard located in the Kansas Union. Items may be dropped off in various locations across campus, including the Resource Center inside Stauffer-Flint Hall. Learn more here.
Budig Teaching Professorship of Writing nominations accepted now
Nominations for the Budig Teaching Professorship of Writing 2020 are now being accepted. Completed files must be delivered to the dean’s office (200 Stauffer-Flint) by 5 p.m., Nov. 21, 2019. Learn more here.
Research, Publications and Presentations
Professor Chuck Marsh , Associate Professor David Guth and J-School alumna Bonnie Short have signed a contract with Routledge to produce the fifth edition of Strategic Writing: Multimedia Writing for Public Relations, Advertising and More. The textbook is used at more than 100 colleges and universities in the United States, including Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Indiana and University of Texas-Austin.
 
Associate Professor Yvonnes Chen 's lead-author article on health-promoting media literacy is now in press in the Journal of Media Literacy Education. This intervention improves adults’ interpretations of sugar-sweetened beverage advertising. Her co-authors include researchers from the University of Virginia and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Student News and Opportunities
Sophomore Brynna Darley wrote a chapter in a book by Timothy Miller , professor of religious studies at KU. The book, “Crises, Disasters, and Controversies: The Forgotten Other Side of American Religion,” details faith-based catastrophes such as televangelist scandals, the Branch Davidians siege and Jonestown tragedy. On Oct. 4 and 5, doctoral student  Shola Aromona was a Graduate Student Fellow at the 2019 Local News Research Conference hosted by the DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy, Duke University and funded by the Democracy Fund.

JD/Ph.D. student Harrison Rosenthal attended the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) Regional Conference in Chicago, Illinois. Attendees discussed new developments in First Amendment jurisprudence with a special focus on student media. Rosenthal represented the University of Kansas, which FIRE named among the  top ten worst  colleges for free speech in 2019.

Students in the Summer J560: Message Development class taught by GTA Evelyn Burns , recently had two key strategic communication recommendations implemented by the U.S. Army Maneuver Support Battle Lab at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. A group of three students in Burns’ class accepted the Army organization’s challenge to develop a strategic message plan and associated multimedia products for the organization’s Maneuver Support, Sustainment, and Protection Integration Experiment in order to gain participation by tech companies to test their wares with Army soldiers. Renaming the experiment event to EPIX (Enabler Prototyping Integration eXperiments) along with the slogan ‘Challenge your Tech’ are now part of the Battle Lab’s strategic communication strategy the Army organization launched at the Association of the United States Army in Washington, D.C.
Students invited to join PRSSA
Students are invited to join the Public Relations Student Society of America at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, for pizza and a professional speaker. PRSSA is a great opportunity to build connections and learn about potential internships and career options. PRSSA bridges the gap between students and professional careers.
Application for J-School scholarships open now
Each year, students are eligible to apply for School of Journalism scholarships, starting Oct. 1. All students admitted to the school are encouraged to apply. Students who receive KU renewable scholarships should note that the School of Journalism will likely be funding those scholarships during their junior and senior years. Students receiving renewable scholarships should still apply for journalism scholarships; additional funds may be available. Applications are due Dec. 1, and scholarship recipients will be notified in April 2020. Scholarships are for the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 academic year.  Apply here  (click the red Sign In button at the top, then log in with your KU online ID and password). Apply now for the Pulliam Journalism Fellowship
The 2020 Pulliam Journalism Fellowship Program welcomes applications now for next year's program. Twenty winners nationwide will be selected for a 10-week internship from June 8 through Aug. 14, 2020, in Indianapolis and Phoenix. Learn more and apply here.

Carnegie-Knight News21 program
The nationally acclaimed Carnegie-Knight News21 program is now accepting applications. During the spring semester, students take part in a News21 issues seminar taught by News21 Executive Editor Jacqueline Petchel . During the summer, fellows work full time out of a digital newsroom at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University for 10 weeks, typically beginning in mid- to late May and ending in late July or early August. Fellows receive a $7,500 stipend plus travel expenses. Learn more here.
Congressional Fellowship Program
The American Political Science Association (APSA) Congressional Fellowship Program is currently accepting online applications for APSA-MCI Communications Congressional Fellowships for scholars and journalists with a professional interest in telecommunications. The nine-month program in Washington, D.C., gives scholars and journalists a hands-on understanding of Congress through placements in congressional offices. Learn more here.

Digital Literacy Day at K-State
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas (from left), students Christian Toth and Sheyenne Denton , and Digital Media Specialist Heather Lawrenz represented the J-School at Digital Literacy Day at K-State on Friday. Toth and Denton participated in a student showcase and presented their collected work, speaking about The Agency and how they used Adobe programs in various classes and internships. Belmas presented her work with the Gamification class using XD. Lawrenz presented an assignment idea using Rush as a way to have students introduce themselves in class, showed how Adobe EdEx can be used by educators, and led a hands-on workshop on XD.
Best Practices for Twitter workshop
If you are anxious to communicate with the public through Twitter but don't know how, if you want to up your Twitter game, or
if you want to use Twitter to network with fellow researchers, attend "Best Practices for Twitter" at 3 p.m. Nov. 13 at The Commons. Teams get two hours to solve the problem, using design thinking and user experience principles. Present the project to a jury of industry experts to get a chance for your team to win a $250 Visa Gift Card each (plus bragging rights!) Sign up here.

Join a team: There is still space open on both Teams and Topics. Sign up here. Teams will give you an opportunity to solve multiple client challenges using Adobe software. This a great way to build your skills and your portfolio. Topics is a set of four, three-week tutorial and project-based lunch-and-learn style sessions designed to give you basic skills in Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Premiere.​

J-School Career Fair is this week
The J-School Career Fair for the fall semester is set for Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Adams Alumni Center across from the Kansas Union. The fair, scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m., will be held in conjunction with the annual J-School Generations event. A photo booth will be available for students to have professional LinkedIn photos taken. After the fair, students are welcome to join KU alumni for networking and games at 4:30-6 p.m. at the Alumni Center. Approximately 30 organizations plan to attend, sharing internship and job opportunities, and J-School Generations alumni will be on site for networking and mentoring. Interview for summer internships at Lincoln Journal Star
Alex Lantz , weekend editor at the Lincoln (Nebraska) Journal Star, will be on campus Thursday, Oct. 31, to interview students for summer 2020 internships. Apply here.

Alumni update
Bonita Gooch , 1977 J-School graduate, will receive the University of Kansas Alumni Association’s Black Alumni Network Mike and Joyce Shinn Leaders and Innovators Award on Oct. 25. Gooch is a veteran journalist, community activist and entrepreneur and owns TCV Publishing, which produces several local newspapers, including the Community Voice, the Tanker Times and the Big Voice. Irina Rodriguez, 2000 J-School graduate, has published "My Soviet Youth: A Memoir of Ukrainian Life in the Final Years of Communism." The book is an account of growing up as part of the last generation of Soviet teenagers who tasted the propaganda and political restrictions but also the benefits of the Soviet state.

Nick Couzin , 2018 J-School graduate, has been promoted to sports director at KVRR-FOX in Fargo, North Dakota.
