College of Nursing faculty collaborated with Port Tampa Bay to produce a webinar on establishing Safe Working Practices during the Pandemic.

Susan Perry served as the keynote speaker. Faculty answered questions about the virus and discussed best practices for staying safe in a COVID-19 recovery environment.
USF College of Nursing students received hands-on training in the simulation lab thanks to a high-fidelity manikin.

Incorporating the latest in computer technology, this pediatric manikin was programmed to provide real-life patient learning scenarios, giving USF nursing students new ways to sharpen their clinical assessment skills.
Several College of Nursing faculty members have been invited to present at the 2021 virtual Sunshine State Teaching and Learning Conference in January.

Congratulations to College of Nursing V-CARE student Kimberly Hoefer for winning an Honor-A-Bull Award in the Health Sciences category.

Student veterans were evaluated based on several criteria, including academics and the relationship between military service and student success.

The 5th Annual Honor-A-Bull Ceremony will be held virtually at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 10.
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) released its 2020 Year in Review video, which celebrates academic nursing and highlights the COVID-19 pandemic response from its member schools.

The video also celebrated the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife and commended its member schools for their tireless commitment to nursing education. Look for our Bull nurses around the 5:30 mark.
The USF Health 3rd Annual IPE Day will focus on the importance of working interprofessionally to address the COVID-19 global health crisis and how we can be better prepared for future pandemics.

The virtual event is set for 9 a.m. - noon on Nov. 18. Featured speakers will discuss the globalization of infectious diseases and a panel of experts will discuss the role of systemic racism within a global pandemic.
College of Nursing Associate Professor José Parés-Avila is being honored by his alma mater on Nov. 6.

Parés-Avila will receive the University of Washington School of Nursing's Distinguished Alumni Award. The award recognizes alumni whose nursing career exemplifies excellence in clinical practice and leadership.
Natasha Zurcher was recruited to speak on the importance of Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace at the annual corporate meeting for Front Burner Brands, Inc.

In her 30-minute presentation, Zurcher discussed ways franchise owners could build a culture of inclusion among employees within their portfolio of restaurants.
The CVS Health Foundation awarded the College of Nursing $3,000 under its 2020-2021 Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Scholarship Program.

Christina Bricker, FNP Concentration Director, applied for the award, which will provide three $1,000 grants to students who are volunteering with organizations that are supporting underserved populations.
In its latest episode of the TeamPeds Talks podcast, the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners talked with College of Nursing experts on "Caring For Children in Military Families."

Alicia Gil Rossiter, Cathy Hernandez and Konnie Mackie spoke with NAPNAP president Jessica Peck about child health equity and military children.
A new study focused on nurses found that sleeping an extra 30 minutes each night can be the key to improving mindfulness, which in turn, reduces sleepiness during the day.

The study, led by researchers at USF's School of Aging Studies, followed 61 nurses for two weeks and examined multiple dimensions of sleep health and its impact on daily mindfulness.
The USF Health Fall Nutrition Drive needs donations and there is still time to help.

Organizers are seeking nonperishable canned food or boxed items. Donations can be dropped off in the WELL Lobby and will be given to the USF Feed-A-Bull Food Pantry.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Yolanda Torres, who was appointed as faculty representative to the Status of Latinos Committee.

This USF Presidential Advisory Committee works on matters affecting Latino faculty, staff, and students as well as USF's relationship with the Latino community. Torres' appointment is for three years, ending with the 2021-2022 school year.
USF College of Nursing Professor Barbara A. Redding is stepping down as the Concentration Director of Nursing Education in Graduate Programs beginning in January.

She will continue to be a member of the nursing faculty. As concentration director, she was known for her student-centric approach and strong voice for nursing education.
The College of Nursing's Inaugural DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty Ceremony is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Dec. 4.

The virtual ceremony will honor nurse faculty nominees who have shown extraordinary teaching skills, leadership, and a commitment to instilling strong patient care and compassion to our students. One DAISY Award honoree will be announced.
Movember kicks off with a virtual event focused on men's health and featuring Troy Howell, MD, the Suicide Prevention Coordinator and REACH VET Coordinator at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital.

The event, scheduled 4:30-5:30 p.m. Nov. 4, is organized by the American Assembly for Men in Nursing of Tampa Bay at USF.

College of Nursing faculty and students have partnered with Mort Elementary School to offer a series of health education videos for a virtual health fair.

Led by Ivonne Hernandez, the bilingual video project will cover seven important topics, including nutritional education, hygiene education, COVID-19, losing weight, mental health, and controlling diabetes.
The College of Nursing's Hsiao-Lan Wang was selected as one of 19 USF researchers receiving the 2020 Outstanding Research Achievement Award.

Wang’s research works to improve cancer symptom management through promoting physical activity that can be translated into clinical practice. Each winner will receive $2,000 with the award. Congrats!
USF Bull Nurse alumna Brenda Junco talked to FOX 13 about her decades of service to patients at Tampa General Hospital.

Junco spent 26 years working in the dialysis unit before becoming a nurse practitioner in the psychiatric unit. She earned a master's degree in psychiatric mental health and in nursing education from the University of South Florida.
This year's Leaders in Care campaign will benefit a new project aimed at improving the health of maritime workers and seafarers.

"Port of Tampa: Supporting Healthy Infection Prevention Practices (SHIPP)" will have USF College of Nursing students provide hands-on clinical training in infection control practices to improve the health of employees.
Virtual FNINR NightinGala Celebrates Significant Strides in Nursing Science
USF College of Nursing faculty gathered online on Oct. 28 to celebrate the impact of nursing science at the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR) Virtual NightinGala.

Congrats to Ponrathi Athilingam, who was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing's 2020 Class of Fellows during the academy's virtual policy conference, "In Crisis and Calm: Leading with Purpose."
Alumni Spotlight: Abby Jackson, BS '17
In March, Abby's medical ICU unit at Tampa General Hospital was transformed into the COVID ICU. She took part in countless nursing innovations to safely care for patients.

"I saw some of the sickest patients I've ever seen. I learned about paralytic therapy and proning, and quickly learned how to manage the very strange presentation of this virus. I still regularly think back to my days at USF and how much I learned in nursing school there. I wouldn’t be the nurse I am today if I weren’t a USF bull nurse!"
College of Nursing Highlighted PhD Program in October
The USF College of Nursing celebrated its PhD program during the inaugural PhD Week in October. Throughout the week, about 50 guests attended events and workshops where they met current students, faculty, and staff. They learned more about the program and the application process. In these Nursing Science Without Limits videos, students discuss their experiences in the PhD program.
