10-8-19 Meeting

Past President Liz Ross called the meeting to order (thanks for filling in Liz). Total attendance: 15, members 13 and 2 guests, speaker Sarah Kuehner and Bob Adamski brought Ernie Canut.   50/50-Linda Petrik had the winning ticket today. We are collecting candy for trunk or treat at the end of the month.  Bring in a bag to a meeting by October 29th. Publix has BOGO on candy. 

Ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening of The Movement Room at Heights Elementary School is October 16th at 8:30am.  If you are on the RSVP list don't forget your photo ID to check in.  This room is going to be named in memory of former member, Diane Connell. Her parents and sister will be attending. 

5th Tuesday Social- The next date is October 29th. We're doing a service social at United Way, 5:30pm-7:30pm. We'll be  having pizza and making some fleece blankets for Children's Network of SWFL. Sign up at a meeting or send Lindsey an email.

Oasis Reading/Mentoring (Stewart Ross) weekly at Orangewood  Elementary on Wednesdays  9:30am-10:10am. Please let Stewart know if you can help. Four volunteers are needed each week. Come make a difference! We only have 2 readers for Wednesday October 16th, two more are appreciated. 


Kiwanis One Day  is October 26th-We'll be putting labels in the Atlas books at United Way back building. Barbara Hartman will be leading the project. As you can see from the photos the books have arrived! The kids are excited!

Start time is 10:00am. Consider participating in one of the four Hands-Only CPR presentations also at United Way on Saturday. 9am/10am/11am/12pm. Free! 


MS Support Group(Bill Grant), meets 3rd Thursday of each month at St. Hilary Episcopal Church. Please consider attending a meeting and learn about this project so we'll have more 
back up volunteers. 

Literacy Buddy  Calling all "buddies." You will be paired with a child (age 4-5). Three times a year you will get a letter from your child and a few notes from his/her teacher describing the type of book they would like to have. You purchase the book and it goes to your child.   Start by signing up:   https://elcofswfl.org/index.php/elc-literacy-buddy-program/     In the section where it says preferred school write in Metro-McGregor Kiwanis Club. 

November 9th-Rescue Runway. We'll have a booth at an event for Children's Advocacy Center that will be held at Bell Tower. Aktion Club will be selling some of the dog toys they are making and dog treats from the LaBelle Club.

Aktion Club-(Karen Hurst) at LARC. Meets 2nd Tuesday at 8:30am, year-round. They are collecting bottle caps as well. Bring in clean/used T-shirts for Karen to take as they are making more dog toys.

Builder's Club-(Barbara Hartman, Todd Adams, Ada Trapanese) Cypress Lake Middle. Club members participated in their school's Fall Festival on Sept 27, they had a booth at the school's open house and will participate in Trunk or Treat with our club.

                         Today's Presentation: Good Wheels
   
Our speaker today was Sarah Kuehner, Grants and Community Relations Manager. Good Wheels has served the SWFL community for 25+ years as teh state-designated CTC (Community Transportation Coordinator and major transportation provided for the transportation disadvantaged in Lee, Hendry, and Glades. The non-profit side of the organization helps provide special needs transportation (e.g. elderly, physically disabled, to name a few). Vehicles are available for ambulatory passengers as well as those in wheelchairs. They also have private pay services for the general public such as charter buses.
