Summer has flown by and it's hard to believe September is here. Hopefully you have been able to enjoy Central Oregon's beautiful weather, gorgeous scenery and abundant activities. Since outdoors is definitely the place to be, we took advantage with two summer picnics - our annual Shabbat at Shevlin Park was wonderful, drawing more than 75 members and friends, and we recently enjoyed a "pop-up" Shabbat at Pioneer Park. Bringing our own dinners, blankets and chairs, we mixed and mingled, munched and schmoozed while happy youngsters ran around the green grass and rolled down the gentle hills. We had a fun time with great conversations and savored our moments of connection. We are truly grateful for our loving community, for our pristine parks and for Rabbi Johanna's sweet service by the river. With more than 40 members and several guests attending, our evening was delightful.
There is still time to sign up for the CPR course scheduled for Saturday, September 14. It is critical that we have members who know what to do if someone needs help. With proper CPR training, you could be instrumental in saving lives. The cost is $66.00 per person. Contact Mel Seigel if you are interested in attending the class.
With Fall around the corner, we will soon be celebrating the High Holy Days together. Rabbi Johanna is planning our services with our new machzors and Lester Dober is contacting members to participate by reading text in Hebrew or English. Please say "yes" when Lester calls. It is a sacred and special honor to step forward to the bima as a cherished member of our temple. Announcements and reservations for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur go online the first week of September.
Our congregation does an amazing job with social action activities and we are constantly surprised at the number of members who participate on a regular basis to help others in need. We truly live
Tikkun Olam
and have set our sights on adding a new organization to those we support. The Giving Plate provides food to more than 3000 individuals a month and needs volunteers and funding. The late August Havdallah to introduce the Giving Plate has been rescheduled for November 2. It's never too early to mark your calendars.

Divrei Tikvah

Even though the next presidential election does not take place until November, 2020, politics is consuming traditional cable news networks, social media, and public discourse. The conversations taking place are not particularly civil, let alone friendly.
We each have our points of view about what matters should consume the attention of our lawmakers, whether or not we should be concerned about the security of global economies, how to address bigotry big and small, and what to do about climate change here and now. We should each have our own points of view about these matters.
The problem in our public discourse is not having points of view. The problem is that we are rapidly losing the capacity to listen to points of view other than our own. We are taking the bait from forces that thrive off chaos and nihilism. As one outrage trumps the next, we seem to be retreating either into our own team's corners or isolation.
Just this past week I learned about a conversation that took place at one of our events during the past year. Around a table, folks were invited to share something distressing they were experiencing. Someone responded, "Republicans." Many around the table agreed, expressing anger and disappointment. Nobody meant to hurt anybody else's feelings. But...another couple sitting at that table, perceived the message that as Republicans or Conservatives (I don't know as I didn't ask) our congregation is not a comfortable space for them in their efforts to connect with Jewish life and celebration.
The truth is that Jews have been Republicans for decades. Demographic studies suggest 35-40% of American Jews register with the Republican Party. Another truth is that in the last presidential election approximately 75% of voting Jews voted for the Democrat, Green, Independent candidates, or did not vote the top of the ticket.
I, along with many in our congregation, have strong feelings about the current state of our union and 2020's presidential election. It seems to me that it is impossible to keep politics out of our conversations. We care too deeply about the matters we care about.
That being said, I also think that the divisiveness that stems from intolerance of Republicans or Democrats, Democratic Socialist or free market advocates, climate change believers and disbelievers is dangerous to our democracy and our communities small and large.
As we roll into a New Jewish Year, I hope we practice independent thinking around our values and how to improve upon civilization with curiosity and kindness. Let's practice disagreeing respectfully. Let's not suppress others' opinions or concerns about the issues that keep us all up at night, but rather try to understand where they are coming from. It is absolutely AOK to deeply disagree about the way to build a better world. It is not acceptable to discount one another's humanity or intelligence in the process.
The Talmud presents a desirable illustration of how to be in disagreement. In making legal decisions, the authors of the Talmud had to sometimes win an argument and sometimes lose one. Minority opinions are always recorded in the text and often become important decades and centuries later when conditions change. The Talmud records: "These and these are the words of the living God." An argument won or lost is not the end of the story. Living together, sometimes humbly and sometimes proudly, but living together...that is the end of the story. That is what we ought to aspire to manifest in our congregation.

Social Action Update

Big thanks to Bob Pollack once again for organizing Jewish Builders of Bend for a Habitat Build in August, and thanks to our TBT members who participated.
We are looking forward to a huge diaper drive for Mt. Star Family Relief Nurseries to take place at the September 13 Shabbat celebrating Back to School Night. Please purchase either in stores or online diapers sizes 4, 5 or 6 to bring that night or arrange for a pick-up by emailing Lynne Connelley at
[email protected]
. Our goal is at least 2,500 diapers, which Mt. Star uses as it supports families in crisis in our community. This is a critical health need for these families, all of whom have children from newborn to 5 years of age.

Education Report

Another year of Religious School and Hebrew School is right around the corner! Staff is planning, rooms are being set up, and class lists are coming together. We're ready for another fun and meaningful year!
Religious School is available for children grades K-7 and meets twice a month. Our K-2 students are introduced to Judaism, our grade 3-4 students study Jewish values (culminating in a service project!), our grade 5-6 students study Jewish history, and our grade 7 students participate in a pre b'nai mitzvah seminar with Rabbi Johanna Hershenson. This year, we're welcoming some enthusiastic new staff and helpers to our team. They will be assisted by returning teens Jonah Henneberg, Katie Jackman, and Soli Lachman.
Hebrew School is available for children grades 3+. Our youngest students are introduced to Aleph-Bet while students in year two and up learn to write, translate, and speak Hebrew.
New this year, digital registration forms are available on the TBT website. If you have not done so already, please register as soon as possible:
Calendars, emergency forms, and other pertinent documents will be emailed directly to families.
Our Parent Advisory Board will meet close to the start of the school year. In addition to planning special activities, such as our Passover Plate fundraiser and Purim Carnival, the Parent Advisory Board helps guide the future of our school. This year, in addition to other parent-identified goals, they will focus on the continued development of our music component and our curriculum.
